Yesterday, I stopped in to visit Erica Garrison at the Comfort Center and see their new 3,000+ sq. ft. show room located at 1804 North Belt Highway, St Joseph MO. The Comfort Center opened in 1980 as a fireplace store in a 200 sq. ft. building and sold wood stoves.   They now carry a large selection of wood, gas and pellet stoves, inserts and outdoor kitchen islands. Keeping up with the latest trends, in 1986 The Comfort Center added this first inground pool display.  Now with four pools and a gazebo, they have created an outdoor pool park where customers can browse and get a feel for their own backyard look.       The Comfort Center offers above and inground pools, spas, and all your chemicals in just one store. The Comfort Center is known in St Joseph for "building your backyard dream...

Please read this touching story about Matt Ziesel a young man that "Just wants to play football" that became a media sensation overnight.  Matt Ziesel is a freshman at Benton High School in St Joseph, Mo, who loves to play football. Last Friday night displayed what true sportsmanship truly is about in a freshman game against Maryville.  The score was 46-0 which was a lost game for Benton but a winner for sportsmanship, coaches and all the players that night, along with Matt Ziesel who just wants to play football! With 19 seconds left in a meaningless game, Benton Freshman Coach Dan McCamy, approached Maryville's coaches with the idea of allowing Matt to enter the game and score a touchdown.  At first bewiltered by Mr. McCamy's advances the Spoofhounds' staff agreed. The large building at 602 Francis, St Joseph MO, was built in 1918 as a Department Store where Townsend Wyatt and Wall occupied the building until 1983.   Townsend Wyatt and Wall was the lead department store in Downtown St. Joseph, carrying up-scaled clothing, furniture, small appliances and more.  Residents recall the luncheon counter where shoppers and visitors came for a quick lunch and a fountain coke.  The 3rd floor was the mezzanine where shoppers could sit, rest and watch others shopping.  The basement was called the bargain basement where shoppers could save money while still shopping at Townsend Wyatt and Wall.  After the doors closed the building remained empty for many years, occasionally being rented for storage. In the late 1990's the building was purchased by Jeff Smith &...

Last week while showing homes to the Minton family who are relocating to St Joseph,        we took a break and visited Kris & Kate's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shoppe.                    Their twin 5 year old daughters Tara & Cara immediately liked the BIG PINK ICE CREAM CONE BUILDING and had quite a time in selecting which one of the ice cream treats from the menu as their choice.       Kris and her daughter Erica offer a warm welcome to customers at the fun family oriented store.                     Kris & Kate's Ice Cream shoppe offers special parking for Harley's, volleyball nets, sand-pits for the kids along with the-best-selection-of-ice cream-treats to be enjoyed at picnic tables or at the gazebo area while listening to the goldie oldie music.                          Kris & Kate's ...

Today is Gary and my 45th Wedding Anniversary....Where do the years go? The newly weds taking off for their honeymoon, Right? ....              Life was rough for newly weds in 1964, Gary was in his first year as an apprentice pipefitter/plumber with the starting wage at $4.65 an hour and Dona was working at the American Angus Association that payed $200.00 a week.  Young and in Love, "LIFE is GOOD!" The corvette had been picked up from the mechanic shop the day before from having its engine completely overhauled and then hidden in the garage overnight so no one would write on it with SHAVING CREAM, after-all it would ruin the paint..... The Honeymoon plan was to travel to Kansas City for the weekend a 45 mile drive, a nice slow drive would be fine on a newly rebuilt engine,  How Romant...

Over the summer the pool saw thousands of visitors, even for a summer with not so many hot days!                       Aquatic Park is a awesome place for an entire day or even just a few hours.  Many families and companies also take advantage of the park and book their family reunion, birthday parties and company picnics at the pool.  The park is so attractive and above all is an attraction that competes right up with the best water parks in the area.  People love to go because it is close and inexpensive fun!                             The plans for this state of the art facility began early in 2000.  Many surrounding communities had facilities with features like water-slides, lazy rivers and tot play areas and citizens of St. J...

Pony Express Statue...Public Art...St Joseph MO 64501 The Pony Express monument, is located on the corner of Tenth and Frederick streets in downtown               St. Joseph, Missouri. The bronze horse and rider is a heroic statue created by Hermon A. Throughout St. Joseph you can find many stunning sculptures, murals and mosaics as you visit our city, some of the pieces dating back to the early 1900's.  St. Joseph has always been a city rich in history and artistic development.  Looking back on the original building and homes, shows how long art has been a part of the St. Joseph community.  From visual to performing arts the citizens of our town support and embrace the arts culture.                         "Planting America" is a statue that features a mother, father and daughter planting an apple tree, and it is dedicated to the immigrants of St. Joseph.  This monument is a newly added addition to our community, located at Pryor Park just off of Alabama Street in South Side St. Joseph.  This was a project of the South Side Progress...

Walter Cronkite--St Joseph native--Remembered--St Joseph MO   As the nation mourns the passing of anchorman Walter Cronkite, local residents remember the St Joseph native. Walter Cronkite was born in 1916, in St Joseph. His father Walter Cronkite Sr., and grandfather Frederick Cronkite were both dentists in St Joseph.  When Mr. Cronkite was about 6 months old his dentist father joined the military and the family temporarily relocated to Oklahoma.  At the time when Dr. Cronkite was sent overseas, young Walter and his mother moved to Kansas City where her parents lived. Bob Slater, former managing editor of the News-Press and a retired vice president with St Joseph Light and Power, says he may have been the last St Joseph person to have an extended interview with the late Walter Cronkite ...

In 1890 the Krug family, a family of St. Joseph donated land to the City of St. Joseph for park development.  Originally only a portion of the land that is occupied today was given, but over time a total of 162 acres was acquired.  The beginning plans were drawn up before the depression so many things were left undone.  But still today the Krug Family legend lives on as the property serves as the largest park in St. Joseph with many attractions of its own.                  Krug Park is located on the North Side of the St. Joseph Parkway System which is 26 miles long.  The Parkway system is approximately 1500 acres of land that travels throughout St. Joseph consisting of 48 parks and other facilities.  Krug Park is one of the largest still attracting daily visitors.  It ha...

WOW, What an attractive building!  As you enter the doors of the National Military Heritage Museum you soak up more than just the history of our military services.  The large, brick structure speaks for itself when it comes to its beautiful appearance, but visitors can't help but be suspicious of the long-lived history of the building as they walk through and view exhibits.  This building has been undergoing renovation and improvements for the past 20 years, with improvements still being made today.  The Museum is housed in the E.J. Eckel/Harvey Ellis designed brick building that was build in 1890 as the City of St. Joseph's first Police Station.  The National Military Heritage Museum serves as a tribute branches of the armed forces from 1800 to present,to all.   The Museum is located a...

Parents and Grandparents lined the streets today for the 4th of July Kids Parade in St Joseph. The kids rode bikes, scooters, big wheels and several were pulled in wagons or walked, in celebration of the 4th of July.  Many were dressed for the occasion while others carried flags.    One thing is for certain everyone in attendance had a fun morning!
