New Bern was founded by Baron Christopher von Graffenried in 1710. Von Graffenried named the settlement after his hometown of Bern, the Swiss capital. It is North Carolina second oldest town.Although New Bern is very much a modern city it continues to grow, its charm remains historic. Travel back over in time by exploring Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens and other locations throughout the city.   Your North Carolina Broker          Sonja Babic        252-617-0861 www.SonjaBabic.com

I have been reading the news a little(it scares me to death!) but alway seem to find solace in the golden rule of real estate.  That rule for me is"ALL REAL ESTATE MARKETS ARE LOCAL". When I see the headlines about the US real estate market I go and pull the numbers.  Here's what the average and median sale prices look like for the area served by the Neuse River Region Association of REALTORS for 2003-2008.  Sorry, I could not get the median price for 2003 (MLS problem) but anyway I thought it was informative. I'm in eastern North Carolina...What's you market doing?  We all stronger when we know our number and can discuss the "truth" about our markets.  We are the experts, right? I going to sell some houses in 2009, how about you?

Today was a sad day for me as I drove into the parking lot of our local Goody's store. Goody's announced just a few weeks ago that they would be closing their doors for good. As I waited to get into the store, I spoke with a woman who also could not believe that our New Bern store was closing.  We spoke about the state of the economy and how it has affected New Bern. I had asked her if she had hear about the lay offs at Hatteras Yachts. She told me that her husband was one of the lucky ones who did not get laid off from Hatteras but she said it would not be long before her husband lost his job. Many stories such as this one are being told all over the area from gas stations to major industries, our area has not been spared by what is occurring around the globe. The very sad part about t...

New Bern is covering up for the cold front!   Weather forecasters expect temperatures to reach the low to mid teens in New Bern on Saturday morning, the coldest air the area has felt in about five years. Officials are advising people to stay indoors and take their plants and pets with them. Cold air has already caused several accidents around the county as we were seeing some ice on the roads. Officials are warning drivers to watch out for slick bridges and overpasses the next several days. A cold front will begin to move through the area today, bringing the coldest arctic air New Bern will feel this winter and high temperatures are expected to stay in low 30s for the next 3-4 days. Some local golf courses are closing as they are covering greens...

After falling for more than three months, gasoline prices in the New Bern area are quickly rising again this week. Prices at some stations increased at least 15 cents in about 24 hours Wednesday. Fuel Warehouse on Glenburnie Road was selling a gallon of unleaded for $1.52 on Tuesday afternoon. The price was $1.58 on Wednesday morning and $1.68 by the afternoon. The national average was also $1.68, seven cents higher than the same time last week. Those prices fell to about $1.50 in the New Bern area in recent months, as crude oil prices plummeted from $140 to $33 a barrel, a five-year low according to the federal Energy Information Administration. The good news is that prices should stay low this year! Try this great site on MSN that lets you find best deal on gas in your town http://aut...

Wow it is December ......again.....and we realize that 2008 is almost over!   2008 Has been a very challenging year for most of us with a declining Real Estate Market, summer of astronomical gas prices, stock market roller coaster, elections and last how about Clay Aiken being gay!  I just wanted to use this opportunity to extend a big "Thank You" to each and every one of you, for the huge impact you had on my life this year. Especially for all the support and e-mails I received.......without you, I'm sure that 2008 would have been extremely boring. As always I am outmost grateful to all of you that have trusted me with your real estate business and wanted to let you know how much I do appreciate that! You helped me through this challenging year and thanks to you I am still only a phone...

Well as we get to the end of the 2008 sales year it's time to look at the trend lines for closed transactions vs. pending transactions for the area covered by the Neuse River Region Association of REALTORS®.  The chart below follows the old line" a picture is worth a thousand words".

This is a dramatic video (30-second, very short) about how to deal with acommon kitchen fire ... oil in a frying pan. Read the following Introduction, then watch the show ... It's a real eye-opener!! At the Fire Fighting Training school they would demonstrate this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field. An instructor would don a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10 foot pole, toss water onto the grease fire. The results got the attention of the students. The water, being heavier than oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a thirty foot high fireball that resembled a nuclear blast. Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fire ball hits the ceiling and ...
