A California developer plans to spend about $2 million to renovate a theater building that has been vacant for 5 years. They can begin converting the long-vacant Palace Theater on Copely Drive into an arts center. The center would feature a 400 seat entertainment venue, church, and other community gatherings and posibly a dance studio, music school and New York Theatrical production company. The Cornelius Board of Commissions unanimously approved a rezoning last week to allow developer Shaoul Levy of Santa Monica, California to proceed with the $2 million in renovations to the complex. The theater is on about four acres in Kenton Place, mixed-used development in the norhteast corner of NC 73 and West Catawba Avenue, beside Birkdale Village. Regional Roads Committee Supports Augustalee Concepts,Encourages Mecklenburg County To Approve TIF Financing  The Regional Roads Committee (RRC) voted May 29 to support concepts for the Augustalee development and to encourage Mecklenburg County to approve Synthetic TIF financing for the project.The RRC is composed of 17 Chambers of Commerce, as well as transportation and other leaders, throughout the 13-county Charlotte Region. I recently made a trip to Birkdale Village to T1 Tapas, a new restaurant in the area. I met a cool bartender named Scott who took very good care of me. The theme of the unique restaurant is "eat drink connect". CNN has even done a news story on this place! Wow! Lake Norman's First Turbo Turtle Race Saturday, May 9, 2009 | 2:00pm-5:00pm Midtown Sundries, Harborside   The Coca-Cola 600 is only a few weeks away but 10,000 cute Turbo Turtles will be racing this Saturday on Lake Norman.  The event is to benefit LifeSpan & Speedway Children's Charities.  Just off the shore line at Midtown Sundries 10,000 fake turtles will be dumped from boats in a closed course.  The race is expected to take about 15 min but these green guys may have a mind of their own.  Midtown has arranged for bands all day long starting at 2:00 pm and the race starts at 3:30.
