Starting this weekend, April 5, 2008, Charlotte residents will be able to water their lawns once per week for the first time since last year.  Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities just announced that the water restrictions are being loosened slightly to allow the once a week lawn watering. Other mandatory restrictions will remain in effect (residential car washing among others).  The once per week lawn watering day ends at Midnight, assigned days are below:  Odd numbered homes will be allowed to water their lawns on Saturdays.  Even numbered homes will be allowed to water their lawns on Sundays.  This is great news for homeowners as the spring season gets underway and marks the first change in water restrictions since September 2007. Now if we can just get some continued rainfall, maybe the...

Six days, 30,000 people and $30.7M. Not too shabby. That's how much the 2008 CIAA Tournament brought into Charlotte in Tourism dollars over its six day lifespan and city officials couldn't be happier. The Tournament, which has chosen to come back to the Queen City next year, has steadily grown in size and retail influence, bringing Charlotte businesses a welcome influx of cash. Better yet is that CIAA loyalty is very very high, with a reported 97% of attendees planning on returning next year. Next year come March, businesses will surely get ready for the "madness" buy preparing for the CIAA and then reaping the rewards of another great event for our city.

Ryan Homes builds new houses, but the company has reached the ripe old age of 60. They didn't get this far by building sub-par homes and the popularity of their Charlotte developments is a testament to their dedication to putting out a high quality product into the market. In fact, in 2007 Ryan Homes had the highest number of new home sales of any builder in Charlotte. Ryan Homes says their success is built on a high quality product, a commitment to taking care of their customer and Location, Location, Location. Congratulations Ryan. Here's to 60 more years!

Gateway Village residents and clients might lose out on some of their parking, but Bank of America plans to bring in a cool $27M for the 6 acre plot of land next to Uptown's first mixed-use development. Gateway Village has been quite successful, but Bank of America has decided to forgoe plans to develop a third phase of the project and give the opportunity to another party--possible Johnson & Wales University. As one of the largest and only remaining tracts of land left in the booming Uptown circle, it will be interesting to see what comes of the Parcel-Formerly-Known-As-Gateway Phase III.

All that dry weather we've had for the last few months has been a pain when it comes to your water bill and keeping your lawn green, but one positive is that it has helped many large-scale construction projects stay on or ahead of schedule and therefore under budget--airplane runways included. At Charlotte Douglas International Airport, plans for a third parallel runway have been operating ahead of pace because the rain has stayed away--allowing them to move massive amounts of dirt at a faster than normal pace. Still, with the unpredictable nature of future weather and the handing off of some aspects of the project to other parties, it is unclear what the final time table will be. But, for now, things look good at the airport and no doubt the dry weather has helped our Charlotte home bu...

We all have bad days, days when it seems like everything goes wrong, that we're spinning our wheels in utter futility, and nothing will ever get accomplished. I get that. I have bad days too, like any other human  being.  When someone acts in a rude, arrogant, dismissing, or condescending manner I'll usually try to understand that they may just be having a horrendous day and took their frustration out on everyone they communicate with. After all if someone's having a bad day usually they don't intend to spread personal enmity and attacks, they're just frustrated. However, when the rude, arrogant, dismissing, condescending or just plain nasty attitude increases or is spread over several communications: Sorry, but I have trouble buying that it's a symptom of other frustration....it may j...

Charlotte Short Sales When you're talking to a realtor about real estate in Charlotte, NC you're probably going to hear them mention Charlotte short sales. What are these? What do they mean? Most importantly, as the buyer, how do they affect you?A home is sold as a short sale when the seller is attempting to convince a lender to accept a discounted payoff in exchange for releasing the mortgage. This is usually done in order to prevent a home from being foreclosed upon, with the opinion that any money is better than no money. These homes can be a buyer's dream come true, since 99% of the time short sales sell for far less than their fair market value. There are a few buyer bewares you should be aware of before you hop in line to place a bid for a Charlotte short sale, however. The first t...

Trust us--you'll want to check out this building. The historical Trust building--a site that remains synonymous with Charlotte banking--has been developed into modern Uptown living spaces. Plus, the Interior Design Society is using it for their 2008 IDS Showhouse, so if you want to own a piece of Charlotte banking history or at least get a glimpse of it, you'll want to get over there before all the units sell out.   Visit Either:  The Charlotte Interior Design Society Or...  The Trust For more information. This year's proceeds will be benefiting Dove House.

Many people who hear about the Ballantyne area immediately think of country club homes on golf courses and high dollar residences that they could never afford.  When you tell someone that you live in the Ballantyne area they will say "oh, that is a nice area to live".  Well, they are right and what's more is you don't have to fork over your retirement savings in oder to live there. There are many great neighborhoods in the Ballantyne area that provide the same immediate access to Stonecrest, the Ballantyne Village and Theater and Ballantyne resort as the country club homes.  I know because I live in one.  Great location is everything in today's growing South Charlotte and the following neighborhoods have it all except a high price tag. Click on the neighborhood name to view current home...

A curb appeal checklist for the home seller! We love it. Curb appeal is one of those little things that can make or break a home seller's chance of getting offers. It's the first impression in the mind of potential buyers. A well kept and inviting yard can signal buyers that the rest of the house will follow suit. Likewise, tired and scraggly landscaping can signal that the rest of the home hasn't been cared for either. Nobody wants to create a negative picture in the buyer's mind and the Charlotte Observer's Home & Garden writers are here to help. Check out this article and their concise list of the biggest ways to optimize your yard for a quicker sale. If you're thinking about or already in the process of selling your home--you'll want to copy this one down and make sure each item is ...
