Do you find yourself asking, is the timing right to put my house in Martin's Point on the market right here in the middle of winter? The answer is simple, yes. Unlike other areas, where home sales peak and fall with the ebb and flow of the school system, home sales in Martin's Point are not restricted by families looking to relocate. Often, busy professionals find it more convenient to shop for a second home during the winter when traffic and vacationers do not get in the way. Winter shopping for homes is restricted by the weather back home which sometimes keeps the buyers trapped up north but the usual time restraints do not get in the way.The graph below shows the number of homes sold in each month in Martin's Point from July 2014 thru July 2015. The chart records the actual date of c...

Each summer I get asked this question in multiple variations. There was a time when the  shops would close up for the off season once Labor Day hit and everything would all but come to a stop. Not any more. The Outer Banks (OBX) has really become a 10 month resort with different groups coming at different times. There is the pattern as I see it.   June, July, & August: These are definitely the busiest months down here with families getting away while the kids are off from school.  They will often spend 6 hours traveling through 5 states just to spend another 2 hours covering the last 20 miles.   September & October: The big families have all gone back home to work & school. Now you see many “empty nesters” coming down to enjoy a quieter, less expensive Outer Banks. The weather on t...

There is also a silent auction and other contests going to to help raise money for the horses. According to an article in the Virgina Pilot onlinethe Outer Banks' only Walmart store is still slated to be upgraded to a Supercenter, but it could be this time next year before its completed. The expansion will be take place in an area behind the store while the interior will be totally redesigned. The initial expansion was scheduled for this spring but a longer planning process was needed. Construction is slated to begin after the summer tourist season is over and be ready by spring 2012.

It does not happen very often but it actually snowed, just a little, on the Outer Banks Friday night while just across the bridge in lower Currituck snow covered the ground by Saturday morning. For those of us that live here we normally get some flurries or a dusting every year. In the 9yrs that I have lived here there has only been snow on the ground twice and one of those was last years whopping 3 inches. Many children like mine had never actually seen that much snow on the ground so to them it was like 3 feet. It was time to turn the boogie boards in the sleds, make a snowman, and have snowball fights. It was one of those Kodak moments for sure and my kids have been asking me if I think they will get to do it again this winter. While most of us spend the year in shorts, sandals, and ...

House Flooded Inside! This is a true story two times over. Several years ago one of my buyers in Ocean Sands on the Outer Banks had the ice maker water line fail and the house flooded inside. Since this was a rental home and in the off season, it was some time before the problem was found. And . . . the kitchen is on the top floor. Can you imagine the damage caused?!? Then a few weeks ago one of my Kitty Hawk neighbors had the exact same problem. Of course, this is a second home so, once again, the home was vacant for a few days. Another house flooded inside! Prevent this from happening to you. Check your ice maker water line between the wall valve and refrigerator. Many of these lines are plastic. The failure is usually at the "o" ring at the appliance connection. Go to your local hard...

Sunday Morning Breakfast on the Outer Banks What is it about the idea of leaving church and heading for our favorite place for Sunday morning breakfast on the Outer Banks? I hope you have your favorite spot for that special Sunday treat and it's as good as mine. If you travel to the Outer Banks be sure and plan on having breakfast any morning at Stack 'Em High in Kitty Hawk at milepost 4.5. Um-m-m good. They have the usual fare. Fried or scrambled eggs, omelets, sausage, country ham, bacon, toast, hash browns, grits, waffles, French toast, pancakes. Let me just say my usual order is 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns, wheat toast and coffee. I love the hash browns. They must sprinkle some magic over them before serving. This is not the average Sunday morning breakfast on the Outer Banks! But wa...

Many times I feel so lucky to call the Outer Banks my home. It is such a special place to live and visit. I was over at a cookout in my neighborhood the other night with some good friends and as the sun was about to go down I snapped a few photos that were so pretty I decided not to keep them to myself. The photos were taken from my neighbors deck( not a bad view to have every night) looking back across the Sound just north of the Wright Memorial Bridge in Kitty Hawk.  I hope you enjoy the pics. If you have not already visited the Outer Banks please come down and if you have please come back!! Dandelions Commons Weeds? I think not! Who can call this Flower a weed? Dandelions greet the day with a bright, sunny, burst of yellow. They scream, "Cheer!" Ok, so you have this unrealistic desire for a green lawn, no weeds, no color, no character. Well, kill dandelions if you must, but you will loose. And ... you know why! Each child (and those a child at heart) knows the pleasure of blowing those wonder white fuzz balls of dandelion seed into the wind. There they are lying in wait for you to turn your back. Just a quick blow of breath. Seeds dancing across the yard, across the neighborhood, across the town, across the nation. Just think you may have a dandelion growing in your yard that blew in from the Outer Banks! I took the photo above in my Kitty Hawk front yard as my husband fro...

40 Shades of Green - Outer Banks Living Ireland, its people, and the folklore are wonderful. I love hearing their speech as well as their stories. Everything seems to come alive in my mind. Perhaps it's because my mother was a Kelley. Through her I claim a bit of Irish. There are their blessings: May the Road Rise to Meet You ... You can probably finish it. Then there are the 40 shades of green that represents the beauty in the lush greens found throughout Ireland. I've not been there, but a trip there is on my To Do list. I believe the Outer Banks must hold some of the Irish blessing. Though I'm not sure we have 40 shades of green, the Outer Banks does offer up many shades. The photo above was taken this Spring on The Woods Road in Kitty Hawk. Yes, Outer Banks Living offers a beautiful...

Come Home to Kitty Hawk Landing in Kitty Hawk NC on the Outer Banks for Boating, Fishing and Beach Living where you will find the best of second home or year round living. Though Kitty Hawk Landing is off the beaten path, it is easy to find. Often residents joke if they see an out of state license plate, someone is lost. After crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge onto the Outer Banks, just travel to the third stop light at The Woods Road and take a right. Drive down The Woods Road to Twiford Road and take another right. Enjoy the short drive through the woods and bogs in Kitty Hawk. You may see an egret or heron in one of the canals or bogs waiting for lunch to swim by. At the end of Twiford turn right again. Go over the bridge across a canal. Keep going until you are at the cemetary. At...
