When my 37 year old son was about two, I accompanied a high school classmate to the Washington Antique Show in search of furniture and furnishings for the historic Clara Barton House in Glen Echo, Maryland.  It was 1980 and the National Park Service was refurbishing Clara Barton's home in Glen Echo, which had also served as the headquarters of the American Red Cross at the turn of the 20th century.  Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, lived at this house in Glen Echo, just outside Washington, DC from 1897 until her death in 1912.  My friend was a National Park Service curator working on the opening of the new museum, and she had a list of items which she was trying to buy at the antique show, based on photographs and the inventory of items in the house while Clara Barto...

Clara Barton was a pretty amazing woman.  She had a series of careers from school teacher to patent clerk.  When the Civil War broke out, she worked to help the war efforts, providing services for soldiers who'd lost their luggage, then getting medical supplies to where they were needed.  She worked as a nurse until the end of the war, then set up an office to help in the search for men who were missing in action. After the Civil War, she moved to Europe to hone her skill during the Franco Prussian War, and she worked for the Red Cross.  When she returned home, she worked to get the Untied States to sign the Geneva Convention, which covers the way countries treat prisoners of war.  In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross, which is what we mostly remember her for.  She helped with fa...

What Does a Bridge Have to Do With Tranquility? This bridge is part of the Glen Echo Park in Maryland. The park is a very popular place for kids and adults, offering children theaters, carousel, art classes, dancing, and many more great activities for all ages. If you are a first time visitor to the park, this scene will probably surprise you. The large parking lot in front of the park does not hold much promise for what you experience next. But as you approach the bridge on this photo, the scenery is suddenly transformed from the asphalt field to this amazing display of nature. As you walk across this bridge to get to the park, the nature pulls you in and the feeling of tranquility takes over.

Friday Fotos  - Art Deco Pop Corn Stand Becomes an Art Gallery I took this photo while visiting one of the most charming parks in my area, Glen Echo Park in Maryland. The park was established in 1890s as an amusement park, and this building originally served as a refreshment stand.  Today, the Pop Corn building serves as a gallery for art exhibits. The park is home to many art galleries and studios for local artists.

Trolley Trestle Speaks of the Past   There is a national park in Glen Echo, MD, a popular amusement park and a center for arts, built in 1891. It is one of the most enchanting places for kids and adults to visit (for more photos, click here). During my last trip to the park, I took a photo of this old trolley bridge, located close to the park's entrance. This old trestle supported the Glen Echo trolley, the main mode of transportation for visitors to the park, during the early park years.

DC is filled with lots of little neighborhoods and communities, both in the city and outside. Like other parts of America, the DC metro area reflect the history of our country as it has evolved over the last 200 plus years. Washington is more than the White House and whichever administration is here. One of my favorite communities is Glen Echo, a very small town of 125 houses in Montgomery County just over the District line along the Potomac river.  Glen Echo began in 1889 when two brothers, Edward and Edwin Baltzley, bought land along the Potomac River from the Walhonding Road area to Cabin John Creek and named it Glen Echo on the Potomac. They imagined stone castles on this property and nicknamed it  "The Washington Rhine."  They opened five quarries to provide the stone for the castle...
