We are still up and down in temperatures here in Michigan, but the tulips are finally starting to become more prominent and emerge from the ground.  To me this is the sure sign that spring is really here.  Winter has snapped back a few days this week with icy wind and cold that has robbed us again of those warm walks in the park.  Hoping the tulips rising from the ground will hold the sun a little closer and warm things up.  Here are a few I photographed at the Meijer Gardens.

Want to know what daily life is like in the Northern Mid-West? Particularily in winter?  Well Mother Nature bestows random work upon you without consulting your schedule, and shoveling snow becomes a routine part of life.  Here is my driveway taken just 2 days ago after a recent shoveling project dealt to my area by Ms Nature. What is interesting as the snow piles up higher and higher is that the effort to toss the next shovel full over the hill becomes more challenging and exhausting.  Some places in town such as shopping malls and commercial streets have a hard time finding places to put the snow, as we have had very little melting in over 6 weeks.   Not all is terrible though.  I looked at the weather channel this morning and does indicate we might see a day or two in the 40's in a w...

I work at home in my office most of the time.  My dog Blue is my constant companion.  He comes and goes around the house, but his favorite spot to return to is at my feet under my desk. Sometimes I lose track of him, and think that he is not there... and then I move my feet to find out quite the opposite.  He sometimes has a way of slipping in without drawing my attention. He is my traveling friend too, and he goes with me on a lot of real estate appointments for home showings, etc.  My wife and I rescued him from a shelter in June of 2013, and I cannot imagine life without him now.

Yesterday I had to venture onto some slippery back road, and even got mired in a icy area at one point and had to get out of the car and knock the ice off my tires to be able to move.  Yesterday, however, the skies were blue despite the cold.   Today however, we are in another blizzard here in Southwest Michigan.  Yay! Just what we needed! I was supposed to drive to a state offered continuing education class in Kalamazoo today.  I was really looking forward to it, but after looking outside and hearing the travel reports from others, I am cancelling.  Therefore I decided to sit here and blog for a little while. Here is are photos of what it looks like outside my window right now.  The wind is whipping around and the snow is a classic 'Lake effect snow' coming out of Lake Michigan.  It is...

I have spoken to many homeowners in recent years who are of the mind that they should pull their home from to market during the winter months of December through March.  Many wait until Spring and throw their house into the listing pool with so many other sellers.   It makes sense in a way. With the weather we have had in the Midwest and Northeast this season in December, January and entering into February. Who wants the inconvenience of having a showing on your home and then you have to step out for another Realtor in nasty weather? Also the boots and snow in the house! Yuck! Who wants to have to shovel the walkway on short notice to be ready for a showing?  It is no fun. Bleeehh! However, the biggest thing most sellers fail to realize is that because so many people are of similar mind...

In the wake of the Super Bowl where the Seattle Seahawks defeated Denver Broncos 43-8, there are some interesting lessons one can learn by examining what happened.  Many watchers of the big game were perhaps in shock to see Peyton Manning and the Broncos perform so poorly and be beaten so resoundingly.  What happened? The best summary of this game would be to say it was the change of times and playing style that created the outcome.   The playing style of the traditional quarterbacks in the NFL were to remain in the pocket, and although they would move around and avoid trouble, in this style of play they throw from that position. Quarterbacks in the game that currently use this style are Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and even Eli Manning. They are all brilliant powerful passers,...

This morning when I got up I checked the weather like I do every morning.  This morning was another cold one.  I thought I would share with everyone what an almost surreal weather report looks like on my acuweather app on my iPad.   It is kind of a shock to the system to just see -10 degrees on the screen before you even venture outside to see what it feels like.  Another app said it was -13. We have had a few colder days than this in January 2014, but what is funny is I seem to find myself become desensitized to the whole thing now.  As I mentioned above, it is kind of like that surreal feeling a boxer must get after receiving one too many punches.  The icy fingers of the polar vortex continues...

Well it has taken me a number of years on ActiveRain to finally reach 300,000 points but I have finally reached it with this blog post.  I owe so much to AR, as it introduced me to the world of blogging.  I now have many different blogs, some I write to more frequently than others, but my favorite has always been my AR blog. The AR community is such an incredible resource for everything related to our profession.  Our blogs give us a chance to share with others our wisdom and experience, and likewise learn the same from others.  It also offers a chance to share our frustrations, woes and our successes.  This is a very special group to belong to.   There have been times when I have not written on my blog as often as I would have liked. However, it is always good to see so many of the peo...

