Last evening we did something unusual for us - went to see a play. We're more a symphony concert couple, but Phil saw a write-up and it sounded interesting, so we decided to check it out. Short review: Fantastic! If you are in the Baltimore area, make it a point to see Wittenberg at Rep Stage in Columbia at Howard Community College. Four characters - one a real historical figure, the other three strictly fictional but known to us all. Martin Luther, Dr. Faustus, Hamlet, and the Eternal Feminine all at the University of Wittenberg in Germany, 1517. Sounds kind of heavy, doesn't it? Not at all! The four actors were great, especially Seth Reichgott who played Dr. John Faustus, and Michael Stebbins who played Rev. Martin Luther. Intelligent dialog with clever references to lines from Hamlet...

Last year I was pretty upset about what was going on behind my Columbia, MD townhouse. It was necessary, I knew, but I was afraid that I would not see some small friends again. There had been a little stream that ran between houses, and the county determined it needed enclosing to direct runoff better. So for weeks it seemed there were large, noisy beasts galumphing along the stream, digging a trench, installing enormous concrete pipe, and then covering it all over. That was fine. What wasn't fine was the removal of dense bushes and some trees that had lined the stream. They had to go for the work to proceed, but I knew that those same bushes were home to a couple of groundhogs, the neighborhood rabbit we named "Scamp", and the trees gave cover to cardinals, blue jays, and especially to...

It's almost time...  Mark it now on your calendars...  Sunday, June 13th at 1:00 pm is Columbia's LakeFest Sixth Annual Boat Float!  If you haven't seen a Boat Float yet, in downtown Columbia, now is the time; just remember sunscreen if the sun's out.  Last year, it was hot and sunny, but SO much fun to watch the boaters try 1) to get in their boats and float, 2) actually move their boats around the course, and 3) finish the course!  Woo hoo hoo! Here is the activity schedule for that weekend, so get your calendars out: June 12 - 14: LakeFest Celebration · Friday, June 12: 5:00 - 11:00 visual arts activities and performances at Columbia Town Center lakefront · Saturday, June 13: 11:00 - 11:00 kicks off with the 6th Annual Kinetic Art Parade along Little Patuxent Parkway, followed by a d...

Thre's an informative new website available for Maryland:  The Maryland State Department of Education has put together a very comprehensive website, allowing the public to search for the licensing inspection records of all the child care providers in the State:  msdecompliancereports.org  Furthermore, you can search by the provider, or the address, the county, or the type of childcare, depending on what information you have starting out.  This could also be used just to get a listing of an area's providers, with all their contact information and license #, thus ensuring they 1) are licensed, and 2) have passed the most recent inspection, and 3) are in the area you're considering for your child(ren). For instance, when I search Howard County, and then Columbia, for a Licensed Child Care ...

I live in suburbia, which I'm very happy with.  Small lot, good neighbors close by, cul-de-sac living to cut down on the drive through traffic, excellent schools, town planned by Rouse.  Community amenities galore. Here's one of the really nice things about the Columbia MD lifestyle - the pathways.  Just down at the end of the street, the path, the trees, the green space - and today - the snow! And of course, the lovely dog that got me out into the snow, rather than admiring it through the windows while I was working on my computer! Best regards,

The grounds of the Howard County Community College will come alive this weekend with the 21st Annual Columbia Classic Grand Prix. Even if you are not an equestrian inclined person it is difficult to not admire the elegance of this event as majestic horses and Olympic-caliber riders bring the highest levels of show jumping competition to the heart of Maryland. It's a terrific spectator sport. "Ooh and ahh" as the competitors race around the course to beat the clock and avoid knocking into the jumps. There are pony rides, demonstrations, exhibits and food. A highlight of the day is the grand raffle for the MERCEDES BENZ. Only $100 per ticket. This event is the college's major fundraiser and benefits the HCC Educational Foundation, which provides financial assistance to HCC students seekin...

COLUMBIA MARYLAND REAL ESTATE IS UNIQUE FOR THIS AREA OF MARYLAND.  A planned community where no benefit for the home owners was overlooked.  Started in the 1960s, Columbia is a community of 10 "Villages", each with it's own community amenities and style.  One feature about Columbia that was planned throughout is the planned undeveloped areas, set aside for nature preserves, wooded acres and entertainment for residents and guests.                                                               Maryland State Flower - The Black Eyed Susan VILLAGE OF HARPER'S CHOICE If you like Contemporary architecture, you'll love many of the homes in Villages of Harper's Choice.   When I first moved to the Kings Contrivance village of Columbia, there was a grocery store in the village center that was convenient but old and fairly depressing. It was replaced in short order by a Safeway that was better, but not much. I always found their store arrangement puzzling; aisles marked "Breakfast" and "Dinner" didn't actually tell me what I would find there. And what was plastic wrap doing in the "Dinner" aisle anyway? The worst part was that it never seemed quite as clean as it might be, and some genius had ordained that there should be music aimed at 20-somethings played loud enough to make it hard to concentrate when I was reading a nutrition label. The best I could say for the store was that it was convenient, but that wasn't enough to keep me as a customer. I chose...
