There is a new subdivision in the Maurice landscape called Village Estates. This new neighborhood is located in the city limits around the corner from the Maurice park and just a couple of blocks away from Maurice Elementary. DSLD is the developer and prices start in the $170,000s. Home sizes start around 1650 square feet up to about 2000 square feet and feature 3 and 4 bedrooms. There is a pond in the center with several homes having water frontage. A few homes are already under contract even though construction has just begun. There is no doubt in my mind that the whole subdivision will be sold in no time. If you would like more information about Village Estates, contact me today before it's too late! Maurice has been growing steadily for the past few years with several new subdivisio...

The new Maurice Branch of the Bank of Abbeville opened recently. It is on Maurice Avenue right across from the church. For a couple of days this past week, while they were tearing down the old building, the only thing standing was the vault.   Maurice has changed quite a bit since I moved here in 15 years ago. I love our little town and we have some of the best food around with Villager's Cafe serving the best poor-boys in Acadiana and Hebert's Specialty Meat famous for its stuffed deboned chickens and poultry. Thinking about moving to Maurice? Click on this link to view all the homes for sale in Maurice. The link is updated daily. Thinking about selling your home in Maurice? Let me know as I have many clients wanting to move here and waiting for the right property to come along. Origin...

We just listed this awesome property at 13509 Plantation Pl, just south of Abbeville near Mouton Cove (70510). This home has been totally redone after hurricane Rita from top to bottom, it has been elevated 2 feet above the minimum elevation, and it has top of the line hurricane shutters on all doors and windows. It is move-in ready and has so much to offer... The home, which would also make a great camp for people who hunt down south in Vermilion parish, features 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, large living, dinning area and great kitchen with lots of cabinets and built-in wine cooler.   The home sits on a corner lot (0.6 acre) and is surrounded by woods. From the porch or the patio, you cannot see any neighbors. And as a bonus, a hot tub next to the house (also elevated) where you can relax afte...

If you've been following my blog, you know I love this event! The Giant Omelette Celebration in Abbeville, LA is always lots of fun for the whole family and I try to make it with my daughter every year, at least the Sunday afternoon when they do the cooking.  This is the skillet in the middle of the street in downtown Abbeville last year. The weather was just perfect! When the Giant Omelette Celebration began, they used 5000 eggs. Since then, they've added one egg every year and this year, there will be 5027 eggs in the omelette along with some 52 pounds of butter, among other things! Yum! The procession of chefs is very nice with all the flags from the different areas where they are from. This is truly an international event. They also have this celebration is the following cities: Bes...

I love the spring; it is my favorite time of the year. This picture of the sunrise over our pond was taken last week, Easter morning. It really doesn't get much better than this. Over the years, as a Realtor, I've helped several of my clients find their own little piece of paradise like this. If you are looking for property with a pond or even river frontage, with or without a house, give me a call. I would love to help you find your own corner of heaven right here in Acadiana. This place was screaming for a picture. This is the Depot Gift Shop and Train Museum on Lafayette Street in Abbeville. There is so much going on in the little side yard. I really love the way the picture turned out after I spent a little bit of time playing with it. Most of this was achieved with an app called "Dynamic Light" for iPad and now available for Mac computers. I had lots of fun with this one! Originally Posted at: Lafayette Real Estate News

Yes, it is a real car up in the tree. This car has been there for as long as I can remember (15+years). My husband says that there used to be another car in that tree when he was a child. Why they keep putting cars in the tree, I'm not sure. To make people talk, perhaps? I was tempted to say "only in Louisiana" but I'm sure there are other cars in trees somewhere. If you want to see the car in the tree for yourself, it is on Hwy 82, just north of Abbeville. Originally Posted at: Lafayette Real Estate News

If you are looking for property in Vermilion parish to build a nice home, you need to consider Bayou Marron Subdivision just south of Abbeville and about 5 minutes from downtown. Located off of S. Henry, Bayou Marron is a small oasis filled with mature trees along Coulee Kinney and just a few feet away from the Vermilion River. One of the lots I just listed (above) has water frontage and is .65 acre. It is available for $30,000. The lot next to it is also available. It is .81 acre and listed for $14,000. These two lots are on Rue de Bayou, near the cul-de-sac. I also listed 3 lots on Avenue des Chenes, the other street in Bayou Marron. These lots are about 1/2 acre each and are available for $18,000. If you are a builder, the seller is willing to negotiate a great deal on all five lots....

There is still quite a bit of sugarcane burning going on in Vermilion parish these days. I'm thinking it's probably close to the end but every day this week, I've seen the dark smoke clouds in the skies around our home in Maurice. Some of you may wonder why farmers burn the sugarcane in the first place. According to LSU Ag Center, there are several reasons: lower cost of production and more efficient harvesting of the cane, it reduces the amount of cane being transported and thereby reduces the number of hauling trucks on public roads (less wear and tear of the roads), and it also increases the yield of sugar while improving the quality of the sugar. Farmers have been growing sugarcane for more than 200 years in Louisiana. The sugar industry is important here as more than 30,000 people ...

