Yes, the best golf course in the world, Pine Valley, IS in New Jersey. It is continually judged as the finest course in the world in large part because many would argue that it possesses more world class holes than any other course and the finest eighteen green complexes of any course in the world. Us common folk will probably never get to play, much less live (there are no permanent residents), on this ultra-exclusive course that does not even allow PGA Tournaments.  But, The idea of life on a golf course is a dream to many prospective home-buyers, even if it can't be on Pine Valley.  Through each window, a golf course can create lush picture-perfect views of vast, meticulously maintained lawns. In fact, in many neighborhoods and towns, golf course homes offer the best vistas available...

Barnegat Bay Legend and Olympic Gold Medalist Dies at 97  One would think that winning the Olympic gold medal at the age of 41 should be THE highlight moment in anyone's life, but not for Dr. Britton Chance.  Before and after winning that medal in the 1952 Helsinki Games, he was an extraordinary scientist with international credentials. Chance was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and had a home in Waretown, NJ for decades, from which he sailed Barnegat Bay.  He received a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a second Ph.D. at Cambridge University in 1942 in Biology/Physiology. During World War II, Chance worked for the Radiation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which was working on the development of ra...

Princeton University Gargoyle Tour from Waretown "The Gargoyles of Princeton and Morven House Walking Tour" is a three miles long and is sponsored by the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation, here on The Jersey Shore. The garish, grotesque, and yet grand gargoyles are a humorous addition to the gothic architecture of Princeton University. Enjoy this "walking tour de farce" that will be followed by a more refined look at historic Morven museum and garden.  For centuries scholars have asked why gargoyles inhabit their most solemn churches and institutions. Fantastic explanations have come down from the Middle Ages. Some art historians believe that gargoyles were meant to depict evil spirits over which the Christian church had triumphed. One theory suggests that these devils wer...

A Blue Grass Jamboree....in New Jersey? If you were somehow to find yourself at today's Pine Barrens Jamboree, you would be hard pressed to think you were in NJ.  From the Ol' Time Bluegrass music to traditional food and beverages this feels more like Kentucky or Tennessee, not the most densely populated state in America.  The Pine Barrens is an exquisite ecological system. The vast unbroken forest of pine, oak and cedar is the largest tract of open space on the mid-Atlantic coast.  You can search shady cedar swamps for the rare curly grass fern or hike through a forest of pygmy pine trees no taller than a man.  The pure, slow moving streams are fed by a huge underground aquifer of seventeen trillion gallons which supplies the marshes and bays of South Jersey with some of the cleanest w...
