Now that the temperatures are slowly going up, I keep thinking to myself ‘A dip in the pool sure would feel nice about now!’ and I know from the past that this sort of thinking is only going to start happening more frequently as the temperature keeps rising. I don't have a pool, but many of my friends do. But before the high-temps really start kicking in, one of the first things I advise them to put on their spring cleaning to-do list is to give their pool a quick glance over... If you aren't lucky enough to have a house with a pool, but you are thinking that you might want to move up to a home with a pool, visit my dream home finder and together we'll find the perfect home - complete with a pool or enough space to build one. For those of you that are lucky enough to have a home with a ...

Since Las Cruces and surrounding communities are so rich with American Indian culture, it only makes sense that crafts, dances, and music should kick-off American Indian Week starting on Monday. As part of American Indian Month, NMSU’s American Indian Program makes it a point to really celebrate the traditions and culture of all New Mexico’s American Indian Nations. Cultural events ranging from art exhibits, demonstrations, and dance performances to a Parade of Nations and Miss Native American NMSU Pageant all begin Monday, April 5, and end Saturday, April 10. Two-time Grammy winner, Robert Mirabal, will be performing on April 8 at 6:30 pm in the Corbett Center Auditorium. Mirabal, born at Taos Pueblo, is an artist, musician, and author won Grammy Awards for Best Native American Music A...

Ever wanted to know how to speak Italian, cook Thai food, or how to start your very own four season vegetable garden? Or maybe you have been thinking about ways to relax a little more by indulging in aromatherapy or meditation. Whatever new lifestyle changes you would like to make, Doña Ana Community College offers a variety of classes that might help you fulfill a goal or dream that you have. Over the years I have taken a couple of these classes and have grown to love them for a few reasons—they are inexpensive, they are taught by instructors who truly LOVE their subject, and classes span from a few hours to eight or more weeks. I can learn something that I have always been curious about without having to feel like I have to become an expert in it right away, as the instructors are goo...

Above: Las Cruces High School Jazz One, directed by Mr. Trae Blanco Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to Mr. Trae Blanco, band director at Las Cruces High School, about the state of public schooling in Las Cruces. As a fresh-faced 24 year old, Mr. Blanco almost looks like he could blend into the crowds of high school boys and no one would know the difference, but don’t let his youthfulness fool you; in his second year of teaching, Mr. Blanco has already received the New Mexico Music Educators Association’s New and Emerging Music Educator Award, as well as the LCHS Jazz One Group being featured as the Honors jazz ensemble at this years All-State music convention. In my profession, I encounter a lot of people facing relocation (either to Las Cruces or going away from it), and I k...

To keep you informed about the Las Cruces Real Estate market, we are providing you with informative articles and information that our team thinks will be of interest to you. If you have any questions, feel free to call or email us. 10 Cities for Real Estate Steals By Luke Mullins The real estate crisis has gutted house prices, tipped millions into foreclosure, and rattled the global economy to its core. But for many would-be home buyers, the historic boom and bust have been a blessing in disguise. During the first half of the previous decade, easy credit and speculative excitement worked to make houses increasingly expensive. By the fourth quarter of 2005, median home prices had reached 2.77 times median household incomes. That is sharply higher than the 1.92 average of the 15 years en...

There’s a lot going on around town this weekend here in Las Cruces, and in our efforts to keep you up-to-date with the latest community news and events, we compiled all the newest, biggest, and latest events into one blog post. First things first, we dutifully researched our ongoing project, The Search for the Perfect Margarita, and headed out to The Game Bar & Grill to try their two most popular adult beverages. The Midori and Pomegranate Margaritas were recommended to us by our server, and of the two, the pomegranate was most certainly the better drink all around. The Midori margarita was so bold that it was nearly sour, and I had a hard time telling whether the crystals on the rim of the glass were sugar, salt, or a combination of both. The combination of the midori liquor, Jose Cue...

Well, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, but this Monday, we went hiking at the Dripping Springs trail just 15 minutes outside of town and I can tell you that this oasis is certainly in the running. There was not a cloud in the sky at 10AM as we cruised down Highway 70, windows down and hair flying. The temperature was a fair 60F, and the direct rays of the sun on my skin gave me the taste of the beautiful spring to come. The birds were singing, the bugs had come out of hiding, and there was no one around us as we ascended the mountain. From the minute you step out of your car, you are surrounded by breath-taking panoramic views of the both mountains and desert; I’m fairly certain that New Mexico is the only state in which you can be standing in mud and see dust blowing in...

If you’re like me, you find it hard to keep up with the trending weeks and informal holidays like National Hawaiian Shirt Day and so on. Sometimes they are so silly and obtuse that all we can do in our busy lives is take a moment to chuckle about it and move on. However, this week brings with it an important message and involves no dressing up. This week is Random Acts of Kindness Week, and we have already started making it a priority in our office and among ourselves. It’s amazing how just a brief second of being kind can change the entire mood and day of a stranger. How many times have you been in a terrible state of mind, ready to just explode, when someone you’ve never met takes an extra moment to pick up the thing you dropped or waits just a minute longer to hold the door open? Fo...

