What is a Wildlife Tree?  Decorate a tree of your own with hand made edible ornaments that will be enjoyed by your feathered and furry friends and you will have a Wildlife Tree.  It is fun to see the birds and animals as they eat the ornaments and it will provide opportunities for some photographs that you will want to share. Emerald is the Pantone Color of the Year for 2013 We will be seeing a lot of Emerald Green in 2013, according to The Wall Street Journal in the feature article A Year in the Emerald City. Pantone, the global authority on color, has announced that Pantone 17-5641 Emerald is the Color of the Year for 2013.  Pantone says that Emerald "enhances our sense of well-being" and promotes "balance and harmony".  For many of us, we just like the color selection. Home owners will be using Emerald Green paint for accent walls and the ladies will be wearing fashions that feature the color.  Maybe the use of the color of a four-leaf clover will also bring great luck. Consumers will be shopping to replace outmoded things in such colors as tangerine tango, the Pantone color of the year for 2012. JCP will...

Gaithersburg Snow Removal and Crow Season A special time of the year is upon us!  No, not that season!  Crow season!  As you may have noticed, our area becomes very popular with crows in the fall and winter.  Omnivorous creatures just as comfortable eating leftovers as they are eating grains, crows are often lured by the easy meals they find at the curb on trash day.  Smarter than you might expect, crows can easily access food scraps in simple plastic trash bags.  On a windy day, their scavenging can go from simple inconvenience to unsanitary and downright disgusting as household garbage gets scattered up and down the streets by the birds and the elements.  Who hasn’t had to pick scraps of litter from their yard and wondered who could be so rude and careless?  The answer could very well...

Savings and Retirement The prevailing wisdom today is that one should work as long as possible--for instance until ages 65-70. In fact, "just 8% of workers expect to retire before age 60, down from 17% in 2007," according to Eleanor Laise of Kiplinger's magazine (September 2012, p. 57), citing a statistic from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI). The theory is that it is necessary, and in this way an individual will have plenty of time to accrue the necessary savings needed for retirement. While this is a laudable goal, it can lull someone into a false sense of security. It can also create the impression that there is an unlimited amount of time with which to save for retirement, so that the individual doesn't begin saving as soon as they should. Why not buy that bigger house...

Focus on your ten day goals in the time before Christmas    Ken Crowley, one of the broker/owners of RE/MAX Realty Group constantly reminds the real estate professionals in our office to focus on their goals. Right now, all of us need to be sticking to our 10 day short range goals. These are targets that we will be able to complete over the next two weeks before the Christmas holiday. If you feel stuck, establish a list of your short term goals and take action.  We need to have a positive momentum to carry us through this month. Some of the short range goals to keep us accountable are items like writing three personal notes a day, adding five new contacts to our database each day or doing two hours of lead generation each day.  Goal help us find balance and direction in life. Focus! Oh,...

Holiday Craft Mart at the First Baptist Church, Gaithersburg  Dolores and I enjoyed seeing friends and family at the 2012 Annual Holiday Craft Mart at the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg.   Last year, Dolores and I enjoyed the Holiday Craft Mart. The display by Something Earthy Pottery Studio, in Laytonsville, MD was outstanding and Dolores selected two items to purchase and we decided to visit the studio.  Which of the items did Dolores select?  What influences your purchases during this holiday season? Normally, I would have expected Dolores to be attracted by the hand crafted jewelry which was made by the lady in the photograph, Teresa Kimery.  The young man in the picture is Tony Phillips, the son of Linda Phillips, the potter and the owner of Something Earthy Pottery Studio. Follow Your Passion Dolores and I enjoyed talking with our friend Carolyn Lancaster at the 2012 Annual Holiday Craft Mart at the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  On this Saturday last year, Dolores and I attended the 2011 Annual Holiday Gift Mart at the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This is a large show and much local talent is on display.  We were delighted to see Burt Lancaster and his wife Carolyn at one of the exhibits.  Burt is a long time real estate professional at RE/MAX Realty Group.  Carolyn makes holiday wreaths and decorations that they sell at local craft events. Carolyn explained that she has been making decorations for years for family members.  They encouraged her to make her talents available to the public and a new small business was b...

6 Steps for a More Effective Social Media Strategy   The way to get more out of your social media presence is to approach it in a systematic way. Here are the steps to take to put together a more effective social media strategy for the coming year. 1. Write down your business goals for 2013. Number of new prospects. Number of new clients/customers. Gross sales. Net profit.2. Write down the strategies you'll use to meet those goals. Do you need to increase your awareness to your target audience? Do you need to educate your target about their needs and how you meet them? Do you need to entice prospects with offers? Do you need to find marketing partners whose products or services complement yours--and vice versa? 3. Match your strategies and goals to the strengths of social media. For pro...

Christmas at Mount Vernon:  Now is the time to plan your visit! Dolores and I always enjoy visits to Mount Vernon. The holiday season is a great time to see the Mansion and the Christmas decorations. Allow several hours for your visit to be able to have lunch and spend time in the large museum. It is not as crowded during week days.  We like to go early, tour the Mansion, and then enjoy a nice lunch before visiting the Museum. If you live in the area, we suggest an annual pass.  By the way, Mount Vernon is a very special place to take your holiday guests for an experience that will create fond memories. "Mount Vernon is joyfully decking the halls for Christmas at Mount Vernon, a special daytime program offered through January. Themed decorations (including 12 Christmas trees), historica...
