There are a lot of awesome places to watch fireworks but the best by far in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area is The Liffy Irish Pub. As they call it "St. Paul's Spirited Irish Pub". Located across the street from the Xcel Energy Center and adjoining the Holiday Inn, The Liffy is a roof top pub with great food and great atmosphere. My favorite item on the menu is the Cheese Plate. It is not just two squares of cheese like most places, it is more cheese than you can eat and you may be taking some home. The chutney served with it is incredible. Of course they have pub fare as well as all the Irish classics such as Corn Beef and Cabbage. Plus Guinness and Bottingtons on tap! So back to the Fireworks.....St. Paul's fireworks are shot off on Harriet Island over the Mississippi River. From the ro...

Originally posted on my blog Twin Cities Real Estate Buzz Throughout the Twin Cities, and especially in Minneapolis and Saint Paul which have the highest number of vacant homes, it is bound to happen that uninvited guests might take it upon themselves to utilize your vacant property. Those less fortunate souls, either out of a job or out of a home, decide it is ok to break into a house and live there for a while. They don't care if what they are doing is illegal, and some even justify it as their right. However if any squatters reading this post are planning on doing this in the near future, then you might want to make sure you don't choose a home that is listed with a real estate agent. It happened recently to one of my clients, and is the first time I have run into it personally with ...

How this client did Home Staging correctly in St. Paul, MN. Many of my clients think they should wait to do Home Staging. They think that the best plan will be to put their house on the market, see how it goes, THEN if it doesn't sell or if it gets negative feedback, they'll have it staged. Please, Stage your Home correctly from the beginning! You'll never get back those potential buyers who came through when it was a hot new listing. So, what did my client in St. Paul do correctly? They knew Home Staging was important. They had me come through their home, give them advice on what was needing to be done, changed, and upgraded. They worked hard and did all the necessary improvements. They took down dated wallpaper, updated lighting, repainted, made necessary repairs, and most importantly...

Growing up Irish in Minnesota made March 17th an official holiday! (Okay...I'm only a quarter Irish but on St. Pat's day, whose counting?) From time to time we attended the big parade in downtown St Paul and once even walked under the “Flaherty” banner. But it was much more fun to watch the festivities from the safety of the curb. I think my mom tried to feed us a dinner of home cooked corned beef and cabbage once...not a big success in our house. We didn’t dance, but sang the “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” all day (my Prussian grandmother's favorite song)! It was fun to celebrate our heritage. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day,I wanted to share some fun Minnesota Irish websites. Enjoy! Meet St. Patrick Irish in Minnesota IrishSongs and their lyrics Irish Recipes St. Paul St. Pat's St. Patr...

If you're in the market to buy a fixer-upper home in Saint Paul, there's no need to be afraid of registered vacant buildings - at least not most of them.  There are three categories of registered vacant buildings - Category 1, 2, and 3. Category 1 properties are pretty simple; the new owner simply needs to register or re-register ownership, pay any outstanding fees, and comply with any outstanding orders for legal occupancy.  You probably won't be able to buy a category 3 property.  These properties are the worst of the worst, and the City of Saint Paul is demolishing most of these.  Category 2 properties are the focus of this blog. Category 2 properties are condemned or have multiple housing violations.  If you want to buy one of these properties, you'll need to complete the same re...

The deadline is looming! Not just for the tax credit for first time homebuyer. Anyone interested in buying a home in the 55106 Dayton’s Bluff area, needs to pay attention to the December 31st deadline for this program too! It’s been a few weeks since I had checked the Dayton’s Bluff website for information on the Pohlad Homebuyer Assistance Incentive Program. This is the program that caused so much excitement for buyer’s in the 55106 zip code earlier this year. But this morning when I clicked over I got a very pleasant surprise! The funds are now approved for FHA financing! If you haven’t heard about it yet, this is a great program for homebuyers looking to buy in St. Paul’s 55106 zip code and available through the Pohlad Family Giving Foundation. However, they are not just giving away ...

Are you relocating to Saint Paul or moving to a new neighborhood? Here are some great St Paul Neighborhood Links and other real estate information for St Paul! Sometimes prospective home buyers ask real estate agents to tell them about the ethnic makeup of a neighborhood, where particular religious communities are, what is the family status of the neighboors, or how safe an area is before they purchase a home. Now I love to be helpful but answering these questions directly would result in discrimination and I firmly believe that everyone is just as good as everyone else.  Not to mention that it would violate both state and federal laws.  So I refer them to public resources via internet links.  Here are links for Saint Paul Minnesota that I recently complied for a prospective client.  Th...

Ok, so I would hope people would know by now that one of my biggest pet peeves is real estate photographs. It really drives me crazy with all the terrible photos I see constantly in the MLS database. I can understand terrible photos for $100,000 homes (but even those tilted photos get under my skin), but when it comes to terrible photographed homes priced in the million dollar range...I just don't get it.Homeowners - When you hire real estate agents to sell your home, do the agents even tell you about their marketing plan? Better yet, do you even ask? Do you ask them how they will be photographing the home? Do you ask to see the end result?     Why does this matter? Because photos sell a home. Let me tell you something...agents have NO excuse for not paying for a professionally photogra...

When dryers fail to function properly the problem is usually caused by restricted air flow   St. Paul, MN - Carl Hein owns and operates Dryer Vent Wizard in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He specializes in all dryer exhaust issues.  When clothes dryers fail to function properly the problem is usually due to lint clogged dryer exhaust ducts.  Failure to properly maintain and clean dryer vents is the number one cause of clothes dryer fires; however, there are other causes as well.   Carl Hein recently went on a call when the customer complained that the dryer was making a scraping noise and it wasn't producing heat.  When he looked into the problem he found that the scraping noises were caused by a lack of lubrication due to worn drum bearings.  "The back of the drum was making contact with the he...

6/2/2009 UPDATE: Application is on-line as of today! Buyers that want to take advantage of the up to $8000 in special funds available for the 55106 and 55411 zip codes made available by the Pohlad Family Giving Foundation need to do their homework and plan ahead. As of today, the funding is NOT yet available at the Dayton's Bluff Neighborhood Housing Services of St. Paul (DBNHS). I spoke with a representative of DBNHS last week who said that the funding should be in place any day now but applications cannot be accepted for the program until the funds are received. Once the funds are in place DBNHS will start accepting on-line applications but be advised it will take 30 days to process the application and first time homeowners are required to take a class before the funds are distribute...
