New Mexico Magazine's 25 Reasons to Love Las Cruces Today, I came across a wonderful article that was published in New Mexico magazine. This is their take on the top 25 reasons to love Las Cruces, NM. This well-crafted article by Pamela Porter is an interesting look inside the "city of the crosses" and offers a unique insight into the local flavor here.  Having been born here and living in the area most of my adult life, I agree with all of her choices and although I would have selected different options here and there, I think the list paints an accurate picture of Las Cruces. Unlike recent depictions of life in New Mexico, like Anthony Bourdain's television program, Parts Unknown: New Mexico, which I thought got it (New Mexico) ALL WRONG, New Mexico magazine, as it often does, gets it...

Something Stinks in this Septic Estimate I helped my Buyers find the perfect home but like many older homes in the Las Cruces area this one is on a septic system. Yesterday I spent the better part of the afternoon calling two different septic companies with whom the seller requested estimates on work that needed to be done on their old septic system in order to close. Septic systems are pretty common in this particular area of Las Cruces and I knew there would likely be some work that would need to be completed in order to pass inspection. However, I had no idea what was to come next. A Tale of Two Estimates The sellers Broker obtained two estimates from qualified septic companies. Great! Good practice. The sellers deserves to find the best price as these septic system replacements can ...

A Day at the Las Cruces Farmers Market I really can not think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning than grabbing a few canvas shopping bags and head to downtown Las Cruces for the Farmers Market. There are so many things to see, hear, and of course taste there. Fresh, organic food Our mission was to find fresh produce for dinner and if we found a chocolate covered strawberry and a brewed iced latte, so be it. (Hey, at least we passed up the Belgian waffle wagon) The Las Cruces Farmers Market is much more than a bunch of vendors selling their products, it is a gathering of a community on a sunny Saturday morning in southern New Mexico. You're going to find it here  Folks come downtown every Wednesday and Saturday morning for much of the same reasons I did - meet friends and catch ...

Do-It-Yourself Roof Repair in Las Cruces NM It's monsoon season here in the desert southwest and this year has been a particularly wet one balancing what was an extremely dry 2013.  My house, like many others in the area, experienced a leak with our recent heavy rain showers.  But instead of calling a roofer, who I knew would be so backed up with hundreds of leaking roof issues in Las Cruces and knowing full well it could be days or even weeks before anyone could come take a look, I took matters into my own hands. You can too! Here's what you need to repair a leaking roof:   Rubberized Wet Patch Roof Leak Repair Yellow repair fabric Roofing trowel or putty knife Broom or hard bristled brush You can repair the roof of your Las Cruces home yourself. Simply follow instructions on label and...

There are plenty of ways to improve the value of your home whether you want to sell up or just invest some money into the place that you live. Of course building an extension is one strategy, but that isn't exactly practical or affordable for the majority of people. So here are 5 alternatives which won't cost quite as much and can quickly add a little bit of value whilst at the same time making your home a little bit nicer to live in. Redecorate This is one of the simplest ways to quickly reinvigorate your home if it is looking a little bit shabby. You are never going to make a fortune just by painting a few walls of course, but if your decor is looking a little shabby, a fresh lick of paint can make your house a whole lot more salable and it will certainly pay for itself in terms of...

What's Your Preference, Red or Green Chile? Red or Green? That is a question that is commonly asked here in Las Cruces, N.M. In fact, it is our official State Question (no, really) and is probably being asked by someone right at this very moment. What's the difference? The obvious distinction is that one is green and one is red. Red chiles really started out as green and have simply turned red through the ripening and drying process. Once these chiles have dried they can be processed into what is known as red chile.  What did Las Crucen's choose? I posted this question on my FaceBook page and the results were not at all surprising to me. "Green" was the overwhelming favorite with "Xmas", "mmmm" and "can't decide" all coming in a close second. (when you say Xmas it means you're greedy, l...

The foreclosure market in Las Cruces has been relatively dormant until recent years and this has caused many people to be skeptical of it. From low-income to million-dollar properties, you will see the full spectrum of homes entering into the foreclosure process. Economic forces such as rising interest rates and decreasing home values affect homeowners from all types of neighborhoods. Fin...
