In our search for some mountain land, we parked our RV in a campground just outside of Boone and in Asheville, we parked our RV in Black Mountain.  In neither office did I find any real estate business cards, flyers, or brochures and yet, when we walked our dogs in the evening, we visited with several campers who were looking for property just like we were.  I thought...what an opportunity agents are missing. It's true you have to be knowledgeable about zoning and other issues but most of these rvers will pay cash.  Our requirements were simple (but not easy).  The road could not be dirt, the incline could not be more than 8 degrees, the road had to be wide (no one with a $100,000+ RV wants scratches down the sides from trees & shrubs, bridges have to support thousands of pounds, and pr...

PART I         Last summer, my spouse was fed up with all the tourists and the heat at the beach.  We did experience some very hot, dry days and the beaches were packed .  On our escape to the mountains in September, he wanted to explore the possibility of purchasing a property in the mountains.  We spent three weeks in Boone and two weeks in Asheville exploring various communities only to realize what we thought we wanted wasn't as easy to find as we thought it would be. What did we want?  We wanted unrestricted land because we wanted to put in an RV pad with utilities which meant we had to have easy access to the property and my husband wanted a high elevation so it would be cool in the summer...turned out to be contradictory.  We didn't want another house to maintain.  I spoke to sev...

It was only 2.7 and centered at Mountain City, about 25 minutes away, but we felt it in downtown West Jefferson at our office.  A strange rumbling and over in seconds.  First for me in Ashe (though I was in CA for the Northridge one and felt that) though it has happened here before.  For more, go to the Jefferson Post story.

The Crooked Road Ramblers of Crumpler, NC, were the featured players at this week's free outdoor concert (every Friday night at 5:30) at te BackStreet Park in West Jefferson, NC. Here are a few photos from last night's concert.              Bill & Suzanne Montgomery, owners of the The Barn Landscape & Garden Center (plus antiques) in West Jefferson, took a much needed break to enjoy this event after a busy Friday.                 The park is just one block off of West Jefferson's downtown.                     The audience particpated, learning the Virginia Reel.

Talked today with our local weather guru, Joe, who works at Parker Tie Hardware and he said that he doesn't have any more beans in the jar, so we're done with snow for the winter.  In an earlier blog I noted that he puts a bean in a jar for every fog in August, and then predicts how many snows we'll get that next winter.  Based on the thickness of the fog he determines whether the snow will be 4" or more, or under 4" - and to count as a snow we have to have enough coverage to be able to track a rabbit. He told me today that he's out of beans, and though we may get a flurry and we'll still get cold and frosts, we're done with the snow.  I treasure this mountain wisdom, and Joe is usually right on each year.  Today he told me about Dogwood Winter and Blackberry Winter.  During the blooms ...

The Spring Equinox has come, and to prove that spring is here, I photographed a Trout Lily this morning.  And the Vinca (see purple flower) is blooming in the garden already!  And the forsythia is breaking into the first blooms.  Everywhere else the signs are clear - birds herald the morning (always the first sign that winter is on its way out), and "our" pair of cardinals (they come back every year) are incorporating our car's sideview mirrors into their mating ritual again this year.  We live at 3400 feet above sea level, and spring unfolds at different times depending upon the elevation.  I go a bit lower and see forsythia in almost full bloom when mine are just starting to open. When I'm visiting somewhere off the mountain and tell people we have snow in North Carolina they are alwa...

When I grew up in Massachusetts, we called this time of year mud season.  As I daily scrape mud off my boots and when wearing nice shoes look carefully where I walk, I long for bright sunny 70 degree days.  The birds, the daffodils pushing up through the damp loamy soil, and the peepers in the ponds are all promising me that spring is truly around the corner - even though we had a foot of snow recently!  This is definitely the time of year when thoughts turn to summer vacations, which leads people to think about the mountains and summer getaways to the cool air that beckons folks to leave their hot piedmont cities and head to the hills. When you come visit Ashe County, located in the northwest North Carolina Mountains, and rent a great cabin for your holiday, and your thoughts turn to i...

Snow hit the High Country this week - about 9 inches at our house here one the eastern slope of Three Top Mountain.  The montain is the 2nd tallest in the County, at about 5000 feet.  Though I haven't been to the top, my husband and son have hiked this many times, including camping up there in the fall.  From the top, you get 360 degree views.  Well over 2000 acres of the mountain are State gamelands, open to the public.  The State and the Nature Conservancy have worked closely over the years to preserve this mountain.  The Nature Conservancy has been very involved in the Ashe County area, preserving about 5 of our moutain tops and continually acquiring more land to add to the preserves.  They have been developing "wild game corridors" - tracts of undeveloped land that connect the peak...
