After a several month discussion,  NC has given it's approval for CMC  (Carolina's Medical Center) to build an Emergency Care Out Patient Complex in Harrisburg!!This urgent care center will have, basically, everything a hospital would have, but it will not have beds.  The proposed site for the complex is the corner of I-485 and Rocky River Road, across from the Brookdale Shopping Center.  It should be open in late 2008 or early 2009.This is fantastic news for Harrisburg.  People are relocating to our region with many different needs.  Quality medical care within a reasonable distance is of the utmost importance to many families.  This center ensures that quality care is 'right around the corner.'  Partner that with CMC University and CMC Northeast Medical Centers within 15 minutes of Ha...

Harrisburg came by the name from Mr. Robert Harris and his family in 1874.  Mr Harris owned land in Harrisburg as early as 1766, he sold right-of-way  to the railroad in the 1850s.  The depot then took the name of Harris Depot after the family.  In 1874 the depot underwent a name change and became Harrisburg.  The Harrisburg Depot closed in 1933.In 2006 the old depot was moved a few feet from it's original location and reopened as the Historic Harrisburg Post Office and General Mercantile.  The local Farmer's Market is located there and offers fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, homemade baked goods, canned items as well as local craftsmen and is open from 4-7pm on Monday afternoons through October 28th.  This general store offers a glimpse into Harrisburg's rich history.  Our t...

If you are interested in living in a neighborhood with a down home feel then maybe Rocky River Crossing is for you. Started in the late 1990s Rocky River Crossing is one of Harrisburg's gems. Sidewalks line the main drive and the side streets and cul-de-sacs are wide enough to enjoy a bike ride or a stroll through the neighborhood. Built by Pulte, Shea, and MDC (now McCar) homes, this neighborhood offers an more than the cookie cutter style of so many neighborhoods. With a clubhouse, a pool, basketball, and walking trails, you will find something for everyone. Home prices range from the high $190's to the mid $300s. There are currently 15 homes on the market, including this lovely 4 bedroom home on Ironwood Dr. CLICK HERE for a VisualTour of this listing. The current average list price ...

And am no longer a candidate for Harrisburg NC Town Council. The main reason that I've decided to withdraw my candidacy is that I've been selected to sing in a very small choral group-and it's an opportunity that I can't pass up at this time.  After all, I'm getting older and I won't be able to sing forever (at least not without sounding like someone in the Mayberry choir!).  The new group is called VOX- led by David Tang and Peppie Culvar, and we'll be singing Bach's St John's Passion in a movie, as well as participating as the chorus for Aida, with Opera Carolina.  And since rehearsals are on Monday nights, and so are Town Council meetings, I'm choosing to sing. There are sure to be a lot of folks with a comment about my leaving this (ugly) race, but so be it.  God gave me a gift of vo...

I am sure you all have seen the headlines. We can’t even hide from them can we! The real estate market around the country is faltering. The good news is that the Charlotte area market is not, I repeat, NOT losing value. Our properties are continuing to work for us. In Harrisburg this is especially true.   Our average homes sale in 2006 was $272,607. Thus far in 2007 our home sale is $296,654. This is great news folks! We have had 192 homes sell in Harrisburg in 2007. 131 Resale homes averaged sales price were $260,569 for an average of 2402 square feet; while new construction slowed a bit with only 61 sales averaging $374,149 for 3246 square feet.   We do have a lot of active inventory right now. We have 145 active listings in Harrisburg with an average list price of $341,540 (99 resale...

I f you aren’t already aware, when a property requests a zoning designation change, the city puts a big, red zoning “Z” out front.  This sign is there to let the fine folks of Harrisburg know that change is afoot.  It is, then, the citizen’s responsibility to find out what they feel they need to know. Well, there are plenty of “Z”s out there right now so i thought I would share with you some of the current proposals. The most important of these is the “Z” on Morehead Road.  It is directly across from the entrance to Rocky River Crossing.  This property is a little over 2 acres and is flanked on each side by other homes in the neighborhood.  The proposed change is a daycare. The person/people looking to buy the property have approached the city to obtain a conditional use permit (They wa...

If you live in or around Harrisburg NC, you very likely travel down Morehead Road on a regular basis (this is our connector between 29 and 49).  Today, you noticed a new sign on the property for sale on Morehead right before the Rocky River, rezoning notice.  A timely call placed to the Harrisburg Town Hall will tell you that it's not really a rezoning notice-rather it's for a hearing to change the conditional use on the property.A 17,000 square foot daycare facility is planned for that location.  You heard me-17000 sqft-huge!  And in case you're not quite sure how to envision that size-the Ruckus House daycare, located on Hwy 49 at Harrisburg Town Center, is 15000 sqft.    Whether you're for or against this enormous daycare center, if you want your voice to be heard, the hearing for th...

Hot off the presses....we now have mandatory water restrictions in Harrisburg NC as a response to the current drought situation. Yes, we had a thunderstorm last night (first rain in what, 6 weeks?), but it wasn't enough.  And too many people aren't conscious of their water usage.  So here we go:*Watering and irrigation of lawns, ornamental plants, and gardens shall occur only between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM on Wednesday and Saturday. Businesses whose stock in trade is live plants, including nurseries and retail garden centers are exempt from this provision.*Planting of new ornamental plants or seeding of lawns shall be deferred until the water emergency no longer exists.*Use of water for washdown of outside areas, including but not limited to driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and public bu...

Hot off the presses in Harrisburg NC, where we've been struggling with the issues that surround smart growth! Our town turned down a zoning request from Lowe's Home Improvement in the fall, and the town was promptly sued by Lowe's.  Lovely, right?Last night, the town received word from the judge that the town's decision to deny rezoning was upheld.  If we don't want Lowe's there, we don't have to have Lowe's there.Of course as most of you know, my biggest goal for the town is to keep out Wal-Mart and its ilk.  This kind of decision should give heart to the folks who support smart growth.  Which means sometimes saying yes, and sometimes saying no.My only disappointment in not having Lowe's on that site, is that they were going to provide a 10 acre site for our new Harrisburg YMCA.  So the...

What in the world am I thinking, you say?  Well, I figure a little new blood might be good for the town council.  We've had a lot of drama around these parts in trying to determine what we want the future of Harrisburg to be.Stay tuned for the campaign updates (such as they are).  I'm determined to spend no more money on this campaign than the $5.00 required to file my candidacy.  It's truly ridiculous, the waste of money and trees that is represented by the little signs all over town...Oh-and you heard it here first!!

Folks around here are really excited about the opening of the new high school located in Harrisburg NC. Hickory Ridge High School! This is the new crest for the school, with its chosen colors of silver, navy and white. I guess we're out of mascots, though...=)The new facility is going to be nice, designed for 1500 students on 116 acres. The football facility is quite impressive and has helped to bring in the new head coach from Mooresville Senior High, Marty Paxton. The school's name has generated a lot of controversy, as it's located inside Harrisburg NC.  So, many folks were gunning for Harrisburg High School as a name. But the school board, in their infinite wisdom, decided to name it after the road instead, Hickory Ridge, since some of the students have Concord NC as a mailing address...
