FREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES! FREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES! in Catonsville, MD I love facebook.  It allows me to find out about the wonderful things that my fellow Woodlawn High School graduates are doing to help our community.  I saw a post yesterday from Cheryl Davis-Robinson regarding an event her American Legion is involved in.  As an American Legion Auxiliary member, Cheryl has been doing a back-to-school supply event for the last 5 years. School supplies are expensive, the school supply list can be daunting.  One family I spoke to totaled up their supplies and they averaged out to over $70 per child. That didn't even cover clothes, shoes, lunch bags.  For unemployed, under-employed and homeless that could mean that their child has nothing to start the school year, or the family goes without food....

5 years ago during the wee hours of a warm August night I stopped working for a just a few hours to give birth to the little love of my life. (Within a few hours after my c-section, loopy on Pitocin I did take a call from an appraiser though- not sure what I said to him!) It seems like just a blink of an eye from that day to this: no more expensive cans of formula cluttering up my kitchen shelves, diapers are a distant memory, a solid nights sleep is normal, baby gates and child locks have been removed and now Kindergarten looms on the horizon.  What does every newly independent 5 year old Birthday boy want to do to start off his big day?GO TO McDONALDS FOR BREAKFAST OF COURSE.We jogged and walked down Frederick Road in Catonsville to the local "Mickey D's".  It was the best breakfast I...

If you are relocating to the Central Maryland area you will become aware that homes prices are dictated by the school districts that service those particular jurisdictions. Although redistricting does occur, many buyers are very adamant about certain areas that they will consider because of the school performances and achievements. Catonsville is no different. The current Real Estate Market in Catonsville High School district of Catonsville, Maryland is red hot. This is not the heat that causes me to come to that conclusion, but the severe lack of inventory. Distressed homes in Catonsville (Catonsville High School district) are not as prevalent as in many other areas in the Central Maryland area.   All the current DETACHED homes in Catonsville. All the current Townhouse and Condo homes in...

A small business in Catonsville that is a pleasure to drive past in the morning is "THE FAMILY AFFAIR" Produce and Garden Center. Located on Frederick Road between Catonsville, Oella and Ellicott City, it's usually a full blaze of color for most of the year. Hanging baskets and seasonal plants adorn the front of the roadside store.Inside the store smells delicious. The aromas of the locally grown fresh produce permeates the air. The selection is not abundant, but is certainly tasty. There are also some crafty items too.The staff are always eager to let you sample the fruit. It's not unusual that I walk out with some items that I did not originally plan to purchase. The staff are always pleasant, helpful and sincerely thank you for stopping by.This has always been my destination for the y...

I just wrote a post yesterday about the "Catonsville Chair Fixation" and happened to mention that I had not see the first chair on the parade route yet. This morning I was up and on the way to work by 7.25am driving down Frederick Road in Catonsville. Lo and behold  I witnessed the first chairs of the season sitting on the curb. IT'S ONLY JUNE 26TH!!!!!!!!!! All photos were taken and are the property of Ellie McIntire. All Rights Reserved. Catonsville, MD knows how to celebrate "Independence Day" It's a well known fact in the Metro Baltimore area that Catonsville is the 4th of July destination. Residents, myself included, look forward to the festivities in the 'ville! The parade and the  fireworks are spectacular, but they do cost money. Fundraising for the event is a huge task taken on by many committee members as a labor of love for the community. One of the quirky details leading up to the event is the chairs that start to show up on the parade route late June in preparation for the events. As of June 25th I still have not yet seen the first chair of the season. This year a clever idea to raise much needed funds was a "Show us your Chair" contest. For $1.00 per vote from June 13th till 5pm on July 1st you can vote on the...

