Sharpsburg is a small town in Washington County, Maryland, approximately 13 miles south of Hagerstown, 18 miles West of Frederick and a short distance from Shepherdstown, West Virginia just over the Potomac River.  The town was named after Horatio Sharpe, colonial governor. Approximately 700 people live in Sharpsburg.During the American Civil War, the Battle of Antietam was fought September 17, 1862, on what is now Antietam National Battlefield. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with almost 23,000 casualties. This victory was a turning point of the war because it stopped the Confederacy from advancing and winning an important battle on Northern soil.
