Historical Khoury House Move I recently blogged about a Historical House being moved to a new location in Lake Charles.  Patricia Kennedy commented and was so intrigued she thought the house would be dropped!  Patricia also featured this blog as one of her favorites last week. Thanks Patricia! This historical house which belongs to the Khoury family of Lake Charles, has been in the Lake Charles news spotlight.  The local news station KPLC featured the house once again this evening.   It is now resting in its new location on Pujo Street right in the heart of the Charpentier District.  The house is secure and renovations are scheduled to be completed in nine months - one year.  Expect a follow up blog in the future when the home is completely restored! The Charpentier District is located ...

Compiling statistical data for Margaret Place is not an easy task, as there are several sales that did not go through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). For the purposes of this report, I am only using MLS data. There is currently only one home for sale, $449,900. There is one "Under Contract" which was listed for $150,000 and sold within days. In the last 12 months, (8/15/2009-8/15/2010), there have been 3 closed sales. An aerial view of Margaret Place along with the physical boundaries is available on a previous post.

Here, I answer the question, "Where is Margaret Place Historical District Located?" The map below is a rough outline of the city district which is comprised of three subdivisions, Margaret Place, Margaret Manor, and McCain Subdivision. Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive (formerly South Ryan), the Griffith Coulee, Shell Beach Drive, Park Avenue (both sides), and Ryan Street in front of the Immaculate Conception Catholic School are the major boundaries. The Margaret Place Historical District is ideally located near the Christus St. Patrick Hospital as well as the surrounding medical community. Drew Park, Lock Park, and the Civic Center Boardwalk are all within an easy walk. As you can see, Interstates 10 and 210 are easily accessible.   View Margaret Place Historical District in a larger map

"Is it possible to purchase homes on the water in Lake Charles?" "Please send me information about homes on the water in Lake Charles." Given that the Lake Charles area is blessed with numerous lakes and beautiful bayous, this type of question and/or request is typical for real estate agents in Lake Charles. The following is a statistical snapshot of active listings of homes currently available and on the water throughout the Lake Charles area, including Moss Bluff, Sulphur, Westlake, etc. Number of Active Listings: 59Average number of Bedrooms: 3 Average Square footage: 2763Average list price: $490,287Lowest list price:   $34,900Highest list price:  $2,350,000 While the number of active listings increased by one, the average square footage, average list price, lowest list price and hig...

Do your real estate needs include 4 bedroom homes for sale in South Lake Charles? The following is a snapshot of 4 bedroom homes in South Lake Charles * currently available in MLS areas 30 and 40. Number of Active Listings:  68Average Square footage:  3290Average list price:  $483,388Lowest list price:    $99,900Highest list price:  $3,500,000 This reflects a reduction by 3 homes in the number of active listings from my last report.  The average list price for 4 bedroom homes for sale in South Lake Charles went down slightly from $488,990 to $483,388. Once again, the $3,500,000 listing "skews" the statistics. Today was a magical day in my household.  Like most homeowners, we had a project that was a little over our head... so who you gonna call for help with mounting a flat screen?  The BEST BUY  Geek Squad  in Lake Charles of course! Just like the TV commercial the Geek Squad van appeared! Our "Geek" "Mark" arrived at our door to mount our flat screen and media system. Of course we immediately became friends! He was very courteous and professional. Our TV was too large for a corner mount, as I had originally imagined. Instead we chose a mount that can swing away from the wall. This gives us the option of watching TV in a sitting area in the master bedroom. No more tangled wires and boxes sitting on a table, everything is neatly mounted, its great!  This is the finished result.   I highly re...

MaryAnn's Cafe is a true institution and is a classic example of another great restaurant in Downtown Lake Charles. When I discovered that a friend shared my appreciation for MaryAnn's, I quickly seized the opportunity to ask my friend, a far superior writer, to provide me with insights about MaryAnn's Cafe. When you have a place as great as MaryAnn's, you want to spread the word as effectively as possible. The following is what "Okrafeet" has to say about Mary Ann's Cafe. Former Atlanta residents, Tony and Julie DiGiovannni were visiting the Lake Area during the Christmas of 1996. Julie wanted to get a bite to eat before they hit the highway home, so they stopped at MaryAnn's Cafe. "It was like taking a step back in time.We had a great lunch and before I was back from washing my hands,...

Historic House is Moving to A New Location   I recently posted a blog entitled Everything Old is New Again where I highlighted Rhino Rhenovators and the talents of Randy LeJeune.  I also made mention that they would be moving a historical home currently located on Shell Beach Drive in the near future.  That move will take place tomorrow morning. The house move is an interesting process where the home is moved in half (the roof section removed first) then the lower section loaded on a trailer and moved to a new location.  This home will be moved to a lot in the historical area of Pujo Street here in Lake Charles.  I wanted to be on hand with my Flip Camera to capture this progress as the house is jacked up until it gets moved early tomorrow morning.  However, Wednesday is sales meeting d...

According to this Bloomberg Businessweek article, the answer would be.........LAKE CHARLES. That is right, Lake Charles is projected to be the strongest housing market in Louisiana by 2014! Further, the same report projects a 6% increase in home prices over the next four years." The articles also anticipates "a low point in prices reached in the third quarter of 2011. Buyers! Knowing the interest rates will more likely go up than down significantly, and that prices may well go up, what does that suggest?  Obviously, this is a great time to build or buy a home in the Lake Charles area.

