Every year on the 4th of July weekend, Red Lodge is host to the Home of Champions Rodeo. The event takes place over 3 days (July 2nd, 3rd and 4th) and every day is marked with a parade on main street. This year will mark the Red Lodge Rodeo's 80th anniversary!  For more info on the rodeo (including events, parade, tickets and the history), you can visit www.redlodgerodeo.com  . The following is a slide show of some of the photos I took in July 2008 of the parade and of the rodeo. If you are planning to be in the Red Lodge area in early July, you do not want to miss this event! It's Good to Be Here!! The above photos were taken at the gardens of the Beartooth Nature Center on June 24, 2009.   The staff members take very good care of the animals as well as the plants.  There is a lots of colorful flowers that provide for great landscaping near the entrance to the Center.  It's Good to Be Here!! This is my first AR post with a video slide in it. I would like to thank Jim Frimmer of San Diego for making me aware of Slide. Below is a slide show of my latest hiking trip.  The photos were all taken by my very good friend Marisa. Along with two other friends, we decided to hike on the Meeteetse trail (South Fork Grove Creek) this past weekend.  The trail was 3.5 miles round trip and it took us just over 2 hours to complete and involved an elevation gain of 1,200.   There were plenty of good views along the way of mountains, meadows, rocks, streams, wooded area and plenty of wild flowers. We packed some sandwiches and snacks for lunch and we stopped halfway for a little picnic with a very scenic view.  This was a very good trail for hiking with plenty of eye candy.  However, unless y...

I took in all the suggestions that I received from the earlier post (tWo vieWs With and Without) and I played with the photos to generate the following 3 photos (2 modified photos from the first photo and 1 modified photo from the second photo). Spending a little more time on touching up photos can make an ordinary photo look extraordinary.  I never played with my photos in my earlier posts besides cropping.  You can expect a little bit more touch ups and fun effects with future photos in my post.  Thank you for all the feedback received in my earlier post! It is June, the sun is shining and the sky is blue.  I took these two photos of Red Lodge today from the view point just East of town.  They are from two different angles.  Feel free to let me know which one you like. I will be working and doing an open house on Saturday but I have plans on Sunday to go whitewater rafting in Absarokee (just 30 miles from Red Lodge) with friends who are visiting this weekend from out of State.  It's Good to Be Here!! Do you love history and looking for an interesting thing to do in Red Lodge?   You should visit the Carbon County Historical Society and Museum! The mission of the museum is to preserve and communicate the history of the Carbon County area. The museum is located at 224 North Broadway, on the corner of Broadway and 8th Street.  It houses many old artefacts and pieces of history gathered from all over the County.  You will be amazed by the incredible wealth of history and archives offered at the museum.  My favorite is the interactive coal and hard rock mine exhibit on the mining in the area along with a replica of a mining tunnel in the basement of the building.  There are also exhibits on the American indians and homesteaders.  The museum is also the home to Carbon County Rodeo champion...

It is the beginning of another wonderful week.  The deers were up early as usual.  Here's a couple of them I captured at dawn. It's Good to Be Here!! Do you see a little orange in the sky (bottom right of previous picture)?  Here it is a glimpse more of the sky this morning.   Make it a magnificent Monday and a great week! If you want to see Red Lodge by night, check out the following sister post: Goodnight from Red Lodge, Montana All photos and/or written content produced by Gerry Khatchikian. One of the things I enjoy doing more since living in Red Lodge is to look at the stars at night.  It is very difficult to capture and show you this.  No photo can do justice to the feeling you get at looking at a clear sky at night and seeing the multitude of shining stars.  I did manage to take the following photo to show you the peaceful scenery at night time.  Good night and sweet dreams from Red Lodge!    All photos and/or written content produced by Gerry Khatchikian. This is the fourth and final part of a series of four posts on the Beartooth Scenic Byway.  If you want to see the first post, click on the following link: Highway to Heaven - Don't Pass this Up! (if you follow the links in the first three posts, you will get back to here). Not only have I seen some beautiful vegetation, flowers and views along the 57 miles from Red Lodge to Cooke City on the Beartooth Highway but I also ran across a couple of unexpected animal appearances. The first was by the following marmot standing on the edge of a rock cliff.     The second, even more fascinating to watch, was the following red fox trying to catch his prey underneath the snow. This completes the little bit of history and some of the magnificent views encountered in my most recent drive on the Bear...

