By Lynn Geiger   Long-dubbed ‘Traffic City’ by some locals, traffic in Traverse City is no longer viewed as just a summer problem. Planners say the region’s transportation infrastructure was not built to handle anywhere near today’s capacities, regardless of the season. Here’s a quick glance at what local officials and transportation advocates are proposing as fixes and why. Getting Across Town East-west mobility is Traverse City’s biggest traffic problem, according to Garfield Township Supervisor Chuck Korn, and he maintains a Hartman-Hammond bridge over the Boardman River in Garfield Township is still the best solution – even after fi...

August 12, 2013 By Al Parker   Major changes are underway along both East and West arms of Grand Traverse Bay. While visible progress is underway on the Acme Shoreline Park, another waterfront project is quietly moving closer to reality in Greilickville. The plan calls for the development of the township’s M-22 commercial corridor, including the installation of a boulevard, sidewalks and landscaping. The concept is to make the area more pedestrian and traffic-friendly. Parking areas would be connected with a series of small access roads and shared driveways to reduce the number of curb cuts. The project would help connect the businesses along the west side of M-22 with the waterfront amenities on the east side of the busy roadway. A public hearing on the project was held in July and dr...

DDA Eyeing Downtown Traverse City Improvements July 26, 2013 By Beth Milligan   From improving trash collection systems to extending the Boardman River boardwalk to sprucing up crosswalk bumpouts, the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is currently spearheading a number of beautification projects in an effort to enhance the downtown corridor.Taking Out the Trash Locals and tourists alike have complained about unusually high levels of trash in downtown Traverse City this year, citing overflowing bins on Front Street, litter on the beaches and messy public bathrooms at Clinch Park. DDA Interim Executive Director Rob Bacigalupi says increasing numbers of visitors – “generally a good problem to have” – means the DDA must now consider both short-term and long-term solutions ...

By Beth Milligan   Traverse City hotels are capitalizing on a resurgent economy and multiple national accolades by investing in property expansions and pricey renovations. West Bay Beach, a Holiday Inn Resort, is among the latest hospitality properties to undergo a major remodeling. In 2012, ValStone Partners, LLC, a Michigan-based private equity firm, purchased the hotel – which sits in a prime location on West Grand Traverse Bay in downtown Traverse City – and immediately set about overhauling the facility. The recently completed $4.5 million renovation updated every inch of the hotel's 179 rooms, two pools, two restaurants, lobby, meeting space and beachside patio. The makeover earned the hotel a Holiday Inn Resort designation, the first property outside of the east or west coasts t...
