144 Allison Road, Katonah With red siding and bricks offset by white accents, this home makes quite a statement. The entry leads to a living room where wood floors, a fireplace and lots of windows greet. The kitchen boasts wood cabinets, offset by light counters. A family room with paneling and sliders outside provides a great place to relax. Each of the home’s bedrooms is nicely sized, but the master suite steals the show with a private bath. Outside, a large backyard is made appealing thanks to a deck and mature trees.

I've been seeing 2 inter-related trends lately in Westchester County - 1) Kitchens with hardwood flooring and 2) dark hardwood flooring. So, naturally, we are seeing lots of kitchens with dark hardwood flooring. Often, dark hardwood floors are paired with light cabinets, especially white and cream, for a nice contrast. I thought it would be helpful to capture a few pictures of these since I have so many customers asking me about them.       I will be adding more photos of kitchens with dark hardwood flooring soon. Stay tuned.   Also, it seems that white cabinets are the most popular right now. This makes sense as they are bright and look clean. And, they also contrast well with hardwood flooring, regardless of whether you do a dark or light stain.     Below are some of my most popular k...

Kitchen flooring for new homeowners - most popular types Believe it or not, hardwood flooring is now the most popular type of new flooring installed in kitchens for Westchester County NY! In fact, I continue to be amazed by how many new homeowners actively rip up the tile in the kitchen and change it over to hardwood flooring.   In Westchester County, most homeowners that are remodeling their kitchen select either hardwood or tile. The same holds true for when they are simply changing the floors (but leaving the cabinets in place). The choice on hardwood vs. tile is an individual taste one, pending on which benefits are most important, but hardwood represents a larger and growing portion of the flooring.  Why is hardwood flooring so popular for kitchens in Westchester County?   1. Hardw...

Everything you ever wanted to know about Carpet runners. In Katonah NY, carpet runners for the steps have become more and more popular. What are carpet runners? A carpet runner goes on top of your hardwood steps. Unlike wall to wall carpet, carpet runners cover most of the step, but still show the hardwood on either side. They are bound on the sides for a finished look. Why are carpet runners so popular in Katonah NY? Carpet runners serve 2 purposes: 1) they make the stairs safer - they help prevent slipping and 2) they add a decorative element. By having a some sort of carpet on the steps, it adds traction and friction so you are less likely to fall, especially if you are wearing socks in your home. Also, it makes it easier on your feet, knees and back when you are walking up and down ...

I just got a chance to go back and look at my top posts for October.  This is a good way to see what is working/what isn't as well as to provide a bit of extra link juice for the top posts.  Many of these were featured, so that has boosted the short term clicks.  But, they are also versions of what I have posted on my own site that tend to get the most traffice (without the help of features...just plain good content and SEO optimized).  So here goes.   Red oak vs White Oak hardwood. What's the difference? Katonah NY  This is a local version for my #1 post on my Wordpress site.  I customized it for one of my priority towns where I tend to do well.   Ecofriendly Flooring Trends for Westchester NY  Green is in baby.  Here's where you can learn about how to choose great floors that are also...

What is the difference between red oak and white oak hardwood? Oak flooring is the most popular species of hardwood here in Katonah NY.  Oak is a very practical wood, is readily available (grown and made in the US), very affordable and very easy to stain so you can find the color you prefer.  But many consumers don't realize that there are 2 species of oak - red oak and white oak flooring. If you are installing new hardwood flooring everywhere, either red oak hardwood or white oak hardwood will work, and your choice will probably be dependent on which look/color you prefer as well as the price (the prices of red oak/white oak fluctuate, so in general there is not usually a major price difference, but this can vary slightly at any given time frame or based on the brand/grade/width of har...

