A Hazy Shade of Winter (Speechless Sunday) Actually, it’s a sign of spring here in southern Ocean County, where the NJ Pinelands meet the Jersey Shore.  The NJ Forest Fire Service is conducting controlled burns along Route 539, west of the Parkway in Little Egg Harbor. The NJ Forest Fire Service sets the small fires to clear underbrush which could intensify wildfires.  New Jersey's spring wildfire season starts in March.    The sky was Jersey Shore blue today, but not so on Route 539 in the Pinelands! 02/26/2012

Little Egg Harbor’s Winding Run Development    The history of the Winding Run development in Little Egg Harbor at the Jersey Shore is an interesting one. Kara Homes began construction at the height of the housing market.  At times it seemed like the price point for these homes was increasing monthly.  The sale price for these new homes topped out at almost a half million dollars. The bottom fell out for Kara Homes, a New Jersey based development company in 2006, and they declared bankruptcy.  That was the beginning of the housing market decline in southern Ocean County. The uncompleted homes were finished by another builder.  But many Winding Run buyers, whose homes were not started, lost big. Little Egg Harbor's Osborn Island Bridge Replacement  The aging bridge over Big Creek leading from Little Egg Harbor's Mystic Island to Osborn Island will only be in use for another two years.  The work to replace the bridge is scheduled to begin in spring, 2012. The existing bridge was originally built in 1964, rebuilt in '81 and rehabbed in 1995.  The Ocean County Engineering Department has now determined the bridge has reach the end of its life due to extensive damage to the pilings and heavier traffic to Osborn Island.  This bridge is the only access to Osborn Island. The new bridge will be built to the west of the existing bridge.  It will go up one lane at a time, and the current bridge will be in use until the new Osborn Island bridge is competed in about 15 months. Haven't seen the 1975 film JAWS?  The story is said to take place in a quaint New England town called Amity Island. Replace the name Amity Island with the Jersey Shore, and the events of the movie and book are mirrored in the historical records of the Jersey Shore. In just 12 days, July 1 through July 12, 1916, a shark or sharks killed four people and mauled 7 others along the Jersey Shore. Remedies For An Early Mosquito Season at the Jersey Shore! It was a busy weekend...everyone wanted to see homes for sale in Little Egg Harbor!  Unfortunately, many of those appointments were just before dusk and I forgot, I'm a mosquito magnet! The early heat and humidity have made for an earlier than normal mosquito season at the Jersey Shore.  I gave it no thought until I woke up with the itchy welts!  I grew up in the swamps of north Jersey, so I know my mosquitoes, and they know they love me! The best remedy for mosquito bites is time, but calamine lotion helps! There are some interesting mosquito factoids: They like some people more than others!  Lab studies suggest that 20 percent of people are high attractor types. From now until August, please observe Terrapin Crossing signs along 7 Bridges Road (AKA Great Bay Boulevard) in Tuckerton and Radio Road in Little Egg Harbor. Radio Road, Little Egg Harbor The Diamondback Terrapin is found in salt marshes and tidal creeks feeding on crabs, worms, small fish and insects.  Female diamondback terrapins come up to the roadside in early summer to lay eggs above the high tide line.  'Be Terrapin Aware' slow down on roads around our coastal salt marshes and look out  for the little fellows.  If you discover one in the road, carefully pick it up by its shell and put it out of harms way in the brush on the roadside.  Make sure you move it in the direction it was headed.
