Under a new proposal brought to the Bozeman City Commission, Bozeman may dig public cable lines to address the poor service and high prices of private internet/cable providers. Advocates pushing a publicly owned fiber-optic cable network say that digging public lines would increase competition among internet providers, helping improve their services and prices. The city would not provide Internet access directly but would install a common network that could be leased by private companies. Without needing heavy, upfront capital, the addition of small, private companies into the market could increase the current competition. As more businesses store their valuable information online, having affordable, reliable connections becomes all the more important. Considering two thirds of busines...

The City of Bozeman hopes to alleviate the very full rental and affordable housing situation in the coming year through regulation changes and increasing inventory. The Bozeman Department of Community Development has begun a review of current home building standards while starting development of new subdivisions and apartment complexes. A rental housing survey released this year reported that the vacancy rate in Bozeman was essentially zero at the time MSU students came back for fall semester. Gallatin County saw a huge population growth rate from 2002-2012 when it grew 32 percent. In a report released this month, it was one of the fastest growing counties in the Western United States. Coupled with MSU’s largest student body in its history, Bozeman found itself at rental capacity. Ch...

A new hotel will be coming to Bozeman—and no—it won’t be on North 19th. No, this hotel, called the Etha, will be right in downtown Bozeman and will be moving into (and on top of) the old Armory Building on Mendenhall. Investors hope the hotel can become more of a buzzing downtown hub, rather than a simple hotel. The hotel will have 8 stories, 102 rooms and include a 10,000 square foot ballroom for special events. The hotel will cater to the luxury market, aiming to provide travelers with all the expected perks and amenities. Building plans also called for a gastro-style pub/restaurant, which would help make the hotel a destination location for locals, as well as travelers. Plans had initially stalled on the building, due to the bid knocking out a large chunk of the investors’ budget. Th...

City commissioners approved a new 5 story building to be built on Mendenhall, following a recent trend of approvals for larger commercial buildings in the downtown area. The building will replace the soon to be demolished Opportunity Bank site. The building will inclue three floors for commercial use and two additional floors, with 29 units, for residential use. An underground parking lot will also be added. For Bozeman residential and commercial real estate, the building will help alleviate the high demand for downtown businesses and also provide additional space for potential homebuyers. The new 5 story building will join two hotels that have been approved in the nearby area, the Element and the Etha. The City Commission has put a recent focus on fostering more growth in the downtown ...

Bozeman public schools will once again be on the forefronts of national studies, as they have once again been selected to take part national research. Bozeman has already been selected for a highly competitive mental health program/study this year. Great news reached the district, when they found out that once again they had been selected for a prestigious program.     This study will take 72 Bozeman teachers through an intensive program to improve math teaching. The study is being led by researches at Montana State University, George Mason University, and Harvey Mudd College. The survey has been funded by the National Science Foundation, who offered a grant of 1.3 million dollars.     The project will study 3 public school districts—Bozeman, Fairfax County, and Pomona California. Three homeowner associations in Big Sky, the Big Sky Owner’s Association, Spanish Peaks Homeowners’ Association and Town Center Homeowners’ Association, will be making the switch to bear resistant trash cans to help improve the number of bears accidentally straying into Big Sky. Trash tends to be the number one attractor of bears, so Republic Services have tried to fix the issue by releasing their new Kodiac Bear Resistant Trash Cans. (Don’t worry! The trash can is just named Kodiac. It is not specific only to Kodiac bears!) Republic services will go through Big Sky and replace the standard blue bins with the new, black, bear resistant bins (again don't worry! They are the color black and can defend off other species of bears as well). The associations who have made the change will see...

Bozeman Deaconess Hospital has started a 15 million dollar addition that will better address the needs of Bozeman residents while also preparing the next generation of doctors for the area. The hospital broke ground two weeks ago and it plans on the building being 5 stories high and 88,508 square feet. The basic shell of the building should be ready by December of 2015 and then its interior should finish within the following six months. The hospital may not have to fit the entire bill assuming MSU can approve the leasing of a portion of the building for its growing medical programs. Montana State University is awaiting approval to lease space in the new addition for its growing WWAMI doctor-training program. Currently, they are awaiting approval from the Board of Regents to make sure t...

The Bozeman School District has set a new enrollment record of 6,294 students showing the continued growth of Bozeman and its attraction to parents. The record actually fell 51 students short of projected numbers but still had 108 more students than any other year.   Increasing enrollment numbers in both Bozeman elementary and middle schools have driven the overall enrollment numbers to their heights. This year, 2,946 children enrolled in Kindergarten through 5th grade. 1,375 students enrolled in grades six through 8. Both records are all time highs.   Bozeman now has more than 500 kindergarteners enrolled in the district. The two new elementary schools that have been built in the last few years have helped alleviate the growing numbers, but the city may now have to focus on its Midd...

The real estate market is highly influenced by: economic conditions, mortgage conditions, job market conditions, and inventory selection.   Economic Conditions: Great news! The economic vibrancy of the U.S. has been continually growing over the last few months. As the U.S. thrives, there is global unsteadiness. If the global market continues to remain in a weak and vulnerable state, the U.S. economy will similarly weaken with its exports creating negative ripples in the market. (SOURCE)   Mortgage Conditions: With the healing market comes a return of mortgage rates to their averages. This means an end to the historically low mortgage rates we have seen these last five years. We expect rates to continually rise over the months to come.   Job Market/Income: Unfortunately, the economy h...

We’ve all heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” In many instances, this is an understatement, and in others, incorrect. Pictures can be deceptive or simply lacking. They can emphasis a minor point and ignore major factors taking place. They are capable of creating the wrong narrative, so that, yes, you have your thousand words, but they are inaccurate. On any given day, Mike Schlauch, Sally Uhlmann, and Jenny Burrows of Platinum Properties are actively discussing various properties for sale in the Gallatin Valley with both sellers and buyers. We have professionally photographed each of our property listings, always attempting to capture the uniqueness and special qualities of the property, as well as to highlight its location in Montana.