This morning I got up and there was blowing snow and wind outside.  It was blizzardy conditions. My wife and I made some coffee and enoyed out morning conversation.  We looked up at one point, and saw the snow had stopped and the sky had turned blue.  When we ran out of coffee, it began to snow again.  We decided right then to brew another pot, and like a miracle, the snow abated again and we saw blue sky.   So our theory on this Saturday morning is that everyone in the Northern and Northeast U.S. should brew some coffee simulatiously and enjoy a good cup of Joe.  It could be the trick was to use honey and cinnamon in the coffee along with some cream, so keep that in mind.   If we all brew and drink coffee at the same time, then the snow will leave and perhaps we will even have an early...

Right now outside there is -4 degree temps, and a -23 degree wind chill.  The wind is really what goes down to the bone and grabs you with that icy hand of winter. My dog Blue is a rescue dog.  My wife and I brought him into our lives last June when we rescued him from  shelter in Indiana.  He has a tendency to always want to lay touching you when he naps.  I suppose he does not want to sleep and not know if I walk away.  It is conforting to him to have me or my wife near him. Some nights when it is real cold, I take off my shoes and slide my feet under him and he is my puppy foot warmer.  The other night I looked down and he was really zonked out and I took this photo.  Somehow the winter chill does not seem so bad when you have moments like these in your life.

This January has been such a cold one, I have noticed my own personal desire to stay indoors and limit my time out in the elements whenever possible.  This condition also creates a sort of cabin fever which I am not fond of.  I find myself spending time blogging and writing when I am not working on real estate to stay off the sensation of cabin fever that haunts me. My dog occasionally whines with boredom, as he would prefer that I go outside and run around with him in the cold and snow.  After all he has fur, and does not seem to be as turned off by these conditions.  Perhaps I need to adopt more of his philosophy on this, but I think not. I just read that tonight our conditions are going to drop to a -20 degree wind chill and there is a winter advisory to avoid contact with the skin a...

I grew up in sunny Arizona.  I always remember hearing stories from the Northerners who came to Arizona for the winter, and how cold it was up where they were from.  As a kid, I always longed to see snow having grown up in the Valley of the Sun.   However, I never dreamed that I would be on the reverse end of such a story.  I never thought I would be one to live in the cold north country.  Now after many years have past, and I look back on my childhood in Arizona, I wonder how I arrived in Michigan?   It certainly was a long road, and there were many turns.  During Christmas this past December I called my father in Arizona and was chatting with him about the weather, and he stopped at one point and said "What ever possessed you to move to Michigan?" My dad always has a way of making me ...

I just released my newest book entitled: Land Contract Homes: The Top 10 Mistakes Home Buyers Make... And How to Avoid Them!  It is currently available as an eBook on Amazon, and the print edition will be available sometime next week.  I am waiting on the final proof to review before I make the paperback available.  The print edition will be available on Amazon and other retailers by the end of January, or early February.  If you would like to order the eBook now, click here. This book covers the subject of seller financing and addresses the top ten mistakes home buyers make when choosing a land contract as a means to purchase a home. It continues to expand upon my other other book 'Understanding Land Contract Homes: In Pursuit of the American Dream' which I released in 2012, and answer...

Is it possible to file a restraining order on Mother Nature?  How is this enforced if I get one? Has anyone ever tried to do this? Who do you talk to about this?  Boy, do I need one. Not only did we get a gazillion pounds of unsolicited snow dumped on our yard, I had to shovel it out of my driveway over and over again the last few days!  I am a Realtor, Author and a photographer: not a snow shoveler!  Take your cloud poop elsewhere! Next, as some sort of wicked retaliation to my groans and complaints she lowered the thermastat to sub-freezing levels making the roads all slippery and my nose hairs are now frozen daily.  I had to stop for gas this morning on the way to work, and my beard and mustache had icicles on them when I was done. What is up with that?  I do not deserve this treatme...

My dog blue is a Australian Cattle Dog (AKA Blue Heeler) mix.  My wife and I rescued him in June, and he has become such an integral part of my life.  The last few nights with all the snow outside I have been working a lot at home in my office.  He sometimes gets bored and jumps on my shoulder and sticks his nose in my face to see what I am doing and just to say hello.   Last night I snapped a few photos of some of these moments. Having a dog around is new for me, as I have not had one since I was a kid. My life was always too busy, or so I thought.  Now I cannot imagine a day without him.   In fact, when I am away and have to leave him at home, I find myself thinking about my buddy and what I have to do to get back to him sooner.  He is such a special friend, even when he is being a pe...
