There aren't many holidays that have more meaning than Veteran's Day.  Most of us know and love a veteran, and we're usually “wowed” to hear his or her stories of service.  I guess that must be true of many business owners, too, because so many of them are reaching out to honor veterans on November 11 this year. Here are some special events you may want to share with veterans in your life who may not have heard about them: Fee Free Day at National ParksTo honor America's service men and women, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that areas managed by the department will not charge entrance fees on Thursday, November 11, 2010.   RESTAURANTSApplebeesApplebee’s is giving a free entree to veterans and active duty military on Veteran’s Day – November 11.Golden CorralVeterans c...

If you’re ready to jump into the foreclosure market, Crofton, MD might be a good place to explore. While Crofton doesn’t have a glut of foreclosures, it isn’t immune either. Today, November 7, 2010, there are 11 foreclosed properties for a discriminating buyer to choose from. Statistically, less than 10% of all homes sold this year in Crofton, MD have been foreclosures. Contrast that to Bowie, MD, where over 33% of all homes sold this year were in the foreclosure category. Today, there are 11 Crofton MD homes for sale that have been foreclosed on by a bank. I’m aware of a couple more that have been taken off the market while foreclosure paperwork is verified. This is due to the recent problems that have been reported about the process some banks have used to foreclose on properties. El...

Foreclosures have been around real estate for a long time. The only difference now is the number of foreclosures that seem to be crowding many areas. Crofton, MD isn’t immune to foreclosures, but it hasn’t been a significant component in our real estate market. Less than 10% of all homes sold this year in Crofton, MD have been foreclosures. Contrast that to Bowie, MD, where aver 33% of all homes sold this year were in the foreclosure category. Today, there are 12 Crofton MD homes for sale that are foreclosures. I’m aware of a couple more that have been taken off the market while foreclosure paperwork is verified. Twelve foreclosures is actually pretty high for the Crofton, MD real estate market which usually has about half that amount. Purchasing a Crofton, MD foreclosure is only sli...

TRICK-OR-TREATING IN CROFTON, MARYLAND   Keep the REAL spooks out of your children's Halloween night by taking these precautions when they go trick-or-treating in Crofton MD (or anywhere): 1.  Accompany children when they go trick-or-treating - If they're a little older, stand back so you're not "lurking", but don't let a pedophile take advantage of this great opportunity to troll for vulnerable kids.  And never let them enter a stranger's house!Remember, adolescents are not too old to be at risk on Halloween or at any other time. (You might want to check the Maryland Sex Offender Registry, and avoid those residences when you take your children trick-or-treating.)   2.  Encourage children to go trick-or-treating in small groups.  If the group is too large, you might lose count if one is...

Fall is the season for homecoming games in college football, and this is THE big weekend for football fans living in Crofton MD.  The Terps kick-off against Wake Forest in College Park at 3:30 p.m. while the Mids clash with Duke in Annapolis at the same time.   The Naval Academy has a pretty good football team this year, and we're hoping the Mids will win their homecoming game against the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday.  Yes, we're Navy fans, but we're also season ticket holders for the Maryland Terps; to be a Maryland fan means we're always for ANYBODY but Duke!  Navy has won four of their last five matchups with Duke, so the odds are on their side. Crofton residents attending their first Navy football game can expect the Brigade of Midshipmen to parade onto the field at 3:16 p.m., after...

Crofton residents looking for something fun to do this weekend can attend a performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in nearby Baltimore.  This weekend only, as part of Free Fall Baltimore, your tickets will be HALF PRICE. Many of us hear the name "William Shakespeare" and find ourselves instantly transported back in time to some boring school assignments during our youth... and we cringe.  The best possible cure for this is to see a live performance, and there's never been a better opportunity than this weekend at the Spotlighters Theatre in Baltimore.  Twelfth Night, also known as What You Will, is a Mainstage Production running through November 14, but tickets are half-price only for performances tonight, tomorrow and Sunday.  This is a story of mistaken identity and unrequited lo...

Some people feel that in the current real estate market, you can *steal* a home if it is a short sale or foreclosure.  Unfortunately, that's not the case here in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.  Prices have come down here since the height of the market, 2006/2007.  In fact, they have come down quite a bit, about 20% in many neighborhoods.  You'll see when you start looking for homes that there are some foreclosures and short sales that are listed in the multiple list system, along with regular sales.  Many times they are listed for less than regular sales, as an incentive to put an offer in. With a short sale, the seller is asking the bank to accept less than what is owed. Sometimes the bank will take considerably less, sometimes they refuse the short sale.  The bank and their representa...

Join your neighbors at Crofton Library on Saturday, October 23, for a day of beautification.  Wear your work clothes, bring your garden gloves and tools, and come prepared to weed, plant daffodil bulbs provided by Crofton Village Garden Club, spread mulch, and rake leaves.  Arrive at 9, and you'll be on your way home by noon. You've probably noticed how the grounds at Crofton Library have been less attractive lately than in the past.  That's because county budget cuts have eliminated staff who would have maintained the grounds.  But we don't have to settle for “ugly” in Crofton, when there are so many people and organizations willing to help. Of course you can just show up on Saturday, but it would be helpful if you sign up at the Library Information Desk, call (410)222–7915, or email s...