Above: The Cucumber Margarita at De La Vegas. As promised, the Evelyn Bruder Dream Team has been diligently working hard to find the perfect margarita in Las Cruces. The scoop this week is a specialty margarita at De La Vegas Restaurant, the newest addition to locally owned eateries in our city. A higher-end ‘pecan grill’ and bar, De La Vegas blends two of southwest New Mexico’s biggest exports, parlaying it into an entire menu more or less. Pecans and green chile are a-plenty at this Napa Valley-esque restaurant, used in everything from the butter to the pecan-and-bacon-chocolate dinner mints (no, really). After debating between the three margaritas on the menu - the Silver Buck, Cucumber, and Don Deigo De La Vega Margarita - we opted to forgo the the more traditional Silver Buck, whi...

Over the last year, I have written and read a lot about social media. This blog, about the possible upcoming trends and new website to explore, could be very helpful to someone who is unhappy with the layout or user interface of a specific website. Earlier there was this blog, musing over why social media is the best way to market yourself and pondering, what did we do BG (Before Google)? There was this blog in which we linked to a video that explained the how-to’s behind Twitter, and another Twitter post about how we need to reach the right audiences. And of course, there was another blog that exemplified just how important social media is. I realized I have done a lot of “why’s” and not a lot of “how’s,” and absolutely no “what’s.” There are a lot of tools out there that any real est...

The PanAm Center here in Las Cruces is no stranger to big name acts, especially over the last few years. In a short amount of time, the NMSU arena has hosted celebrities like Bill Cosby, The Trans Siberian Orchestra, Kelly Clarkson, and more, and coming up in just a few weeks’ time Las Cruces will be graced by 2010 Best New Artist Grammy-Award winners The Zac Brown Band. This six-man band, fronted by Zac Brown, is a colorful blend of true Southern rock ‘n’ roll mellowed out by a laid-back country attitude, often coming across as straight up bluegrass. It has taken the band some 13 years to find their sound, but in the process they have developed quite a following and fan base which continues to grow by single. “Chicken Fried,” the most famous and acquainted song off their newest album ...

In this blog entry I talked about the cuisine of Las Cruces and how important they are to our community and culture. Of all the wonderful things we have to eat here, red and green chile is certainly the most defining food; we put it in everything, dessert and drinks included. But a few evenings ago, I was skimming through old blogs post, going over things I had written and what had been going on in Las Cruces in the past few months, and the aforementioned post struck me. I had talked about food, even highlighted some restaurants, and completely neglected to mention cultural drinks. Just like with food, the characteristic drinks change with the scenery; Miami is famous for its mojitos, the Napa Valley for its wine, and so on… After my husband and I bounced ideas back and forth, we reali...

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” - Oscar Wilde Someone told me that Oscar Wilde quote when I was in my 20’s, and it never left me. Of all the motivational lines regarding failure and success that I have come across in my life, not one has spoken to me quite like that one. Maybe it’s the fact that no where do you read the word ‘failure,’ which I believe has a negative stigma attached to it, and maybe it’s the fact that this particular line provokes thought. It doesn’t actually say anything about falling short, but instead assumes that none of us want to be a shell. For the most part, we all want to get out and live a little, and we all know that we’re probably going to stumble once or twice along the way. Please take a moment to watch this motiv...

This morning, I woke up to a lovely 1/4″ dusting of snow on the ground, which is always a surprise in Las Cruces. It had gotten unusually cold last night, dipping into the low 30’s, which can sometimes be a nice reminder that it is still winter. So many days the temperature stays at a moderate low 60’s, with not a cloud in the sky; sometimes I think us Las Crucens forget that it’s still winter. Recently, I’ve heard people complaining about our recent bouts of winter, and sometimes I want to remind them that it could always be worse. We could live here: During January, our average temperatures are in the mid to high 50’s, and apparently we’re not supposed to receive more than 2 inches of a snowfall a year. Well, I can certainly say we surpassed that this year, if not by much; there was ...

As I did my weekly peruse of real estate blogs around the nation, I came across one   story that really caught my eye. RealtyInIdaho.com recently asked the question, Where are the safest places to live in the United States? The data they used to generate the results came from Bert Sperling, a database expert with BestPlaces.net, which analyzes things like crime rate, unemployment, terrorism threats, extreme weather conditions, and environmental hazards. Among mid-size cities, which do you think came in at number one? Our great city of Las Cruces. I found it very interesting that Sperling interpreted the word ’safe’ in so many connotations. He wasn’t only talking about the low crime rates and lack of terrorism threats in Las Cruces, but also the sense of personal security with our st...

We have all heard of Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace at this point. Whether you’re a grandparent or a middle school student, someone in your life has started a story with “So, on Facebook this morning…” or something to that effect. Social media sites has revolutionized how we stay in contact with our friends and families and how we reach out to new people; that is undeniable. When MySpace was first launched in 2003, I doubt that it’s creater and now-president Tom Anderson had any idea what kind of a trend he was starting. All of a sudden, we all had places to express ourselves candidly and openly while basking in the glory of the First Amendment. But just as the founders of MySpace learned, being on top doesn’t often last long. The social media trend took a sudden turn around late 2007,...