This is part 3 of a 4 part series of posts on the Beartooth Scenic Byway.  If you want to see the first post, click on the following link: Highway to Heaven - Don't Pass this Up! (if you follow the links in the first two posts, you will get back to here). The Beartooth Pass is named after the Beartooth Mountains.  The Beartooth Mountains got their name from the shape of one of its peaks which resembles a bear's tooth.  Named "Na Piet Say", meaning "the bear's tooth", by the Crow Indians, this narrow pyramidal spire (seen in my photo below) was carved by glaciation.  I was lucky to also capture this majestic bird soaring in the sky and flying next to the bear's tooth. There are plenty of beautiful scenery along the way.  Check out this view of the Beartooth Butte at an altitude of 10,514...

I Survived the Beartooth Pass! This is the second of a 4 part series on the Beartooth Scenic Byway.  If you want to check the first part, just click on the following link: Highway to Heaven - Don't Pass this Up!  (you will be able to get back here with a link at the end of the first post).  I visited Yellowstone National Park with friends this past weekend.  We took advantage of the fact that the Beartooth Pass just opened recently to make our way from Red Lodge to the Northeast entrance of the Park.  Here is a sample of the photos that show the views from this very scenic Highway which reaches an altitude of almost 11,000 feet. Above two photos were taken from Vista Point Rest Area (notice the two portions of the highway at two different altitudes). View from the Gardner Lake Overlook....

Highway to Heaven - Don't Pass this Up! The Beartooth Highway Pass also known at the All-American Road and the Beartooth Scenic Byway is open! May 22 was the first day in 2009 it was opened and on Saturday, May 23, an opening celebration will take place at the Custer NAtional Forest Service Office, just South of Red Lodge. Hop in a car, a bike or a motorcycle for a scenic drive! From Red Lodge, you should not miss the opportunity to drive the Beartooth Scenic Byway. The Beartooth Highway has been described by former CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt as 'the most beautiful drive in America'.  This scenic drive is 54 miles long and takes about 3 hours to complete because your are zigzagging on the mountains and climbing to an altitude of nearly 11,000 feet.  But, if you are like most peopl...

The Beartooth Nature Center is a wildlife refuge for animals that are orphaned, injured (in the wild or through human contact) or imprinted (not able to live in the wild as a result of getting used to humans).  If you are visiting Red Lodge, Montana, this is one of the places you should see.  The center is host to about 70 animals and what is nice is that you get to see them at close range and learn more about them through interpretative displays and by observing them.   For more info about the Beartooth Nature Center visit http://www.beartoothnaturecenter.org/Site/Welcome.html The following are some of the best photos I took of my recent visit on May 3, 2009. This photo was taken on May 1st, 2009 on the road between Fromberg and Joliet, about 30 miles North of Red Lodge, Montana.  There is nothing like the smell of fresh air, good weather and some great views to make it a beautiful day and a joy to be working outside the office.  It's good to be here!! Today being Wednesday, I normally would post a Wordless Wednesday photo with my copyright and signature underneath it.  However, I made the decision that I will start posting a description with my photos to give the online community more details about the photos.  I hope you will still find this and future Not-So-Wordless Wednesday posts more enjoyable with the added descriptions.   In Red Lodge, we get to see a lot of deer.  Occasionally, we get to see a moose.  In the first photo are a couple of deer who just crossed the street near south of town (near the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 308) to get close to a moose made of Juniper wood in front of the Rocky Fork Juniper shop.  The Shop specializes in elegant, handcrafted furniture.  Visit http://www.rockyforkjuniper.com/ for ...

There is a new speciality food and wine store in town.  It's called Babcock & Miles!  Red Lodge is lucky to have its own gourmet food and wine shop.   The following is a partial list of some of their many food and wine offerings.  They have a wide assortment of cheeses, crackers, charcuterie, antipasti, oils, vinegars, coffees and teas.  They have a wonderful selection of European and domestic artisan cheese including many from smaller European providers.  Their charcuterie includes duck prosciutto, jambon de bayonne, saucisson sec, pheasant and vegetable terrine, and mousse truffee as well as many other pates and meats.  They have beautiful cuts of frozen duck breast, rabbit, and veal chops for delicious vacation gatherings.  Their wine department includes a broad selection of wines fr...

It was a beautiful sunny day in Red Lodge, Montana.  I decided to get my skis, boots and poles and head out to Red Lodge Mountain for some spring skiing.  After a short 5 mile drive from the south of the town of Red Lodge, I arrived to the following entrance sign.   Another mile and I made it to the parking area where there was plenty of places to park.   This is the view that was awaiting me from the parking area. After a quick walk I was at the chair lift and without waiting, I was on my way up and headed towards a great day of skiing. I got to the summit and could not resist to take this shot displaying the shadow of the big pulley of the chairlift.  The mountain is great for skiing as well as for snowboarding. I had heard the previous week that the Palisades ski lift was open for th...
