Easter Egg Hunt in Berkely Twp on Saturday at 1:00 PM at Veterans Park. The egg was a symbol of the rebirth of the earth in Pagan celebrations of spring and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the rebirth of man at Easter. The egg symbol was likened to the tomb from which Christ arose. Traditionally the egg hunt is associated with Easter and Easter eggs (Easter egg hunt), but it has also been popular with spring time birthday parties. When the hunt is over, prizes may be given out for various achievements, such as the largest number of eggs collected, for the largest or smallest egg, for the most eggs of a specific color, consolation prizes, booby prizes, etc. Eggs are placed with varying degree of concealment, to accommodate children of varying ages. Mill Creek County Park in Berkely will be the site for the new Ocean County College Sailing Center.  The college will spend $850,000 on the project; the proposal includes a 1,400-square-foot sailing boat house, a 1,456-square-foot boat storage building, and a floating dock that Wilkins said would allow them to roll the boats right into the water for practice, then roll them back into the storage facility afterward - is a great feeling. The OCC sailing club is open to all full time OCC students. NO experience is necessary to join!  Students learn how to sail and then learn how to race.  OCC has an intercollegiate sailing team that sails against the top four-year schools in the nation. The college is committed to providing a first class sailing experience and training ground for our futu...

In an effort to reduce costs, Berkeley Township, Ocean County has assigned a committee to investigate a "modified consolidation" between the local grade school district and the regional high school district. The Berkeley district is made up of four schools, with a student population of about 2,000 in preschool through sixth-grade. Those students move on to the Central Regional School District, which also has about 2,000 students in seventh through 12th grades. Central Regional, based in the Bayville section of Berkeley, has students not only from the township, but also from Island Heights, Ocean Gate, Seaside Heights and Seaside Park. Under consideration is a customized version of consolidation where, for example, should a person with a particular job skill in the Berkeley schools retir...

Hurry   Hurry up and wait. That sums up township officials' take on whether the state Planning Commission and other state agencies will approve Berkeley's multi-faceted redevelopment plan designed to curb residential development and boost commercial ratables. "It's a long saga," Township Planner David G. Roberts said in a recent interview. "If we don't keep pushing, it will never happen. I feel like I've been pushing a car uphill, by myself." The ambitious, four-pronged Town Center plan has been in the works for years. Township Council members signed  a memorandum of understanding with the state Office of Smart Growth in September 2009 that calls for four redevelopment zones and the purchase of transfer development rights for a number of parcels of land. "We think we are basically throu...

Ocean Gate Elementary School was named a 2010 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday.   The small school, which has 156 students in preschool through sixth grade, was one of 10 schools in the state, and the only one in Ocean County, to receive this recognition. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are either high performing or have improved student achievement to high levels, especially among disadvantaged students. The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices.  Each year since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has honored schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, ...

First Retirement Community on The Jersey Shore? Berekely Township was founded in 1873 but it wasn't until an Army officer named Lt. Edward Farrow, began buying up woodland areas in the early 1900's with the idea of building a retirement community for former Army and Navy officers that it saw any growth. He built a railroad station, shops and even a resort hotel called The Pines with the idea of attracting people. But only 11 people ever built houses in what Farrow called "Barnegat Park," and eventually he went bankrupt. In the 1920s Benjamin Sangor purchased the area. The New York and Miami developer imagined a vast and luxurious resort town catering to wealthy urban vacationers. Between 1928 and 1929, about 8,000 lots were sold in what called "Pinewald", a "new-type, residential, recre...
