Haugan is about five miles from the Idaho border. The town was named for H. G. Haugan, land commissioner and comptroller for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Haugan was established and maintained as a pusher station for trains ascending the Coeur d'Alene Mountain grade. Savenac has an interesting past; we invite you to take our self-guided tour and learn how a honeymoon on horseback resulted in one of the largest and most beautiful nurseries in the West.
