I don’t think I will ever forget the day our daughter called and asked “what would you say if I told you I wanted to join the Navy”?  I can’t believe I actually responded so calmly but, after taking a moment to think, I told her I thought it would be an excellent experience as well as a wonderful and honorable thing for her to do.  I am sure she was expecting a different reaction, maybe even hoping I would try to talk her out of it but I didn’t!!   I remember the look on her face as she was being sworn in.  I remember writing her letters every day she was in boot camp and always having my cell phone within reach so I wouldn’t miss her call!   Two years ago today our little girl, now all grown up and a Sailor in the United States Navy, graduated from Boot Camp.  I remember her father an...

Many of the names you’ll see and hear in Murphy NC and the western NC mountains come from the Cherokee.  What does the word Nantahala mean?  If you keep seeing words like Nantahala and aren’t sure how to pronounce them or where it came from, you’re not alone and it's a question we get quite alot.  The Nantahala National Forest was established in 1920 under authority of the 1911 Weeks Act. This act provided authority to acquire lands for national forests to protect watersheds, to provide timber, and to regulate the flow of navigable streams.  The forest took its name from the Cherokee word nondayeli, meaning "noonday sun." The Cherokee word is appropriate because of the number of steep gorges in the forest where the sun only reaches to the valley floor at midday.     Nantahala National F...

There are only a few signs left here in Murphy, NC mountains of the gorgeous Fall season we’ve had.  It was so beautiful and this years autumn hues and great weather were perfect for enjoying our surrounding nature in the NC, GA and TN mountains - our favorite time to hike too.  We had bunches of  “leaf lookers” here visiting and taking in the seasonal views and festivals. More and more of the leaves are falling and soon our lawns will be raked into piles and burned or bagged away. So take some time to enjoy the last few signs of the season as we get ready to decorate and plan our Thanksgiving dinners and get-togethers. All too soon we’ll be welcoming in Ole Man Winter here in the mountains!   Lee & Carol Barbour ~ The Mountain Living Teamwww.MurphyMountainLiving.com

What to expect when a Realtor is showing your Murphy NC home. When you receive the call from us for a showing, keep in mind that the agent is showing lots of homes and can be spread out all over Cherokee County, NC and just over the GA state line too.It is sometimes difficult to set precise times for showings so please try to be flexible. Allowing for a window of an hour or so for arrival is a good rule of thumb. Sometimes buyers will take a little longer at some homes and others they may not take more than five minutes. Please don't be upset with the Realtor and their Clients if they are a little early or running a little late - you don't want that to be their impression of your home, and it will be.If you are going to be at home, sometimes we can call you when they are about 20 minute...

Our days are getting shorter... Don't forget to set your clocks BACK this weekend. Before you go to bed on Saturday evening in Murphy, set your clock BACK one hour so you'll show up on time starting Sunday, November 4th as we Fall Back here in the mountains. This is the perfect time and weather for sitting outside gathered around the fire pit with family and friends too. Make sure to change the batteries in your carbon monoxide and fire detectors.Every Spring we move our clocks one hour ahead and "lose" an hour during the night and each Fall we move our clocks back one hour and "gain" an extra hour. But Daylight Saving Time (and not Daylight Savings Time with an "s") wasn't just created to confuse our schedules.Daylight Saving Time was instituted in the United States during World War I i...

Murphy, NC celebrated Halloween on Duke Street and the weather was perfect and the streets filled. It’s a tradition in Murphy as October 31 turns our downtown area into one of the popular places for Trick-or-Treating young and old alike. The Murphy Police Department blocks of a long stretch of Duke Street and heading down Valley River Avenue from 6-9 pm to vehicular traffic, so it’s the perfect place for filling your bags with goodies. This was our new granddaughter, Notla, first  Halloween and we had to tag along...after all she can’t eat all that candy.          Murphy, NC is a great small town and we love living here in Cherokee County. As we walked through the streets and up to all the houses we saw so many people from the community and their families. There are many historic and ol...

My Funniest Story? Yes, it’s funny NOW!  But if my memory serves me, it wasn’t so darned funny as it was playing out.   Murphy North Carolina, where we lived at the time, is a quaint small town with a “historical downtown district” full of centuries old buildings.  It’s the kind of Mayberry type downtown in which people like to stroll the streets window shopping.  Back when we owned our own office, it was situated in a prime location just off the square with huge picture windows.  Needless to say we posted all our listings in the windows and captured lots of “lookers” who quickly became buyers.  We even trained our agents on how to approach the window shoppers and convert them! But, back to the story!  Early one evening when all the agents had gone home and Bill and I were at the office...

The Panther Top Fire Tower in Murphy, NC is open to the public so make sure to take advantage of the great fall weather and spectacular views. Panther Top Tower is located about 12 miles west from downtown Murphy, NC  and offers a great opportunity to climb the tower for some amazing 360 degree views!   When we were there the USFS Ranger and a Volunteer pointed out where the other fire towers used to be, water towers, mountain ranges and where the Bald Eagles were nesting. Another interesting item inside the tower was the Osbourne Fire Finder that was used for triangulating where the fires were. The 30 ft. former live-in Panther Top lookout tower was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940.  Standing atop a 2,293 ft. summit it is the westernmost tower in the state. The Fo...

The perfect end to a beautiful day!  Today several of the agents in our office got together and held a Multi-House Open House in a subdivision in our market.  The day started very chilly -- about 20 degrees less than yesterday.  It was overcast and gloomy and not the sort of day anyone would choose to venture out unless necessary.  It was a day designed for snuggling up in front of the fireplace with a good book! When I was packing up the paperwork, candles and goodies from my open house, as  usual, I placed my camera on the front seat.  “You never know what you might see” the little voice in my head reminded me.I hadn’t gone a mile down the road when I saw a deer standing in the woods next to the road. I immediately pulled over in the grass and grabbed the camera.  I opened the door and...