If you're looking for a light colored hardwood floor, consider maple  flooring for your home in Katonah NY. Maple flooring is a light blond color with low graining. It’s a light, smooth look that can open up any room and give a modern, contemporary and northern European feel.     Maple flooring is harder than oak. On the Janka hardness scale, Maple is a 1450 vs. red oak which is 1290. Maple is lighter than oak flooring and its grain is smoother. While traditionally a light blond color, the shade of maple flooring can differ depending on its age and the area where it was grown. Maple’s appearance also differs based on how the trees are cultivated. Flame maple, quilted maple and bird’s eye maple are 3 different types grain patterns that will give your room 3 different looks.     Maple flo...

Brazilian Cherry Hardwood Flooring is growing in popularity in Katonah NY.  Its brilliant red color and exquisite graining gives is breathtaking.   As the name implies, Brazilian Cherry hardwood grows in Brazil. Due to the climate and growing cycles, Brazilian Cherry is much harder than the typical oak you traditionally see here in the US. On the Janka hardness scale, Red Oak is a 1290 while Brazilian Cherry is 2350 - almost twice as hard.   But, the main reason customers love Brazilian Cherry is its beauty. The redness and depth of color is unparalleled, along with the richness of its smooth graining. Even if you stain oak to be red, you can't get same effect - it's impossible. Take a look.   Brazilian Cherry typically comes in wider planks which is more stylish and makes the space loo...

Wow, August has flown by.  That means it's time to take a look at my top posts for the month of August.   What's the difference between vinyl flooring and laminate flooring?  There seems to be a lot of confusion on these terms.  (Later, I will need to do one on vinyl vs. linoleum flooring - another area of confusion.   I just got 2 leads at Chico's! Sometimes, life can work itself out This was a nice little coincidence.  I already met with one of them and it sounds like a small job now and a larger one for later (and it may turn into a few more).   Trends in Hardwood flooring This highlights what's hot and what's not for hardwood flooring.   Porcelain tile vs Ceramic Tile. What is the difference?  Again, a lot of customers don't know the difference between these.     Top posts for Augus...

In Katonah NY, dark hardwood floors are very stylish. Many of my customers love the dark look...they even ask for Ebony. Dark hardwood is sleek and stylish, and it gives your Katonah home a sophisticated look.   How do you get dark hardwood flooring?   Most dark hardwoods are stained to make them darker. There are many species/types of wood that can achieve this look.     1. The most common dark hardwood flooring is oak that is stained with a dark brown stain such as Ebony (the darkest stain) or a slightly lighter with a Jacobean or Dark Walnut stain. Many customers who are seeking a dark stain want "pure" brown with no hints of red. And, these 3 stains seem to achieve that goal well. The above 2 pictures are ebony.   Even if you have red oak flooring, these dark stains will drown out ...

What are the advantages of Oak Hardwood Floors for your home in Katonah NY? Oak is the most popular species of hardwood flooring here in Katonah NY. If you see hardwood in a home, chances are it's oak. Why is oak hardwood flooring so popular? 1. Oak flooring is very affordable since it's grown in the US and is  abundant. Oak hardwood tends to be less expensive compared to the other species (such as maple, hickory, brazilian cherry, etc). And, in Katonah NY, it's very readily available to get unfinished oak hardwood flooring. Often, unfinished oak flooring (that is refinished and stained on-site) is a bit less expensive than prefinished oak, especially as you go wider in the plank size.     2. Oak flooring is the standard of hardness, and oak tends to hide scratches well. On the Janka ha...

Last week, it was fun catching up with one of my customer's and seeing the amazing progress they made on their home.  I originally met them at a home show maybe about 3 years ago.  At that point in time, we did a custom made area rug for their family room combining two colors of a tone-on-tone carpet (see picture).   I showed them several other more expensive carpets as well...one for the living room and one for the bedroom...but I didn't hear from them again...and figured I never would.     Well lucky me...two years later...and thanks to Active Rain, my customers now had the money to spend on their floors (it seemed that they had a major flood in the basement...and they were able to use the insurance money and redirect it to other portions of the home.  It was 2 yrs later, and they los...