This new home with acreage in South Lake Charles features magnificent new construction that is nearing completion.   The beautiful home features 6 bedrooms, 3 baths and 3919 square feet of living area.  These are large bedrooms with the grand master suite including an impressive walk-in closet and jetted tub with separate shower.  As you would expect, the kitchen is large and is outfitted with lots of cabinets and a walk-in pantry. It  can be difficult to find a new home with acreage! This one has the acreage plus features galore, including a floor plan that offers a downstairs bedroom which could be used as an office.  How many acres? 20+ acres of land! But that's not all! There is a stocked fishing pond and a 30 x 50 shop with large bay doors. Directions:  South on Gulf Highway, west...

There are numerous offerings on YouTube for "The Lake Charles Two Step." Fiddlers might find this lesson of special interest and Chris Miller fans will enjoy watching his accordian at work. But for the dance enthusiast, I thought this toe-tapping version might be of interest.   And who can resist the Acadien Cajun Band? The video quality is not grand, but there is no doubt that the Berkley California crowd is having a good time!

Arts & Crabs Event Held in Lake Charles, Louisiana   The Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana provides the Calcasieu area with many cultural events throughout the year in and around Lake Charles.  Each event is always about bringing something to the area that will enrich the community and bring local arts and culture to the attention of the public.  Today was the first annual Arts & Crabs Experience held at Prien Lake Park.  This event was held to spotlight our local seafood industry and promote area artists in a family friendly setting.  Seven area restaurants created crab dishes and each table also featured a complimentary specialty Abita beer. I captured some of the sights of the event in the slideshow below. Wherever there if food and music fun is not far behind.  Chec...

It had been my intent to someday blog about the wonderful medical community in and around Lake Charles. As situations have arisen, I've tossed out a few thoughts.  Never thought it would take getting a little sick to remind me of that goal. In yesterday's blog, I mentioned the "Path Lab". Specifically, I said that they have "their processes down." Well, today, I returned to the Pathology Laboratory for some additional blood work.  I registered at just past 3:00 and was done in less than 5 minutes.  For the second day in a row, as I'm leaving the registration desk, someone walked out to receive and escort me to the "drawing room" (my words, not theirs). From my perspective, the Pathology Lab has their act together in a variety of ways.  They appear to be staffed appropriately.  From the ...

Until now, the lot sizes on Barbe Street were 125 x 200.  In response to one of the most frequently asked questions as to the potential of purchasing smaller lots, the lot sizes and prices have been officially changed in MLS. Rather than 4 lots, the new scenario offers 5 lots at 100 x 175. Greater width and depth is negotiable. An easy and beautiful walk delivers you to the sidewalk along the ever popular Shell Beach Drive. The price, only $97,300.

If the mascot (is this the offical mascot?) for The Night Owls at Active Rain needs a break, this Margaret Place Owl might make a suitable backup, despite the fact that it scared the daylights out of me as I was walking from the house to my office.  I'm used to the squirrels leaping from limb-to-limb and tree-to-tree, but the sound this guy made as he flew to a perch for a bird's eye view of my back yard was a bit startling. He was less than 20' from me when I pulled out my phone to capture a few pictures. I whispered a request to "stay put" while I went to the office (less than 100' from my back yard) for the  video camera. Thankfully, this magnificent creature remained and was content to let me video/observe. In fact, the owl outlasted me insofar as the photo-shoot.  He only moved onc...

LUNA Bar and Grill is a Hot Spot in Downtown Lake Charles Locally owned and operated Luna Bar and Grill in Lake Charles, Louisiana  is one of many casual places to be seen in Lake Charles.  The comfortable yet eclectic atmosphere welcomes you to sit back and visit with friends over drinks.       Serving both lunch and dinner, Luna Bar and Grill offers many specials, among my favorites are the spinach and artichoke dip and the Luna Tuna. Luna offers inside and outdoor dining.  You will want to make your way outside at 9:00pm for the live entertainment.  Many local bands and talented musicians perform nightly on stage. One of my favorite performers and personal friends is Judd Bares shown here playing live at Luna Bar and Grill.  Click on the photo to hear a sample Judd's talent.   You wi...

As indicated on the Calcasieu Preservation Society's website dedicated to the 2009 11 most endangered things, places and structures in the Parish, the building that was home to Gold Band records is "not much to look at, but this is the place where musical history was made." The Preservation site indicates that the records and artifacts were salvaged. Sadly, the location where Dolly Parton recorded her first record is in a horrible state. Swamp pop, Cajun, Country Music, and R&B were recorded here in the 1950's and 1960s. Some of the other talents that got their start or recorded in this building on the corner of Church and Ryan included Boozoo Chavis, Phil Phillips, Rockin' Sidney and Freddy Fender. The Preservation Society notes that the building is "practically on the interstate right...

As much as I'm looking forward to ordering my own Reuben Sandwich at Booda's Bistro, I resolved to check out Chez Le Chien Chaud first. After all, gotta support these positive "happenings" in Downtown Lake Charles! Considered the first "legal" umbrella restaurant in Southwest Louisiana, Chez Le Chien Chaud offers hot dogs and more for a quick lunch. Heading South from Broad Street, it was easy to spot one of the latest attractions in Downtown Lake Charles.  The bright, multi-colored umbrella in front of the old and historic Calcasieu Marine Bank building could not be missed.  As I was waiting for my order, recently retired Policy Jury Administrator Mark McMurray approached.  In a separate blog, I'll discuss my admiration for Mark and the work he accomplished during his service to Calca...
