 November 9, 2009 Nice people live in Silver City, NM I feel compelled to write about the people in Silver City. They're nice. I come from New Jersey and I wasn't used to it. But you know what? You get used to it - -fast. I remember when I first moved here I was on line at the grocery store. I was third in line. The clerk at the check-out was talking to the first customer. I was irritated that I was waiting and they were chatting. Then I began to listen. The clerk was asking about the health of the customer's mother. Hoping she was okay and feeling better. I felt like a heel for being impatient. This is the reason we moved here! The people are nice. I took a deep breath and enjoyed the fact. Cowboy Action Shooting: Have you ever heard of Cowboy Action Shooting? Or the Single Action Shooting Society www.sassnet.com ? Well if you want to play cowboy / cowgirl, you'll want to check this sport out. Using 3 different types of guns (2 pistols, 1 shot gun and 1 rifle), you ‘get' the bad guys by following a scenario. You may shoot 10 pistols, 9 rifle and 4 shot gun, being timed and misses counted along the way. The fun begins before hand when you choose an alias, get dressed in 1890's garb and build a gun cart. My husband belongs to the local club, www.gilarangers.com . What a nice, fun bunch of people! They shoot out in the Mimbres on John Fowler's ranch. They have permanent stages set up for variety. November 5, 2009   The animals of Silver City, NM Today I'd like to talk about animals in our area. I love the fact that every day I get to see deer and horses on my way to or from work. Regularly I see other animals - wild and tame - Jack rabbits, skunks, cattle, chipmunks, javalina, hawks, donkeys, coyote, fox, woodpeckers and snakes. When I'm walking or hiking I like to check out the variety of tracks we see or try to identify the scat. My neighbor gives me a list of birds he has recently seen. Once, when I was south of town, I saw a herd of ibex (a gift by the Shah of Iran back in the ‘70's). If you're in the Fort Bayard Game Preserve you're bound to see a herd of elk off in the distance. While on my 3 day walk to Lordsburg, I saw either a wolf or large coyote (friends helping me id... 11/05/2009

Many people in Silver City volunteer for a wide variety of programs. I am on the Board of Literacy Link - Leamos. We are the local literacy program located in the Silver City Library on Cooper Street. Our many volunteers assist the local community in a large variety of ways. We read to children in pre-school and give them books. We teach English and Spanish. We match learners with teachers for private tutoring needs, and a host of other things. I am very proud to be a part of this highly successful organization. The people involved in running it are of the highest quality. Leamos = "We Read". In February 2010 we are having our annual "Love Your Library" Day. November 3, 2009 Desert Exposure: A few years ago, the Fryxell's (Lisa and David) moved to NM and took over a little monthly newspaper. Their knowledge, writing ability, vivacious personalities and hard work has produced an intriguing newspaper called "Desert Exposure". They cover the usual stuff (restaurants, calendar, etc) but also run very interesting articles from national interest to local flavor. David's editorial is always poignant and relays his sense of fun. Their features are in-depth and well written. When the newest edition comes out, everyone grabs for them and the discussions begin!  October 29, 2009 Chicken Tortilla Soup   4 uncooked boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (If using frozen, thawing is not necessary) 2 15 ounce cans black beans, undrained 2 15 ounce cans Mexican stewed tomatos, or Rotel Tomato's 1 cup salsa (Mild, Medium, Hot, whichever you like) 1 4 ounce can chopped green chilies, undrained 1 14 1/2 ounce can tomato sauce 1 can of southwest corn   Tortilla chips, grated cheese and sour cream (Optional)   Combine all ingredients except chips, cheese, and sour cream in large slow cooker on low for 6-8 hours. Just prior to serving, remove chicken breasts and dice into bite sized pieces. Stir into soup.  Serve with cheese, sour cream and chips for garnish.    Makes 8 servings 10/29/2009

October 14, 2009  -  Wordless Wednesday   (Happy Birthday Lynn!) Sometimes you just need a few beautiful photos to make you feel good.   This is a photograph of Gomez Peak from Lot 140 in Dos Griegos.       This is a view of the Mogollon Mountains west of Silver City taken from the Burro Mountains. I just look at that and say, "Ahhhhh".   There are many doors and gates that have decorative accents around town. It sure does make taking a walk an enjoyable time!           10/14/2009

 October 13, 2009 Here is a list of the current programs available through WILL.   One-Day & Two-day Classes 1) Cooking on All 15 Briquettes: A Dutch oven on embers hovers between biscuit heaven and charred hell Dutch oven cookery may require some special knowledge, but most cowboy cooks swear that a perfectly prepared Dutch oven creation gives a cook far more satisfaction than a microwave wonder. Although Rawlings and Mickey Lemon are amateur Dutch oven cooks, they have entered cowboy cook- offs, like the famous local contest in Glenwood, just for fun. The Lemons will review what to look for in a Dutch oven, how to temper it and clean it when you've bought one, and basic concepts about fire building and maintenance. October 6, 2009 I went to the Grant County Fair the other day and enjoyed seeing the kids with the animals. Here are a few pictures of the event.      A lamb gets sheared and ready for competition.     This fluffy guy is an Angora rabbit that the girl raised.
