MEET MAGGIE Maggie is a very sweet, blue pit who has lived her life with a congenital defect that left one of her front legs severely deformed. Her other leg which bore the weight is bowed from the stress and is deteriorating. She was rescued recently by Charlie's Angels Animal Rescue in Brevard, NC.  The fact that she had managed, somehow, to live was a miracle. But the true miracle is a family on the other side of the state who has stepped up to adopt her and give her a better life...a life she deserves.  This family already has one dog who has no front legs and uses a cart to get around,  another special needs dog they rescued who is deaf, and they will now be welcoming Maggie into their pack. Sadly, in order to provide Maggie with any semblance of mobility, one leg will have to ampu...

When the call came in to the volunteers with Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue (CAAR) in Brevard, North Carolina, it wasn’t all that unusual. Like so many of the calls the organization receives, this was a call for help. Someone had found six puppies at the Transylvania County land fill. For the past two years, one of the land fill employees had been trying to gain the trust of an adult female dog who had made the land fill her home. He fed her and bought her a dog house to provide her with better shelter, but he could never gain enough trust that she would come to him. But when he found the dog’s six new born puppies in a storm drain, he knew he had to take action to protect the fragile puppies and get them into a safe place. Animal Control was called in to “trap” the mother dog, then alo...

Sellers:"I'm not going to give my house away" Buyers: "I'm looking for a bargain".   I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard those comments from sellers and buyers.  I haven't met a seller yet who says "Heck yea...let's just give it away to first person with a pulse". Likewise, I've never once had a buyer tell me they want to pay too much for a house, no matter what. But the first time we meet with a seller or a buyer I can guarantee that we'll hear one of those statements. In today's market, it's the buyer who is likely to win that tug of war. Smart sellers are learning that it's no longer enough to be the prettiest house on the block or the biggest house. And picking a price for no particular reason doesn't count as a pricing strategy. In today's market, you have to recognize the...

So you're thinking about buying land in the Brevard, North Carolina area. Great decision on your part.  Brevard is centrally located in western North Carolina and only about 30 minutes from Asheville, 20 minutes to Lake Toxaway, or 40 minutes to Cashiers. It is a wonderful place to be, whether it's year round or just for seasonal visits. So lace up your boots and let's get started. One of the first things to consider is that certain times of the year are better than others for scoping out that bit of land you've been looking into buying. In the summer, dense undergrowth can make it difficult to explore the land and the full foliage on the trees can make it difficult to see the bordering properties.  In the winter, snow and ice create challenges of another kind. In our opinion, if you wa...

Buyers Ready to Snatch Bargains This Spring. Are you Ready? Bargain prices on housing combined with low interest rates below 5 percent may bring the real estate market its busiest spring season in years, economists say. Distressed sales continue to put downward pressure on home prices, which may lure more buyers off the fence and ready to snag a deal during the typical prime-time buying season. Some builders are ramping up discounts on new homes as well as boosting commissions to brokers to try to spark more transactions. Sellers of existing-homes also are getting more competitive in pricing their homes. "After three years of the housing downturn, people are becoming much more realistic in terms of valuing their homes," says Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of R...

New Caregiver Facility for Brevard, Asheville & Hendersonville Areas - ElderWise Care Mission Statement: We were inspired to create a home health care agency specializing in senior care to meet the needs we saw as we watched as our own grandparents, parents, aunts, and uncles progress to the next season of their lives before us. We purposed in our hearts to provide the affordable care that we ourselves would want for our family members. We chose to become an independent agency, rather than a franchise, so we could redirect the money we would otherwise have to pay in franchise fees toward offering a higher quality of care and attracting a higher quality caregiver. Our agency was founded by a psychologist. We try to be sensitive to the large psychological changes and challenges that can b...

City of Brevard Taking a Look at Adding Back Fluoride in the City Water Brevard City Council in July 2007 decided to remove fluoride from the city water system after ONE resident cited health concerns, even with the local dentists and health officials opposed the removal of the fluoride. At least weeks meeting the there were a number of people including dentists that and City Council Woman Dee Dee Perkins didn't feel they were properly heard before the 2007 decision was made. I too agreed that the proper studies or the hearing of the researchers was not properly heard and a hasty decision was made. During the meeting local dentist Dr. Joe Cowart presented council with information from the state of North Carolina that indicated teeth decay among the local 5th graders had increased since ...

One of the Clay Team's favorite places to eat in Brevard, NC is The Square Root. It's located in the alley between Main Street and Jordan Street making it a perfect place to pop into for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is totally delicious. The historic building was once the home of the Transylvania Times newspaper and has been restored with a great touch that exudes a combination of art gallery-loft-restaurant. When you walk in, you'll immediately notice the floor. It is a hand-laid, hand-cut wood parquet floor. Each of the wood tiles were hand cut from local timber. The antique brick walls not only add a warm funky texture, they're a great back drop for the perfectly lit local art work that hangs on them. Much of the art work you see is for purchase. Another ex...

Summary of 2010 Squirrel Count in Brevard North Carolina Brevard's white squirrels would seem to be doing well as preparations are being made for the Seventh Annual White Squirrel Festival on Memorial Day weekend. Under the supervision of the Heart of Brevard, community volunteers conducted the 14th Annual Brevard Squirrel Count this past fall over a three square mile study area centered on the Courthouse. The Count is not meant to be a true census but rather an estimate of the percentage of the white versus the gray variant of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. This year's estimate of 37.1% is the highest yet on record, well above the 14 year average being 28.1%. Overall abundance of squirrels, both white and gray, was up representing the third highest in count history. The highest concentrati...

One of the really great things about being in the real estate business is that no two days are alike. Today we spent the early afternoon hours outside in the cool clean mountain air learning about trout farming at the Cantrell Creek Trout Farm just outside Brevard, North Carolina.  This family owned trout farm has been supplying restaurants, and other business with rainbow and brown trout for years. But, it's for sale now, and we spent the time with the seller and his dog Max learning about the workings of the farm and taking photographs and footage for a promotional video we're going to put together for him. It was fascinating to see how the farm works, from where the little hatchlings begin until they are ready for sale, something that takes about year. I learned that trout grow about...

Every where I look these days, I am seeing freshly tilled soil.  The area around Brevard, North Carolina is a rich agricultural area that has fields of century old family farms and small garden plots in virtually everyone's back yard. Several years ago there was a survey done by the local newspaper that reported that 60% of households in the area have a garden of some kind. This is the time of year, after winter is hopefully well on its way out, when people start turning soil and preparing their gardens for the planting and growing season. The same idea should hold true for sellers who plan to put their home on the market in the next 90 days. Use this shoulder season to take care of repairs, freshen up the look of the home inside and out, and of course, start turning some soil outside s...
