You can't get business from Facebook! I see some "business professionals" that write every post on their regular facebook feed as a commercial.  If you ask me, that is NOT the best way to get business.  It makes me want to block those folks like Farmville or Build your restaurant or those other annoying apps. Several months ago I was referred to a wonderful client (Ms. W) by another fabulous friend/client.  Ms. W. tagged me in a post raving about her refi in what seemed like minutes after I left the closing.  I got a call the next day from one of her friends.   This is the message I was tagged in today on Facebook...talk about a raving fan!  I have blocked out the pictures and names to protect their privacy.  The original referer jumped on the bandwagon on this post too! I have already ...

A snow day in Catonsville in March? Weird - plus it turned out to mostly be a rain day...  So I took the time to think about nicer weather to come and pick some summer camps! The times of kids playing their way through lazy summer days are gone! Working parents need places for our children to go during the day so it's great that there are tons of camp options around here.  See some of our favorite options below in Howard and Baltimore County: Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) - Their Summer Learning Adventure Camps have been running for 40 years so parents can send their kids to some of the same camps they attended - cool!  Camp locations are at the community colleges of Catonsville, Dundalk, Essex and Owings Mills.  Full and half day camp opportunities mainly for kids over 7 ...

"Bill's" is music to Catonsville's ears.Catonsville is sometimes called "Music City" and one of the reasons is the Bill's Music store on Frederick Road in the heart of Catonsville. The Frederick Road Fridays outdoor summer concert series takes place just down the street from the store and it couldn't be more appropriate! (They sponsor this event through the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce)This store is an institution - Bill Higgins started it in 1965 by giving guitar lessons in a room the size of a closet. He and his family still own and operate the store but guitars are clearly his main love. You see it when you enter the store - acoustic guitars take up the a big part of the right side - the electric and bass guitar section runs through the middle. Every guitar you see is more ...

THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING! You have probably heard that the east coast is bracing for a huge storm.  While the midwest has been hit hard this year, and many of our neighbors to the north have had more than their fair share of snow, most of Maryland has missed out on significant snowfall so far this season.  The forecast is calling for anything from slush to 18 inches.   If you ask me, that is a PRETTY WIDE RANGE!  How can we be expecting 18 inches of snow when I didn't even wear a jacket when I was out of the office today?  The temps were in their mid 50's!  Most kids and teachers are expecting to be out of school and many offices are already announcing snow emergency plans in effect.   I even got an automated call from Baltimore Gas and Electric to be aware that heavy snow...

I have heard about Aldi's stores for years from thrifty friends but haven't had the chance to shop at one until now.  The discount grocery recently opened a store in Catonsville off Baltimore National Pike near the Babies R Us.  This small scale grocery chain has about 1,000 stores spread out among 31 states and the concept is growing! Aldi's has several ways they keep prices down but the main way is that they have their own food brand.  Ninety five percent of their products are their own brand with a scattering of name brand items mixed in, usually on specials that end when they are sold out.  They buy from US farmers and local farms as often as possible and carry organic as well. The stores are much smaller than a Giant or Safeway store. The Catonsville store just has 6 aisles which in...

Catonsville High School Spring Musical 2013 - It's Not Too Late!   March 1st and 2nd   7 PM Catonsville High School If you are looking for something fun and local to do on Saturday, March 2nd,2013,  look no further.  The Catonsville High School production of Guys and Dolls is a great place to take a date or take the kids.   I remember my days in high school theatre fondly, I am sure that these kids will look back on this production with pride! What a fun show...gangsters and gambling, romance and come to Jesus, showgirls and LOTs of song and dance.  What is not to love? I was very impressed by how talented these kids are and I am sure you will be too!  Directed by Lauren Deutschman, the huge cast did a fabulous job of transporting the audience back to 1920's underworld of New York Ci...

The great big search for balance! At the start of my Real Estate career I attended a Brian Buffini "Turning Point Retreat" . An "Aha" moment was the need to have true balance in life to be successful. It's a constant battle with a busy life. A recent article about a new book,"Secrets to a Happy Family"  in Parade Magazine caught my eye so I flipped to the multiple choice quiz to see what his research on happy families had found.   Best selling author (& Dad of twin girls) Bruce Feiler makes the case that there are ways we can all make our homes, kids and families better adjusted and happier!  The 19 queries (see link above) weren't the standard cookie cutter questions and answers - but thoughtful and sometimes unexpected findings such as:    1.    What do surveys show that children want...

Catonsville, MD  Home Residential Resale Statistics - January 2013 Unfortunately, Catonsville's first foray into 2013 did not begin with a bang. Total sales volume decreased from January 2012's $5.9 million to $4.8 million this month, an almost 18% decrease. Though the number of units sold remained the same at 22, the average selling price dipped from $268 thousand to $220 thousand. In addition, homes stayed on the market 13 days longer on average, increasing from 84 to 97. However, this is largely due to three homes taking over 180 days to sell, with one remaining on the market for over two years. Though this wasn't Catonsville's greatest month, it still wasn't too bad, and we can expect activity to pick up as winter begins to rear its head. Catonsville, MD   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

The Benjamin Banneker Park and Museum in Maryland almost didn't happen. The largest original African American historical site in the country sat undiscovered  - until an archaeological dig uncovered it in 1985.  The museum was opened to the public in 1998 and is run by the local parks and recreation. So I have now had my Real Estate license for 7 years.  Yes, I got into this business at the wrong time I know but after spending years in the pharmaceutical industry I wanted a career that allowed me more flexibility with my schedule so that I had more time with my kids.  Well I have A LOT of time now!  I have never been so frustrated in my life as I am now.  I have always thought of myself as a go-getter.  I am definitely driven and never take short cuts.  I like to work and actually thrive off of it......so why can't I seem to get going in this industry? I started off on a team with a team leader who for the most part, gets clients by being a social butterfly.  That's great and it works but I have 3 kids ages 2-10, so being out is not an option.  I coach local lacrosse and field hocke...

