Learning a bit about the recent sales in the area where you are considering a home purchase is extreemly valuable.  During the month of October there were 14 homes that sold within the Valley Central School District.  The selling prices on single family residential houses ranged from $50,000 to $335,000.  The median of the data available shows us that homes are selling for 92% of the listing price at the time of sale.  This tells us that homeowners are listing the houses that are selling at very close to market value.  If you are out there looking at homes this is important for you to know. This is also something you will not learn from the listing agent or the homeowner trying to sell his home on his own. It is important for you as a Real Estate Buyer to determine the value of a proper...

Commuters who use Short Line are of mixed minds about the fare increase that they will face May 3. Barbara Pfeiffer of Monroe: "I'm unhappy. I'm struggling to make ends meet - people are struggling all over - and Short Line's answer to this is to raise fares. What I don't understand is that rising gas prices are no longer a real factor and most companies are freezing salaries at this time, mine included, so why can't Short Line do the same? At least until this depression/recession is under control?" Gary Gomes of Goshen: "Well, like death and taxes, price hikes you can count on. I don't necessarily buy the company's excuses. I can buy into the reasoning of the loss of the state DOT subsidy, but do they really think that this won't drive more people to Monroe and Central Valley? I've giv...

The purpose of this letter is to bring to the attention to those of us who live in Orange County the fact that our part of the County is getting dirty. I am a resident of Oxford Depot and have lived at my current residence for the last 19 years, born in Goshen and grew up in Monroe. So I am not someone who moved into the area with something to complain about. Through the most recent years my wife and I have noticed so much trash along side of all the roads from Monroe to Montgomery. It is so sad to take a nice drive in the country only to look at cans, bottles, magazines and old shopping bags. What is going on? Are we that lazy that we can't put trash in the trash cans? Can't we all be a little more careful and clean up our county? I'm so tired of hearing this "going green" mantra when ...

HARRIMAN - Two teenage Monroe-Woodbury girls remain in intensive care units after sustaining severe burns from flames that were ignited when a friend threw gasoline on a campfire. The friend apparently threw the fuel to make the fire bigger, said Tow Lowe, chief of Harriman Engine Company One. "They made an error in judgment and it was a bad outcome," he said.Lowe could not release the names of the victims or those at the gathering, as they were minors, he said. The group consisted of 6-8 teens, who set the fire in a wooded area on Saturday night at 25 Snoop St. in the village, Lowe said.A woman at the residence told a reporter that the two injured teens were girls, about 14 years old, who went to Monroe-Woodbury. The woman, who was accompanied by an adolescent girl and boy about 14-17 y...

One of the first things I like to do as a new school year begins is to mark up my calendar and scheduler for the days that the children have off from school.  Of course there can be changes during the year but at least it avoids being clueless.  For parents with young children who need to have childcare available on days when school is not in session it is essential to be ready for those oddball days that come up like Superintendents Conference Days or Staff Development Days that don't follow with the standard holiday breaks that your school follows.   For your conveniece I am displaying the school year calendar for the Valley Central School District here.  Take a minute this morning to get all the dates down so you won't be surprised.  (I have even heard of children who might, on occa...
