Our phone rings at 5 am (OUCH!) and it is the bus company to wake us up for our trip to the Grand Canyon.  In a way it is not so bad because it is 8 am New York time.  They want us outside by 6 am so the bus picking us up can leave by 6:15 am.  We shower and get dressed and head downstairs in a fog and light jackets figuring it will be nice and warm over the course of the day (per the weatherman) so we should be fine.  We get outside where it is still dark and it is extremely chilly.  I should have realized then that was the weather for the day.  6:15 came and went and no bus.  We got talking to a great couple that was also waiting in the dawn with us who were from Manchester, England.  They were on vacation in America for only their 2nd time.  It was their first time alone though as th...

November 2010   Market Update The housing market continues its gradual recovery without the aid of the tax credit. Sales are slower but growing. Although it will likely be uneven at times, slow growth is believed to be the trend moving forward. Interest rates hit a new historic low again, a major factor in helping keep mortgage payments incredibly affordable.   Extended periods of record low interest rates and further plans from the Federal Reserve Board to expedite recovery have some concerned about future inflation. One such investment guru, John Paulson, touted the benefits of owning real estate as a hedge against inflation on Forbes.com. "Your debt and interest payments get locked in at record lows, while the price of your home will rise ... If you don't own a home buy one ... if y...

The first thing I will have to apologize for is my pictures.  I left my good camera at home so I didn't have to worry about anything happening to it.  Dropping it, leaving it somewhere, having someone else like it a little too much-you understand.  The ones I do have are not terrible though-I am happy enough with the way they came out considering.        Any whoooo the first day we kind of just wandered around and saw some of the sites because that night we had the Criss Angel show and we had front row CENTER so I was very excited!  We didn't want to do any of the day trips in case we returned late etc.. (and that turned out to be a VERY smart thing) In the lobby was something I found extremely unusual since we don't have them out here.  I thought it was pretty funny.  It was called a B...

I had been away unexpectedly but I am soo glad to be back!!  I was in Nevada for business and pleasure and it is the first time in a few years that I have been able to get away from work.   Nevada is just beautiful and it is the first time I have ever been out west.  The weather was gorgeous and it was a pleasure to leave the winter weather of New York behind.  Going out there was a big step because anyone who knows me, knows I do not like to fly.  Planes and I-not a good mix.  I avoid flying at all costs-hence never having been out west.       We left out of Stewart Air Force Base (International Air Port) in Newburgh, NY and flew first to Detroit, Michigan.  We had seat number 12 on that plane so I thought great! we will be towards the middle of the plane.  Wrong!  I was in the last ro...

This is a photo of Spring – my neighbor’s dog.  This is the only photo I have because she is camera shy.  Not only will she not hold still long enough for a photo but she refuses to look at the camera as well.  She is a beautiful Austrailian Shepherd and her name is Spring because she can jump over a 6 foot fence.  Her jumping ability is just incredible.  There was a time when she was left with a dog boarder while the family was away overnight and she jumped over a 6 foot fence effortlessly and escaped.  She was the only dog in their history to ever have done so.  They have since added more security.      :-)

This year the Newfoundland Club of America celebrates their 25th anniversary of their first draft test which was held March 31, 1985 in Harriman State Park.  The testing this year will be held by the Bear Mountain Newfoundland Club on November 13th and 14th, 2010 at the Verkeerderkill County Park in Pine Bush.  The draft test is a series of exercises which demonstrate the natural abilities of the purebred Newfoundland dogs.  There is a mile long freight haul in which the Newfoundlands will be hauling a cart with 25 pounds of weight through different terrains, and the dog and owner will be doing exercises which will exhibit control and teamwork skills.  Admission is free to all as well as their pets.  HOWEVER, ANY PET THAT MAY BE DISRUPTIVE SHOULD BE LEFT AT HOME.  For more information p...

TrickorTracker is a 2 way tether app that was designed for Parents to keep track of their children on Halloween.  Available only for Android phones this sounds like an app that could be used all year long. Parents can get updates on their children's locations (or spouses!) via GPS.  It requires both users to have the app installed to their phone.  The "child" of the pair has the ability to hit the "Where Am I" button or distress button to call the parent phone. This is the first app of its kind - developed by Iconosys, linking two phones to track each other by location.  Kudos to the creator for such an ingenious app!

I came across this video and was surprised at how little I really knew about Halloween.   I had no idea that Halloween had been around for 3000 years .  I was even more surprised to see that Halloween started with the Celtic people in Ireland and fairies roamed the land (or so they believed) as trick or treaters do today in costume on Halloween.  Interesting video.  Enjoy! Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays.  I love to pick out a new costume each year and have worn a costume almost every year into adulthood.  In the last 15 years or so all of my costumes have come from Marlu Costumes in Port Jervis, NY.  This year was the first year I have been too busy to even think about making time to pick out a costume.  I was a little bummed but the warm weather from this week has helped to cheer me up.  Here is a great video showing a high tech haunted house.  You can't have Halloween without visiting at least one haunted house!  Enjoy!

I have been so crazy busy that the Bon Jovi posting has gotten away from me again!  For those of us here that are the true Bon Jovi fans you will have seen this movie.  When it was on at my house it got a lot of groans from friends and family alike but there can never be too much Bon Jovi in my house.   In regards to the movie I am definitely not a vampire fan.  I don't watch vampire movies although I will admit I did watch the Twilight movies.  I thought they were good which was very unexpected.  This movie for me - not so much but hey with my favorite person in it I was able to struggle through it last year.   No more groaning from the peanut gallery!

As a severe migraine sufferer this is interesting news for me.  My neurologist first asked me to try Botox about 10 years ago.  Of course I refused as there was no way I was putting Botulism in my forehead!  Not only that but at that time it was around $150 per shot and you needed around 6 shots each time from temple to temple and your insurance didn't pay for it and who could afford that?  Then there is also the multiple needle thing...!   By MATTHEW PERRONE, AP Health Writer Matthew Perrone, Ap Health Writer – Fri Oct 15, 6:28 pm ET WASHINGTON – Federal health officials approved the wrinkle-smoothing injection Botox for migraine headaches on Friday, giving drugmaker Allergan clearance to begin marketing its drug to patients with a serious history of the condition. The Food and Drug Ad...

Before today I had never heard of Joel Burns.   Joel Burns is a Fort Worth City Councilman.  I saw the video below after reading Stewart Penn's blog.  In the past week Jason Crouch had spoken out about the same thing and in the same way as Joel Burns and he is to be commended as well. BULLYING.  I think somehow in someway it has touched every single one of us in one way or another over the years.  During your school age years it is to "be expected" because that is what happens at school.  You stand up for yourself, you deal with it and "it goes away."  That method of thinking is no longer acceptable, no longer safe and no longer the answer.  The amount of suicides in the past month due to bullying is just disastrous.  What used to be a kind of "problem" is quickly becoming a major crisi...