Snow Boarding in Baltimore? My new favorite place - Liberty Mountain Resort and Conference Center in PA.Apart from a few random hills, there is no ski resort in Baltimore. Until recently I believed Wisp Resort in Deep Creek to be the closest slopes. (3+ hours from the Metro Baltimore area) Shows what I know! This past Monday in January, Public Schools in Catonsville had a professional day. Despite the freezing rain we bundled up and headed North West to Liberty Mountain Resort and Conference Center. It was a mere hour and 20 minutes and we arrived at the foot of the mountain in Carroll Valley just after 9am. They offer lessons for all skill grades and ages. My little six year old novice snowboarder took a 2 hour lesson and then had 2 hours to carve up the slopes. Here is a short video of...

The wonderful Mothers Day Out of Westchester is accepting new families for the 2013 Summer and Fall Sessions.  My son really loved his years in preschool at MDOW and the school just keeps getting better!  The director and her staff have added after care which allow more families to get their kids into a program here.Families from all over Catonsville and Columbia bring their toddlers who then "grow up" into the excellent pre school program which gets them ready for kindergarten.  Affordable?  Yep - at $15 for each 3 hour session it makes quality care an easy choice.  The school is offering an open house on Sunday, January 27th so parents can tour the facility, meet the teachers and learn about the available programs. New families can register starting February 8th and spaces will fill...

Vote for Lauren - The power of FacebookThis is Lauren Alberg, She is in 8th grade at Catonsville Middle School. She has submitted this video to Facebook to enter a "Voices" a local Baltimore singing contest by that is being judged by the amount of "Likes" that she gets. Here is the link on Facebook to vote for Lauren.   Lauren is the 13 year old daughter of my client (and  now my son's music teacher). I had no idea she was so talented until we recently attended the Catonsville Middle School presentation of "Little Mermaid". Lauren was the lead role and enthralled the audience throughout.  My six year old and his 2 little friends sat mesmerized for the entire time. In my three years of Drama School many moons ago I think we were hard pressed to put on such a great production!MEIR PANIM, ...

Catonsville, MD  Home Residential Resale Statistics - December 2012 Sales in Catonsville, MD, saw a 9% increase from December 2011 to 2012, rising from $7.9 million to $8.6 million. Compared to last month, the increase was even greater, as November 2012 saw total sales volume of $6.8 million, a $1.8 million difference. Though homes stayed on the market longer than last year (94 days vs. 82) and also, on average, sold for a lower price ($245,000 compared to $254,000), four mores homes were sold, 35 compared to 31 (and 7 more compared to last month's 28). While many cities experienced drops in sales, Catonsville was one of the few bright spots during 2012's last month. That is why I donated 24 Android Tablets to the Technology Department at Hillcrest Elementary School in Catonsville!Do you love what you do? As a Full Time Realtor in Central Maryland I could not imagine doing anything else. I love everything about Real Estate. I also love being a Mum to my 6 year old son. Between a full time career Real Estate agent and a parent, I don't seem to have much more time to do anything else. At the end of the day I am exhausted. How do other parents do it?I am completely in awe of fellow parents who do seem to do it all and with ease. A good friend of mine has 6 children under 10 and she is currently enrolled in school too.  Her Facebook page is a constant stream of Lacrosse, Soccer and Field Hockey. She also participates on the Hillcrest Elementary School PT...

It's winter Restaurant Week in Baltimore County!  Starting January 11th through January 27th - over forty restaurants throughout the county are offering a chance to dine at sometimes extremely reduced prices!  Ruth's Chris in Pikesville and the Oregon Grille are some of the very high end restaurants participating this year.  Prices for dinner range from $20-$35 and most include a salad or soup, entree and dessert. The restaurants range from local sports bar/restaurants to fine dining and everything in between.  It's a great way for foodies of all budgets to sample local restaurants and boosts revenue for those places during an otherwise slow time of year.   Here in Catonsville, a popular special occasion restaurant, The Candelight Inn is participating.  This restaurant has been around s...

Home Residential Resale Statistics -- November2012 Catonsville, MD         Unfortunately for Catonsville, November 2012 was not the city's strongest showing with regards to the real estate market, as sales decreased almost 30%, going from $9.5 million in November 2011 to $6.8 milliom this month. This is largely attributed to a large decrease in homes being sold, with only 28 being sold this November compared to 41 homes in 2011. Though the average selling price inreased 5%, that was not enough to make up for the aforementioned 30% decrease. In addition, homes stayed on the market for 23 days longer on average, though 15 did sell witihn 60 days. Overall, though Catonsville did not experienced its strongest month, the lack of activity in November will hopefully bring about a strong end to...
