Morris Plains, NJ 26th Annual Memorial Day Parade One of my favorite things about living in Morris Plains, NJ is its hometown feel, sense of community and of course our Memorial Day Parade with a potpourri of shiny classic cars, animals galore (lamas, sheep, dogs, camels and horses), string bands, and festive, colorful floats. The Memorial Day Ceremony starts at Robert’s Garden on the corner of Glenbrook Rd and Mountain Way with the parade immediately following at 9:30 and ends at Route 53 at the VFW Post with food, drinks and entertainment for all to enjoy. Please contact the Parade Chairman, Steve Welsh for more information at 973-644-2746.   My hope is that everyone takes a few moments out of their day to think about the true meaning of Memorial Day, remembering the honorable men and...

Active Rain, a Very Special Place Besides building our companies, getting to the top of page 1 on Google, garnering boatloads of SEO from blogging, I have found Active Rain has some intangible gifts one wouldn’t expect when you first join.  People outside of AR might think it sounds crazy that we have this whole big network of friends who care, really care and are cheering us on during the good times and more importantly, there for us when the chips are down. I have many friends here in the Rain who have been through some really tough times this last year, myself included. Deaths, divorces, illnesses, money struggles, floods, job lose and yet, almost daily we continue to blog. Some of us talk about it in our posts, others say nothing publicly, but we will call, text and email each other...

One of the things I love most about living in Morris County, NJ is the 4 seasons. Nature is always adapting to the new climate and the sun’s position of the earth. Yes, I love those perfect sunny, 70 degrees days with the bluest of skies and not a cloud in sight, but I think I’d get bored of the same weather, colors, temperatures and landscape day after day. Here’s a look back at the last four seasons as we move closer to another winter. For me cooler temperatures signal the beginning of the ski season, snowmobile riding and snow tubing with my family. I think if we all found things we could appreciate about each season, we wouldn’t complain so much, because there is beauty in every season. Bleeding hearts, Robin's nests and Columbine are the first flowers that signal spring has arriv...

Do Stagers Take Their Work Home? This Morris County Stager Does! One of the benefits of being aMorris County Home Stager/redesigner is having a large inventory of accessories: art, decorative pillows, throws, mirrors, candle sticks, floral arrangements and lighting at our disposal. One of the best storage places for some of these items is our own home. My family never knows what our home will look like on any given day because I “Redesign” it every couple of months using my staging inventory. While I love Staging and Redesigning contemporary homes, my own personal style is more traditional. My home was built in 1915 and I have kept it true to that era with an updated feel. My suggestion to anyone selling or designing their own home is to paint and buy furniture in neutral tones. That wa...

Photo Inspiration from an Active Rain Member I spent this past Sunday afternoon at a BNI (Business Networking International) picnic. It was held on a beautiful lake and as soon as I saw it, I thought of my very good friend, Gayle Rich-Boxman. She takes the most beautiful photos of her home town, Fishhawk Lake in Oregon.   She recently posted: Fishhawk Lake a Little Bit of History taking a spectacular photo of the lake with the most incredible reflection off the water. Gayle was the inspiration behind these photos...

Which Voice Are You Listening to? It tells you… you’re not good enough. you’re better than others. you’re not smart enough. you can’t do it. you don’t have it in you to reach your goals. not to listen because you are smarter than the person you’re talking to. lies about yourself every day. ……………………….“It” is your ego It tells you: to be compassionate, think of others. you have it in you to go the distance, and reach your goals. you’re smart enough, but there’s always more to learn. that you are no better or worse than anyone else. to love and accept love and pass it on. to think of others and lend a hand, support a cause. you are not the center of the universe; to bring positive energy to this world. “It” is your spirit – which one are you listening to?

Morris Plains, NJ: Getting Involved in My Community After sending photos I took of our town’s 9/11 Memorial to Morris Plains, NJ Council Woman Suzanne McCluskey, she was so inspired, she asked me If I could put together more photos and collages to use in our Town’s local News Paper and localism advertising. Honored, I happily agreed. I’ve always wanted to become more involved in my community and now I found something that I can contribute: my photography.   I also told Susanne I’d be at our towns 9-11 Memorial Dedication and take many more photos for the town’s use.  Yesterday I attended the 9-11 Memorial Dedication snapping hundreds of photos. I met up with Suzanne after the ceremony and explained about Active Rain and how I did a blog post on the Memorial Sight and it got featured, wh...

9/11 Remembered by Morris Plains, NJ: Let Us Never Forget   Living in North Jersey, we spend a lot of time in NYC going to shows, museums, Central Park, the Empire State Building and had visited the Trade Towers many times. We knew the NYC skyline well as you see in the photos, which was forever changed 10 years ago on that fateful day: September 11, 2001.         That particular morning I was on my way out the door for work, and saw a news bulletin that a plane had crashed into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. Riveted, I sat down at my kitchen table and watched as the entire attack unfolded live before our eyes. Reporters lost their customary professional composure as unthinkable evil descended on our country with a wrath of hatred our country had never seen before. While the news was repo...

Who Doesn’t Like Flowers? I was sitting at my computer tonight trying to come up for a blog post and nothing – it happens. So, I did what I usually do when this happens and went into my photos to see if I could find any inspiration there. As luck would have it, I did – flowers – they always put me in a good mood!

Is Life Passing You By? Mark Twain once said – “I’ve known a lot of troubles in my time – and most of them never happened.” Do you ever think about how much your mind is focused on the future, worrying about some problem that may or may not happen? Over the years I’ve learned a few things – one, even if a problem/hardship/challenge is to befall you, you can’t solve it until it actually happens – if it even does. Which brings me to my next point – usually the thing you anticipate the most doesn’t happen and what you never saw coming does – think about it. Regardless, you can’t be present and only create a vacuum of anxiety if you’re always worrying about what may or may not happen in the future.   You can’t be present if you’re regretting your past or anticipating your future – neither...

Beauty is in the Details When taking photographs, think outside the box. Learn to look at things a little differently and see how the camera sees them and you will find yourself taking interesting and unique photos. Sunsets, mountains, rivers and flowers are some of my favorites, but I also find great photos in the oddest places too. These are all different varieties of cacti and I thought they would make beautiful photos....and they did! Sometimes the beauty is in the small details, not just the bigger picture.... Hope you find inspiration in these photos! And, if you want to learn how to make your photos even better see my last post: Taking a So-So Photo and Making it a great photo!

Taking a so-so Photo and Making it a Great Photo   So you take a photo and download it to your computer only to find it didn’t come out as you had hoped – lighting’s not good, it’s crooked, washed out or it’s too dark, not a lot of vivid colors. We’ve all been there, but there is hope and that is where Picnik comes to the rescue!   Below you will see how I took a bleached out, crooked photo and turned it into a great photo....   1.  Go to Picnik and you will see “upload photo” – you can upload up to 6 at a time - hold the CTRL key and pick your photos.   2. Now you’ll see all six photos – click on the one you want to edit and it automatically brings it into edit mode – see option bar above your photo.   3. If your photo is crooked, click the “Rotate” icon. You will see in my example bel...