Home sales in Maurice, LA, rose sharply in 2011 mainly because of new construction in the area. Of the 65 homes that have sold so far this year, 35 were new homes. Last year, only 4 homes out of the 41 homes sold were new construction. There are currently 12 home sales pending, 4 of which are scheduled to close before the end of the year. That would bring the total number of sales to 69 for 2011. Nine of the 12 pending sales are also new construction (in Kirkland Estates). Two subdivisions mostly contributed to these numbers: Kirkland Estates, which is located off of Kirk Road east of Maurice, and Victoria Manor, located off of Beau Road on the south side of the village. Victoria Manor is now completely built up with no more lots or homes available while Kirkland Estates is near full as...

The Giant Omelette Celebration 2011 edition is this weekend in Abbeville, November 5th and 6th. This is a great family two-day event held in Magdaline square and downtown Abbeville. The cooking of the giant omelette is Sunday but there are activities on both days: live music, arts and crafts fair, antique tractor "Egg Cracking" competition (Saturday) and an antique car show (Sunday). For a full list of events, visit the Giant Omelette Celebration site. This is the skillet used to cook the 5000-egg omelette. Yes, 5000+! This picture is from 2009 as I wasn't able to attend last year's celebration. I will be there Sunday this year for the cooking (and eating) of the omelette. My daughter and I drove around this weekend searching for cemeteries and cool places to photograph. Yesterday, we went down to Bancker, Louisiana, to what used to be a thriving plantation community south of Abbeville. This is where we found the Grotto and a memorial park still in progress. Bancker was founded in the late 1800s by families of Acadian, Spanish, German, and Danish descent. The Grotto was built in 1935 by Father DeVos to honor our Lady of Lourdes. It stand a few yards away from the cemetery. The cemetery is for the most part in good to great condition. We saw people bringing flowers while we were there. These are probably some of the oldest graves there and a sign on the site dates the oldest one to 1897. This walkway through the woods is under construction and certainly mo...

Farmers have started to cut canes in our fields in and around Lafayette. If you are going to be on the roads, especially country roads, please use extra caution for the next few weeks. Sugarcane trucks tend to move slowly so be careful when passing them. It has been very dry here for the past few days so dust is flying and it may reduce visibility. Not to mention that once we do get some rain, the roads will be slippery. The sugarcane industry is good for our economy so be considerate of those who make it happen! Also, if you are traveling on Vermilion Parkway (Hwy 167) south of Maurice, they have started to resurface the road and one lane may be closed on each side. Traffic is still flowing well, just not as fast as usual. If you are looking for land to farm cane or other crops, give m...

I live in Maurice, LA so one thing I constantly pay attention to is our real estate market. In the past few months, there has been a tremendous amount of construction going on in and around Maurice and new homes sales are up. New home being built in Victoria Manor, Maurice, LA Victoria Manor is the subdivision that is the closest to the village of Maurice, located off of Beau Rd between W. Etienne and Hwy 699. In the past 3 months alone, they have sold 8 homes and there are 14 currently under contract. There is one home still available in Victoria Manor: 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1593 square feet, for $146,700. On-going construction in Kirkland Estates, Maurice, LA On the other side of Maurice, off of Kirk Rd, you will find Kirkland Estates where DSLD is also building new homes (same builder...

I mean there literally is a safe on the street in Abbeville, LA. Well, not exactly on the street... it is on the sidewalk.   I'm not sure what the meaning of it is or if it is even being used but for some reason, I had never noticed it before. It sits on N. State St. in front of Comeaux Café, which is across the street from the Sheriff's department and the Abbeville Court House. I was there for a few minutes this week to pick up a plat at the Clerk of Court's office and I just happened to park right next to the safe. P.S. The plat I was picking up was for one of my listings that went under contract in 9 days. If you are thinking about selling your home, contact me today! I notice the sign, "Le Musée à Maurice," a few days ago while going to the post office. I was very happy to see that the old Villien Bros building will be brought back to life. This building used to be on Church Street behind the Villien store which had been the Maurice Flea Market for many years. The large store was torn down but this one here was moved onto Chief H. Fred Ave, across the street from the cemetery. I haven't seen any activity around the building yet, but this morning, I was looking at the events schedule for the Grand Réveil Acadien, which starts today in the New Orleans area, and saw that they will have beignets and coffee next Friday morning here at the Musée including a beignets making demonstration. It starts at 8am October 14th. Hope to see some of you there. I know...
