Barnegat Landmark Restaurant, Sweet Jenny's, Catches Fire. A day after one of the worst blizzards to hit Ocean County, a fire ripped through Sweet Jenny's Peppermint Park on Monday evening, erupting just minutes after the Route 9 restaurant had closed and keeping firefighters from seven departments busy for more than two hours. According to the AC Press, the fire was reported at 5:26 p.m. and the building was "fully engulfed" by 6:01 p.m, Barnegat Township Police Lt. Patrick Shaffery said. No one was inside the business, which closed its doors at 5 p.m., Shaffery said. Sweet Jenny's is a popular restaurant and ice cream "bar" and is housed in a cozy log cabin style building on route 9 in Barnegat.  There is a 2nd Sweet Jenny's in Ship Bottom on Long Beach Island.   Karl Hess, Your Real ...

For buyers and sellers in any type of market, a good home inspection can prevent headaches and save time and money. For buyers, an inspection can find imperfections in a home that some may have never noticed with a naked eye. The seller can then fix certain aspects before a decision to buy is reached. If the house fails to meet standards or has too many problems attached, an inspection may prevent a transaction from even occurring. For sellers, conducting an inspection before putting the house on the market allows them to make the repairs before being stuck in the middle of a negotiation process with a buyer. By fixing what is currently wrong, sellers can be more likely to get the price desired without having to unreasonably waver in price. Although an inspection may seem like another ...

New Homes in Barnegat continuing to be built.  Experts project Ocean County's population will grow at nearly triple the rate of the rest of the state through 2016. A study by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Division of Labor Market and Demographic Research found that the county's population increased from 208,470 in 1970 to an estimated 573,678 in 2009. This 175.2 percent increase in population far exceeded the state's growth rate of 21.5 percent during that same period. The study also projected that Ocean County will continue to grow at a faster rate, at 11 percent, than the state's 4.6 percent in the decade between 2006 and 2016. And by then, the study said, it will be the fifth most populous county in the state. If any substantial future growth does happen i...

Black Sea bass season reopened on Monday, November 1st and will go through December 31st. Many area party-boats, including Carolyn Ann III out of Barnegat, went jigging for striped bass yesterday afternoon with a handful of customers. They caught bass to 23 pounds and large bluefish. The black sea bass is a type of Grouper found more commonly in northern than in southern ranges as it inhabits the entire East Coast. They can sometimes be found in inshore waters like Barnegat Bay and off The Jersey Shore in waters up to a depth of 425 feet. They spend most of their time close to the sea floor and are often congregated around bottom formations such as rocks, man-made reefs, wrecks, jetties, piers, and bridge pilings. Black sea bass are highly sought after by recreational and commercial fis...

Barnegat Bay's ecosystems have been declining for years due to overdevelopment in the Barnegat Bay watershed area which has resulted in ‘over-paving' of land, which causes storm-water runoff from lawns, roadways and parking areas that carries nitrogen and phosphorus into the bay, causing algal blooms that choke oxygen off from native eel-grass and shellfish. Barnegat Bay stretches approximately 30 miles along the coast of Ocean County, between Barnegat Peninsula and the mainland. The Toms River and Forked Rivers are among several rivers that wind through the bay's 660-square-mile watershed on their way to its inner shore. This unique area is rich in marine life. Commercial and recreational fishing, and related recreation and eco-tourism, contribute approximately $3.5 billion annually to...

The entire Barnegat School District plans to go solar in time for the Fall 2011 semester.  Solar panels can be used to supply electricity that runs the entire district, including the heating system.  The goal is to eventually cut the energy bill by 50%. The estimated costs of the project could cost about 8 million dollars though the district would not have to pay for the project as they would enter into an agreement for a third-party, lease-purchase agreement.  The third party would take the energy credits created by solar power and trade them on the stock market. The possible contractor for the project, Spiezle Architectural Group, has worked on 60 school districts in the state on a range of projects including sustainable and renewable energy deployment. This is the same firm that has ...

The Jersey Shore as become quite the TV series mecca;  There's the infamous (to us locals anyway) show of the same name, the new HBO gangster drama, "Boardwalk Empire" brought to you from the same folks that gave us The Sopranos, and now we have Swords: Life on the Line.  The difference is that "Swords" is factual.   Swords enters the high risk world of New England's long line fishermen who risk all to catch an elusive prey - swordfish - in some of the most dangerous waters on the planet. They are uniformly tough and resilient and they need to be as every day could be their last. Most of us have seen at least an episode or two of Deadliest Catch where the Discovery Channel follows a group of crab boats in the Bering Sea; it's the ultimate reality show where fisherman risk life and limb ...
