Attached is an email from the Director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. Each year as we struggle to find that achievable balance of man & wildlife incidents occur. Sometime they are truly accidents, sometimes they are truly intentional, and sometime we just cannot tell.  Please feel free to leave you comments and thoughts.    A deceased foal was reported alongside the road near an intersection in the vicinity of 1945 Sandfiddler Road early this morning. Wesley responded and his records show that the filly was born in July. She was in excellent body condition. She had been deceased for only a few hours at most. He took her to Dominion Equine Clinic for examination. The cause of death was determined to be trauma to the cranium. The Sheriff’s department has been notified and is investigati...

As a REALTOR many think of us as people driving fancy cars, dressed in a nice suite. Some may see us as doing our "easy" work with the aid of your laptop and smart phone. Well let me enlighten you. There are many other tools to our trade that some of us simply cannot live with out. For me two importantant tools are kept under my kitchen sink. Can you spot them?     Can't find them? It is the OFF and the REPEL.   Having been a licensed REALTOR in three states, I can tell you that working different area have different challenges. Here in along the 4-wheel drive beaches of Carova, just north of Corolla, NC on the Outer Banks of North Carolina one of our BIG challenges is bugs. Although the majority of these communities were created 40 years ago, we are still about only 20% developed. What ...

People who only come to visit Carova in the summer see our beaches as thick, fluffy and easy to get stuck in, but it is really only like that in the summer months. As the fall approaches, the loose sand gets pulled out into the sand bars and the ruts don't become quite so deep. What this also does is expose the remains on an old maritime forest. Completely covered over during the summer these tree stumps can now stick out over two feet. Fortunately for the locals, the stay still unlike the 5 year olds of June-Aug.

This is one that I first wondered when I discovered Carova. Do people actually try to raise children in this type of environment? The answer is YES! And, from what I’ve seen, they do a great job. The parents basically have 3 options to them. 1.       They can drive their children down the beach to the Winks on the “hard Surface” road, and from there the child can catch a school bus to one of the Dare County schools. I know one family doing this and they have to leave the house by 5:40 AM to catch the bus at 6:00. If traffic is good the bus comes back at 5:10, so the kids can get home be 5:30. There is a lot of road work in Duck going on right now, and it has been 5:30 and latter that I have seen the buss pull out of Winks to finally head back South. 2.       They can take their childre...

Corolla North Carolina. Outer Banks Horses and Houses. Photo tour. The following photo tour was taken in the Northern Outer Banks area of Corolla Light. This is one of our favorite family vacation spots. The houses are huge and designed to be rented by extended families or lots of friends.  We usually go with 7-10 people with friends and family wandering in and out for a couple days as their schedules permit.         "Corolla NC" Create a free slideshow with Picnik!           This is a rare scene.  You can see horses easily in this area of the Outer Banks, but seldom in the surf. This situation occurred when  an older stallion chased a younger male away from his herd of females. This was not a friendly romp. The young one stayed in the water until the older stallion was out of sight ove...

Some folks say they go to the beach in North Carolina for years and never see the Wild Horses of Corolla. Fortunately for me this group decided to come out for an evening stroll.   The horses are protected and since they are wild you can not feed them or try to lure them closer to you otherwise you might incur a heft fine. It is thought that the horses are decendants of Spanish horses which escaped when the Spanish landed iin the area in the 16th century. They are fun to watch as they walk along the beach and seem oblvious to the gawking beach goers.

Earl came and went almost a week ago, but the after shock of wind & waves have continued to remind us of how lucky we were. Today however the ocean was practically as calm as glass when this picture taken in Swan Beach. The beach itself was also nice an smooth, a wonderful treat after the abuse the traffic has caused to it June July & August.

Mark your calendars! So you thought that with the end of summer came the end for reasons to visit the Currituck Outer Banks, guess again. There are many events that go on through the year. Currituck Heritage Park continues to have it Wednesday wine festivals throughout September from 3:00 - 7:00, and when that is done we have Heritage Day in Corolla on October 3rd. This event is more geared for the residents & homeowners, but of course all are welcome to come & enjoy the festivities.

Well, Hurricane Earl came & went through the night, with out nearly as much wind and rain as many were fearing. When we woke up this morning it was a normal rainy day. By noon, the rain has pretty much stopped so we decided to take a drive from our house to the beach to see what the conditions of the beach was like as well as the conditions of our roads. There are many low spots in our sand roads that can easily fill up with water making it an extra challenge to navigate them.  Today it was not too bad by Carova standards as you can see in this video.

Today has been an interesting day on the Outer Banks.  This is my first time here for a mandatory evacuation, and it was amazing to see the roads go from "bumper to bumper" to practically a ghost town within about six hours. High tide today in Carova left most of the beach only about three lanes wide, and in a couple of expected spots nonexistent. This video was taken in North Swan Beach at about 6:00 this evening.  The surf is not looking friendly, and it is the deepest shade of green I have ever seen here.

Here is an excerpt from a report dated July 30, 2010 from the the North Carolina Department of Transportation/Turnpike Authority about the Mid Currituck Bridge. Feel free to draw your own conclusions. Mid-Currituck Bridge The Authority is progressing with the environmental study process for the Mid-Currituck Bridge in Currituck County, a seven-mile, two-lane toll project that would cross the Currituck Sound connecting the Currituck mainland at U.S. 158 near Aydlett with N.C. 12 on the Outer Banks south of Corolla. The preliminary cost estimate for the project is $632 million, with final costs to be determined during design. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2011, with completion in late 2014. Last year, officials signed a public-private Pre-Development Agreement (PDA) wit...
