Today is the day many Camp Lejeune families have been eagerly awaiting and anticipating for the past 7 months.  Today Dad, Mom or Husband returns from Iraq. It is a tradition of the Camp Lejuene military community  for the families of returning Marines make to make "Welcome home" signs and hang them on the fence along Highway 24 entering Jacksonville.  These signs are original and personal.  It is a heart warming sight to ride along the highway and see the signs awaiting the arrival of these families' loved ones.  Along this section of the highway, the median is lined with Bradford Pear trees that were planted in honor of those Marines who died in Lebanon in 1986.  There is one tree for each Marine who lost his life and is known as The Guardian of Peace Memorial.   The trees were donate...

John Cooney, a retired Marine and resident of Jacksonville, Onslow County, N C, has always had a tremendous respect for the American flag.  It pained him to see a  torn, tattered or incorrectly displayed flag. So he made it his mission and  a habit whenever he saw a worn, tattered flag to stop and ask the owner to replace or repair it.  His story is told in the Jacksonville Daily News by Jennifer Hlad.Recently, according to the story, it seemed to Mr. Cooney that there were more and more flags that needed replacing and he could not, personally, stop at every location as he traveled  to and from his home in Jacksonville, N C.    He made the decision to go online and seek the assistance of other Hubert, Jacksonville, Swansboro and surrounding Onslow County veterans to help him with his mi...
