Whether called building signage, billboards, mural ads, ghost ads, phantom ads or a dozen other names, I love to take walking tours of our great city neighborhoods and enjoy seeing vintage advertising in the form of faded lead paint on brick advertsing on old commercial buildings.  Whereas signs fall into disrepair and are removed, these faded ads on the side of buildings often last for several decades or more and are the last reminder of a commercial business long since shuttered or a product no longer manufactured.  Here is the first installment for this vintage advertising series capturing vintages ads in St. Louis, Missouri:  Orange Smile Soda, 2001 S. 9th Street (Souldard).                                 About the Orange Smile Syrup Company In 1929, Orange Smile Syrup Company open...

  A few years back I listed a glorious old home in the Soulard area of St. Louis.  This home had originally been a doctors residence when it was built back in the 1880's??.  To say that it was a solid house was an understatement .  Legend had it that a tornado had hit it and bounced off.  The foundation on this thing was something like 36 inches wide!Over the years the house had been "remodeled" several times in the various styles du jour that were popular.  These "remodels" included putting in a suspended ceiling, painting the wood work, bricking up windows and a red and the biggest shag carpet that I had ever seen.We got a contract on the home fairly quickly and that freed up the sellers to go look for another home.  After having owned a home that was over 100 years old and huge, they...
