The St. Michael Daze and Knights organizing committee held a wrap-up meeting last night, and there were a lot of congratulations going around. First of all, this was the most successful gathering in years.  And, they have decided to keep the dates in the mid-August range rather than move them as they once considered to nearer the Fourth of July. There were a lot of reasons this festival was more successful than past attempts.  One was  the new inflatable midway, the tents were PACKED each day with the concerts, a business expo and arts and crafts.  The Senior Center alone made $300 from its bingo event.  And, the parade had more than 85 entries and was very well-attended.  People were waving and having a great time.  The traveling circus also welcomed crowds for four shows, and also had...

The Crow River Senior Center is one of my favorite pasttimes.  I love being there, working there, volunteering there.  They have great programs, interesting trips, great speakers, mean card games, and some of the most fascinating people you will ever meet.  Really. And, they often have picnics and get togethers where all ages interact.  They read to the kids, now that school is starting again, too.  Come see us.  Check out the post above to see the activities, the wonderful members of this strong community, and perhaps volunteer yourself.  You will be the winner, I guarantee it!

Call off the hounds.   The medallion for St. Michael's Daze and Knight has been found by a grandmother and granddaughter who don't want any media attention....for now.  But, come Saturday night they will pick up their $1,000 prize in front of the crowd just before the Secion 30 concert.  Thyey only needed four clues before finding it under the traffic signal at the corner of Highway 241 and Fourth Street Northeast. What a great way to kick off the festivities!  There will be a circus ($15 at the gate, $10 in advance and you can pick up those tickets at City Hall or call 862-497-7912.  Children under 14 are admitted free with an adult ticket.) There will also be a petting zoo on Sunday from 2 to 5.  Other events include a softball tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Fireworks at du...

Oh, some good news for a change.  Wright County Sherifff Joe Hagerty presented the 2010 police report for St. Michael to the City Council.  Hagerty pointed out that St. Michael had the lowest Part 1 (most serious crimes per capita in the county.  And that crimes decreased by 20 percent from 2009 to 2010 with no explanation as to why that is happening. (I believe that Neighborhood Watches help).  In 2010 medical calls were the most common service calls with alarms being a close second. Service calls decreased, however, by 4% from 2009 to 2010.  Traffic crashes were down 24% (which is very surprising given all the road construction and weird lanes changes).   There were, however, quite a number of gas drive-offs, which given the economy and some people thinking they can get away with it t...

The Chicago Bears have signed Matt Spaeth, releasing tight end Brandon Manumaleuna.  Great news (kinda) for the locals.  Matt has never forgotten his hometown.  STMA has a lot of new equipment thanks to Matt and the Steelers. And, he sponsors a charity golf outing each summer to benefit the local area.  He is quite a young man.  And, boy, the pride around here shows. You might even see some Vikings fans switching to "Da Bears" this year.  (I doubt it, but they will want to see the games....so sports bars might see some increased patronage).  It is pretty exciting news for St. Michael-Albertville.  Go, Matt!

If there were a house fire, and you had the opportunity to grab three things on your way out to safety, what would they be?  There was a lot of discussion about this at the Senior Center today when I volunteered for the Shining Stars Over 85 luncheon.  We had 40 seniors who got roses and great lunch and some special attention. What a great event, and we had 45 guests to go along with the seniors, too.  This will be a great memory, and I can post the pictures later. Back to the question,   three things???? I have four pets.  Two in the house and two in the garage.  So, first the two in the house and my laptop.  Hopefully, the man of the house gets the dogs out and some money..... What would you do?

For the first time, St. Michael is offering to rent gardening plots* to residents of St. Michael and Albertville.  Gardeners will pay a small season fee to rent a plot from May through mid-October. The garden plots will be located on Frankfort Parkway just East of Naber Avenue in St. Michael, across the street from JATC Technical School.  So, if you have a green or brown thumb, you might want to give this a go for your vegetable gardening needs this year.  You might note that the plots for the year have all been rented, but, put your name on the waiting list, and you might get lucky.  And, maybe they will expand the program for next year!  If the demand has already outpaced the space, they probably will look for additonal space because the City, of course, needs all the income it can ge...

Here is a great opportunity to assist the community. I read the Patch from St. Michael, Minnesota, to get the news of what is occuring in the community at large.  They have a great staff, and I am so grateful that we have an on-line daily paper.  This morning I read about a community event scheduled for this evening called Community U-Knighted.  (The mascot of the high school is the St. Michael-Albertville Knights).  This event is open and free to the public.  It begins at 5:45 with a dinner and the presentation will begin at 6:30.  It will be held in the new City Center.  The focus of the group is to improve race relations within our rapidly growing community.  And, as the Superintendant put it, "When I got here, diversity meant you weren't Catholic."  I can vouch for that!  The evenin...

St. Michael, MN home owners going through financial difficulties due to loss of job, health or other hardship may be eligible to short sale their home. A short sale simply means to sell the home for less than what is owed on the property. If you have multiple loans against the home, a short sale agreement will be needed with all of the lenders. When considering a short sale, you need an expert in negotiating short sales with your lender. Not all real estate agents are trained in handling the complexity of a short sale. As timing is critical in the completion of a short sale, you need to be confident in your real estate agent's abilities. At Edina Realty Buffalo, we have several agents who are certified and trained in negotiating short sales. Please call us before making your decision, w...

Researching short sales in St. Michael, Minnesota today, I was stunned.  There were 36 active listings, 3 temporarily not available for showing, 3 pending, and in the last year, 27 cancelled and 22 expired. Thirty were sold.   Average days on market for the cancelled were 212, and for the expireds, 151.  When you have missed a payment, or sometimes are even just a few days late, the lending institution says you are in default.  A missed payment or two or three hurts your credit rating much more than a short sale or foreclosure.  In fact, you can take a hit on a short sale and recover much more quickly (usually) than with missed mortgage payments.  If you look at the short sale numbers again for St. Michael, it shows a definite trend.  Two-thirds of the listings of the non-active listing...
