Given the way most communities work, the location of a home dictates the local school district. The quality of the school district can have a direct impact on the value of your home. Even if you don’t have kids or don’t have to plan kids, the quality of the local schools can positively or negatively effect your home’s value. Buyers tend to prefer homes in good school districts, either because they have school-aged children, or they are thinking of resale value down the line. So how do you know if schools in Silver Spring make the grade? What signs point towards an improving or declining school district? Here are a five things you’ll want to consider: 1. Test scores. It’s a basic measurement of student performance and educator effectiveness. Look at the performance historically for an id...

I often work with clients who find themselves outgrowing their home. Sometimes these are couples who have welcomed their first child into the world, and other times it’s the simple accumulation of “stuff” over time which has crowded their house.   While I’m always glad to help homeowners make the “upgrade” to a bigger home (and now is a pretty good time to buy a lot of house for comparatively little money), I’m also interested in helping them make the most of the home they have today. Given the amount of time we spend in our homes, it makes sense to work towards a clutter-free, organized, peaceful environment.   Sometimes I work with clients who find the things they own have ended up “owning them.” What we own and what we actually use are often very different, and what we don’t use can ...

The tradition is that the Tuesday before Lent is a time to indulge or Fatten up before tightening belts and giving up things for Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday.  It is the Fat Tuesday associated with Mardi Gras and it is the Shrove Tuesday associated with Pancake Suppers or Pancake Day.This Tuesday February 13th is also Paczki Day, a Polish tradition of making and eating Paczki the day before Lent starts. The best place to get Paczki in Silver Spring, is at the Woodmoor Bakery/Pastry Shop in the Woodmoor Shopping Center at Four Corners.  They make the most divine, decadent Paczki anywhere in the area.  They are the filled, rolled in powdered sugar type paczki and they are GOOD.It is best to get there early - They start making them a few weeks before Paczki Day, so they should have ...

The plans for the big vacant lot on the corner of Brunett Avenue and University Blvd in the South 4 Corners Neighborhood of Silver Spring have CHANGED... .AGAIN!  The 3/4 acre lot with house was purchased in 2005 by a Builder.  The sprawling old 1940's era house on the lot was a Dentist's Office for over 40 years.  The house was razed in 2007 to make way for 6 new Luxury Homes.  The homes that were planned were HUGE with huge prices to go with them, in the upper $600,000's to 800,000's.Then came the market downturn of 2008 and plans for these homes had to be scraped. The lot has remained vacant since 2007 and the Builder has been trying to get a zoning exception for a Day Care Center.  Plans for a Day Care Center were opposed by the neighborhood residents.  The County, the Residents and ...

I am pleased and excited that Tuesday Morning Home Goods Store is opening in Silver Spring!  I've shopped at Tuesday Morning before.  It is a great store for gifts, things for your home and for Staging Houses for Sale.  It is a lot like Linen's and Things or Bed Bath and Beyond, but much less expensive! Now Silver Springers, including me, will not have to schlep to Rockville or Bowie to shop at this amazing discount home goods store.  The store is ready and opens on Tuesday (of course), that's tommorow, November 6th, 2007! This store will open in the building that SAM KUGLER's House of Linens Store used to occupy at the corner of University Boulevard and Colesville Road (RT 29).By the way, SAM KUGLER is alive and well.  He moved further out Route 29 past White Oak to the Tech Road Busine...
