June 19, 2009 There are a few nice events going on in Silver City this week-end. Sometimes it's just nice to walk around town and check things out. 1. There is the Farmers Market on Saturday morning. Go buy some fresh vegetables and a freshly baked good. While you're there, go across the street and check out the Art Market. 2. Hang out downtown and enjoy the Yankie and Texas Street street dance. Local musician Brandon Perault is playing. He's great! 3. There will be a Vets Motorcycle Run in Fort Bayard that is like a festival. Music, food, etc. It's on Friday and Saturday. 4. This is the week-end that the Gila Cliff Dwellings will have free entry. The Forest Service is trying to get people to come and visit so are offering free week-ends.     Today's Saying: "The only people with whom y...

Mining - Part Two Reclamation After mining operations are over, the mine area must undergo Reclamation. The tailings are contoured to flatten them out, and to further stabilize them.  The Mining Company is required to bring the landscape back to a natural looking landscape and make the area safe - physically, chemically, etc. The Tyrone Mine is now undergoing this process. The entire process may take 5+ years and costs hundreds of million dollars.   Today's Saying: "Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn't music."  ~William Stafford

June 1, 2009 I certainly had one of the nicest week-ends in a long time. Went to the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning where I ran in to 4 people I knew, noticed that the market is ever expanding in product and diversity, and bought a rocking pumpkin and dark chocolate muffin. Then I went out to a friend's house where they showed me their "Hydroponic Green House". They are growing tomatoes, squash and strawberries using the Hydroponic method. Their plants are huge and already producing tomatoes. They use the water drip system to feed the plants 6 times a day - no wonder they're so big and healthy!   Keep in mind, this photograph was taken on May 30, 2009. My plants are only about 12 inches high! In the afternoon, I wrote an offer on a property I showed on Friday evening. (it was just ...

May 28, 2009 Rodeo is a sport that includes a variety of events including: tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronco riding, bareback bronco riding, bull riding and barrel racing. There is also lesser events that include other animals. Our annual rodeo event is called Wild Wild West Pro Rodeo and occurs in the Southwest Horsemen's Association rodeo ground which is located in the east part of town off of Highway 180. It's a great event that is fascinating to watch. These guys are TOUGH!   I have a silly story to tell about my husband and I. When we lived in New Jersey we would sit on the beach and my husband would enjoy watching the bikinis walk by. Fast forward to Silver City, NM and our first rodeo. When I saw those cowboys in their chaps and riding their horses, I l...

May 15, 2009 My good friends, Jim and Margaret Jones are avid horse lovers. They provided me with all the following information to share with all of you. I hope it helps! When my wife and I moved to Silver City from Missouri some 18 years ago, we brought our horses with us. This is great country to ride in; beautiful scenery, fantastic weather, and plenty of folks who understand and enjoy horses, so nothing to worry about....Right? First off, what do you feed them? Alfalfa hay is plentiful and available year round. Grass hay is a little more pricey, but getting more popular and available, and there are always pellets and grains. There is not, I repeat, not plentiful pasture land like we were use to in the Midwest. Even if you have pasture, you will most likely have to supplement with ha...

May 11, 2009 This week-end I was camping in the Mimbres Valley on John Fowler's ranch. It borders the Gila (Hee-la) National Forest and is beautiful with many canyons, trees, cattle and I believe that was an owl that kept me awake Friday night. Here are a few photos of the surroundings.     This photo was taken up on a  ridge on Fowler Ranch in the Mimbres Valley near Silver City, New Mexico. If you look between the mountains, you can see a lot of green growth, These are Cottonwood Trees near the Mimbres River.             Another photo of the Mimbres Valley with the Gila National Forest in the distance.                   Cool, dead tree still standing. Mimbres Valley, Silver City, NM My sincere thanks to Mr. John Fowler who lets us camp on his ranch.                                   M...

Here are a few photos of horses (and mules) in the Silver City area. I hope you enjoy!   These guys are hanging out on Cottage San Rd. I bet they ride on LS Mesa on occasion!                       This white horse, plus a bunch of others are the ones I see most often. They are on Swan St on my way to and from work.                     This is my niece Jackie on Johnie Walker Red - so named because he's a Tennessee Walker. Very well trained.

April 29, 2009 Silver City Public Golf Course There is an 18-hole, par 72 public golf course in the south part of town. It has bent-grass greens and watered blue glass fairways, high desert vistas, natural wetlands and gentle year-round weather at 6,000 feet above sea level. 18 holes with a cart will cost approximately $35. You may choose to pay an annual fee of approximately $600. The course is short at 6500 yards and is kept in good shape with many trees. Ladies Day is on Wednesdays.  April 28, 2009  The Title Commitment comes a few weeks after the property is under contract. The Realtor will order this. The importance of the Title Insurance is that it insures the property buyer against any title-search errors or mistakes and against loss due to disputes over property ownership. Title Insurance can additionally offer protection to the lender under similar circumstances. The Title Commitment shows all the criteria for the property to close. Typical items include 1) the existing mortgage must be paid off, 2) a Deed must be recorded at the court house. Less common items are a Mechanic's Lien that must be paid at closing. This is when the current owner doesn't pay a contractor and the contractor puts a lien on the property. This item must be paid off before the property...

April 27, 2009 The "Tour of the Gila" ("Hee-la") is an annual bike race where bicyclists join in a variety of races. It has been in our area for 23 years and is very popular. This year it is being held April 29-May 3rd. There is a 94.1 mile race, a 77.9 mile race, a 16.5 mile time trial, a closed course through town with a variety of laps, and a 105.7 mile Gila Monster Race. This year there is rumor that Lance Armstrong will be coming. I hear that the "Tour of the Gila" is popular with the athletes because it has similar criteria to the "Tour de France" such as climate, altitude, difficulty, etc. For more information, check out http://www.tourofthegila.com/  Today's Saying: Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.

I walked a beautiful 10 acre parcel the other evening. It had some dams with made man-made ponds. We saw several rock formations, 4 deer and a group of Javalina (wild boar). The pond has a variety of birds and fish. And a nice stand of cat tails (reeds). I thought you night enjoy seeing views of New Mexico that most people are surprised to see here. Namely water, greenery and pine trees!     This photo was taken in April 2009. I can only imagine the locale once it greens up in the next month or so!
