When it comes to sanding and refinishing floors, many customers ask me about "dustless sanding" and "sandless refinishing" and all other combos of these words.  Needless to say, many customers in Westchester (and across the country) have these terms mixed up. It's no wonder given all the latest gimmicks and new companies that keep popping up.    So this is my attempt to set the record straight and explain the terms - dustless sanding vs. sandless refinishing.    Originally posted at: Dustless Sanding vs Sandless Refinishing - What's the difference?    Background: Refinishing hardwood floors - the full sand and refinish Typically, when you refinish the floors, you sand them. You sand them fully which means sanding them 3 times finer and finer grits, and then it looks like raw hardwood ag...

Former clients wish to renovate their home. A great idea, and it will greatly improve their quality of life for them whilst they stay in that home. The contacted me to ask that if they made some changes like raising a now enclosed porch floor (which slopes), extend the home a little,  would they be able to get $450 a square foot the home when they go to sell.... Wow! Loaded statement. I had to first explain that the homes currently selling in their area are being sold at around $320 per square foot, and this is based on not only the property condition but also current market stats. For me to inform them now what their home would sell for when I am not cognizant of the future market stats nor of the level of quality renovaton they would undertake, - would only open me up to all kinds of ...

Drenched in Larchmont NY 10538 - Hurricane Sandy has left her mark   Did your basement flood from the Hurricane Sandy in Larchmont NY? Many low lying areas of Westchester, got hit hard from the Superstorm, including Larchmont, Rye, Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle and Bronxville. We've had a lot of customers calling due to drenched carpets. And, if you don't remove them soon enough, they really start to smell...and if they sit too long they could develop that forbidden word...mold. Yuck!   Sometimes, the water damage is covered by insurance, especially if it was due to an electrical failure. Usually, the insurance will compensate you for replacement value of what you had. We've had many customers in Larchmont who were so disgusted by the smell and ordeal associated with flooded carpe...

Carpet is petroleum based (and as oil prices increase so do carpet prices) vs. hardwood is a natural product - grown and manufactured in the US. And, many homeowners ar...

What is the difference between white oak and red oak hardwood? Oak flooring is the most popular species of hardwood here in Larchmont NY.  Oak is a very practical wood, is readily available (grown and made in the US), very affordable and very easy to stain so you can find the color you prefer.  But many consumers don't realize that there are 2 species of oak - red oak and white oak flooring. If you are installing new hardwood flooring everywhere, either red oak hardwood or white oak hardwood will work, and your choice will probably be dependent on which look/color you prefer as well as the price (the prices of red oak/white oak fluctuate, so in general there is not usually a major price difference, but this can vary slightly at any given time frame or based on the brand/grade/width of h...
