Why is my house taking so long to get SOLD? Ultimately, the reason a property sits on the market for 1 day or 1000 days is that an offer can't come in until a buyer is willing to pay that price for that house in that location in that condition. The house we are in now that we bought in 2006 was on the market for a long, long time. However, we were not looking at buying a house until September 2006 which was when we bought it. Most times a house simply has to wait for a buyer looking for that house to start looking at houses. I've heard that most home improvements don't pay off when you are selling your home and that you need to be careful about which ones to make so that you won't end up losing money. As a home buyer then, would it be better to buy a home with lots of improvements and take advantage of the seller's losses, or to buy a home that is not as updated (but less expensive) and to make the improvements yourself. I guess that as long as you are careful not to spend more than the actual improvements are worth, you will end up ahead.
