The mortgage program is more straightforward. Beginning next week, the Fed will start buying $100 billion of debt issued by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the other government-sponsored enterprises. It also plans to buy up to $500 billion of mortgage-backed securities that these firms guarantee. Private asset managers will be hired to manage this portfolio of investments.  By purchasing securities tied to mortgage debt, the Fed hopes to push up the price of the debt, thereby lowering yields. While there are limits to how low short-term interest rates can go, the Fed has shown recently that there are few constraints on how large its own balance sheet can become. Since late August, the value of assets held by the Fed has grown to more than $2 trillion from a little less than $900 billion. The Fed has essentially created cash and used it to fund a multitude of new lending facilities, including a program to buy private commercial paper, one to rescue loans for American International Group and one that pumps dollars into financial institutions overseas through other central banks. NEW YORK, Monday, November 10, 2008 - Students too young to remember the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center seven years ago saw the past and the future from where history continues to be made. Most of the fourth-graders from the Red Bank Charter School gazed in awe at the city below them from the top floor of 7 World Trade Center Monday, from landmark buildings to the pit on one side of the new building, where considerable construction activity was going on. The 52-story building rose from the rubble of the original 7 World Trade Center destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the twin towers.   Just two weeks ago, the entire building was filled with scaffolding and we wondered how the contractors could keep their promise of being ready for the October 30th Grand Reopening.  They did it and they did it on time!   I got the chance to tour the Count Basie Theater on Wednesday evening at a reception the day before the public unveiling of the 8 million dollar renovations.   Almost 300 locals turned out, marveling at the artistry, recounting favorite moments at the Basie, but the focus was the grand theater itself.  We craned our necks to see the skylit dome, which is truly magnificent, then climbed to the balcony to get a closer look at this work of art.  Here's a view from the "Basie Cam" which broadcasted a new photo of the renovations every 15 minutes, day and night through th... 11/02/2008

  July 3rd is just about my favorite day of the year in Red Bank when the town hosts the largest fireworks display in the state of New Jersey.  Here are two videos of the fireworks, courtesy of Q 104.3 radio.  The history of The Count Basie Theater Even though there were already several other theatres in the Borough of Red Bank, New Jersey by 1925 (including the Strand, Palace, Empire and Lyric Theatres), on July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver had announced plans to build a theatre on Monmouth Street.Projected to open eight months later on April 1, 1926, the new theatre would have seating for about 2,000 persons and be equipped for moving pictures, vaudeville and dramatic shows. The ninety foot by one hundred and ten foot theatre would include a wide lobby on Monmouth Street flanked by two storefronts, and a stage entrance for scenery via a ten-foot wide strip of land around the corner on Pearl Street.