Residential Home Resale Statistics for Catonsville, MD - May 2011     May saw a pretty good month for Catonsville - home sales increased by more than $5 million compared to April, and were virtually identical when compared to last year. This is especially impressive considering the fact that Baltimore County as a whole saw a steep decline from May 2010. The average days on the market saw a great improvement as well. At 79 days, it's about 30% better than April's 110 and last years 112. This was a very strong month for Catonsville.  21228 --- If you are planning to move to the Central Maryland area and you want a BUYERS AGENT that really knows the area and all that it has to offer, I can help. What is happening in Catonsville, Md this weekend? "Frederick Road Fridays" is Back! What a great way to start the weekend. From June 17th till September 2nd on Friday evenings you can take a stroll down Frederick Rd to Egges Lane (right beside the fire station) and enjoy a wide range of local music for free. This season starts with 5 Oaks. This once little event, that started a few years back has now become a local Summer favorite. Bring your chair and the family and enjoy the evening. Come out and meet all your neighbors doing the same thing.Jennings has a beer garden and all the great Catonsville Restaurants on Frederick Road are open for business. One of my favorite local bands is the Kelly Bell Band, sadly not on the schedule this year, but last year they did a fine job of entertain...

Wednesday June 1st- I took the day off! After the 31 day challenge of May marathon I am sure there were a lot of people who did not post for the day.I was busy elsewhere!Yesterday my little baby graduated from Pre-K. Doesn't time fly!We had a WONDERFUL ceremony at M.D.O.W Pre-K program in Oella to end the year. It was complete with a procession to the stage with all the children sporting mortarboards that had been hand made. All the children sang us some of the songs they had learned in music class this year with Miss Kathleen and also performed the ENTIRE alphabet in sign language.  They all received a diploma of completion and walked across the stage to accept it. With a class of 14 boys and 4 girls it was an interesting year. They were all so well behaved today. Miss Sheila in the Oce...

On Saturday I read a local online article about many of the area boy scouts, cub scouts, brownies and girl scouts troops participating in the 28th Anniversary "We Remember" Memorial Flag Ceremony at the Baltimore National Cemetery on Frederick Road.In honor of Memorial Day, this annual event gathers approximately 1,500 young volunteers on the Friday evening before the weekend begins. They respectfully place an American Flag on every one of the 45,000+ grave sites in the 72-acre cemetery. The Baltimore National Cemetery was formally dedicated 70 years ago on Memorial Day, Monday May 30th 1941As an area resident I was aware of a cemetery, a few years ago I sold a home directly across the road, but I never had a reason to visit and appreciate the enormity of the grounds. After reading this...

Catonsville, deemed "Music City" in 2002, has a lot to offer with great schools, location, amenities, restaurants, parks and community spirit, but one of the joys of the summer months for local residents is the musical concerts performed at the Lurman Woodland Theatre. Located on Bloomsbury Avenue beside the Catonsville High School, it is tucked away behind a band of thick oak trees. It is an outside amphitheater with a long history in the community. There are no seats, but there is plenty of grass and pleasant shade to enjoy a very wide range of local music all summer long ; Big band, Jazz, Bluegrass, cover bands etc. All of the performances are free, but donations are very much appreciated. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic and enjoy the evening. There is even a place for childr...

Christ Lutheran Nursery School-Pre-schools in Catonsville, MD I am a working mom.  When Sydney was born, I was working as a mortgage loan processor at my sister's company. I was blessed to be able to bring my daughter to work with me since she was only 8 weeks old.  When Sydney started to crawl, I began working with my brother, eventually becoming a loan officer. As a mother of "advanced maternal age", it was very important to me to spend as much time with my daughter as I could.  I loved my job, I was good at it. I had a great support at home and at the office that allowed me to do both.  Sydney had not been away from me her whole life, unless she was with family.  Sending my daughter to pre-school was a huge decision for my husband and I.  Sydney and I spent lots of time reading, play...

Catonsville residents, myself included, are delighted that the CATONSVILLE SUNDAY FARMERS MARKET is about to begin again for the season. Sunday May 15th marks the opening day. The "Original" Catonsville Farmers Market is on Wednesdays at the Bloomsbury Community Center, but a morning during the middle of the week is less convenient for me. A Sunday morning stroll that ends at the Sunday Market is a perfect weekend activity.  Located at 730 Frederick Road, the parking lot behind Friendly's Restaurant, the activities begin at 10am till 1:30pm. Rain or shine (looks like tomorrow may not be a perfect sunny day) Fresh locally grown produce, meat, eggs and baked goods are even more tempting when being serenaded by local musicians. Current Vendors  Andy's Produce Bakers Park Baltimore Waffle ...
