Well, here we are the cold is here again.  But before it starts to get really cold, I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of one last butterfly.  This Red Admiral was kind enough to stay perched on my dying marigolds while I ran inside to grab my camera.   I guess I can't complain too much about the weather.  At least we actually had fall this year instead of going straight from warm summer temperatures to freezing cold snow as it seems we do so often.  :)

Indianapolis Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Walk/Run December 10th, 2011 We are now officially 12 days away from the 23rd Annual Jingle Bell run here in Indy. The streets of downtown Indianapolis will be filled by the sounds of bells jingling on approximately 3,500 people registered to run/walk this years' event. Many people believe arthritis only affects those who are aging....Not so.  Take Sarah Hake, this year's Arthritis Honoree.  Sarah is just 26 years old, but was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the young age of two. There's still time to register for the race and raise some money to help this foundation out.  Fees are as follows: Race Fees Adults (13 years and older)$22 per person on or before October 31$25 per person November 1 - noon on December 7$30 per person on pack...

It’s no secret that buying or selling a home is one of life’s most stressful events. But I admit I was shocked recently to read that the stress of a real estate transaction can cause you to age a full TWO YEARS! Of the 2,000 participants questioned during a research study by In-Deed, those who were involved in a real estate transaction suffered from hair loss, short-term memory loss, lack of sex drive and general anxiety. And so I wonder: does the rate of premature aging double if you’re selling your current home and buying a new one? Because if that’s the case, buying and selling 3 houses during your lifetime adds more than a decade to your appearance and well being. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the joys of homeownership! Buying or selling a home will always be stressful – a...

When I was still new to Indianapolis I rented a cute apartment on Mass Ave but knew I'd buy a house eventually. I love owning my own house and there was no way I could be an apartment dweller for long. I had a special fondness for the Craftsman style of architecture. When a coworker asked if I knew about all the Craftsman Arts and Crafts homes for sale in Historic Irvington, I had to admit that I hadn't even heard of the place. Turns out, Historic Irvington is one of the better kept secrets among Indianapolis metropolitan neighborhoods. It's just five miles east of downtown Indianapolis --Michigan, Washington, and New York are the main thruways. There were plenty of great Craftsman Arts and Crafts homes for sale in Historic Irvington,  just a few minutes from the Mass ave neighborhood I...

Bring on January! Ordinarily I’m no fan of January (ditto for December, February or March), but an unveiling this week of plans for the 2012 Indianapolis Home Show Centerpiece Home has caused me to reconsider. The Craftsman style Centerpiece Home built by Fischer Homes is going to be stunning, and may actually be a reason to look forward to January!   For the Fischer Homes team and interior designer Joy Perkins, constructing the Centerpiece Home is all about creating a “buzz.”  And from what I saw that should be no problem. The eye-catching Craftsman exterior in a soft shade of “avocado” (nothing like the kitchen appliances of the ’60s) with antique white trim and a beautiful stone elevation positively beckons you inside, where the Once Upon a Time inspired custom details and design pro...

It's no secret that the neighborhoods around Geist Reservoir feature some of the most beautiful Indianapolis real estate around. One of my favorite Geist neighborhoods is Windjammer, an enclave of just 55 homes off of Fall Creek, east of 96th Street. The Windjammer neighborhood features custom homes built in the mid-to late 80s. The homes themselves are lovely and very well maintained, but what really sets Windjammer apart are the large, beautifully landscaped and heavily wooded lots. It gives the neighborhood a cozy feeling, even during the winter months. And you just know trick-or-treating would be a blast in Windjammer! Windjammer residents enjoy a small, intimate neighborhood, but also have great access to Geist neighborhoods, marina, restaurants and shops. A pedestrian path on th...

The chandelier in the Grand Ballroom of the Vinoy Renaissance resort in St. Petersburg, Florida was not only stunningly beautiful, it also reminded me of something I’d seen before - right here in Indianapolis. The centerpiece sculpture of the Indianapolis Museum for Children! Both pieces are by American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, and both are extraordinary! Circling the ramp around the glass tower in the Indianapolis Children's Museum and looking down at the intricate artwork (be sure to check out the floor underneath!) is worth the price of admission by itself. It will also will leave you wondering - how do they clean that thing? Want more information about living in the Indianapolis area? Find it here!

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being RIGHT! For instance, I've always thought that North Meridian Street, with its stunning Indianapolis historic homes, beautiful lots, and early 1900s charm, is one of the prettiest neighborhoods I've seen. And I'm right! (Not that anyone has ever argued this point with me.) Forbes magazine recently named North Meridian Street to its top 10 list of America's Prettiest Neighborhoods, where it joins some impressive addresses including Sonoma, California and Celebration, Florida. Glimpses of the grand homes, built mostly in the 1920s when North Meridian Street was considered the 'burbs, leaves onlookers wanting more. "You can't help but gaze at them and wonder what it would be like to live there," writes Midwest Living travel editor Kendra Willi...

I-465 Renamed to USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway Yesterday the sailors who died in a 1945 torpedo strike were honored here in Indianapolis by the renaming of Interstate 465 (I-465) to the USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway.  The ceremony was held at the USS Indianapolis War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis on Tuesday. July 30th, 1945...12:14 AM, a Japanese submarine fired a torpedo at the USS Indianapolis.  Hundreds of sailors were killed as a direct result of the torpedo blast while approx 900 others were forced to float in the shark infested waters (many without a lifeboat) until help could arrive.  After four days only 316 men were alive.  Unfortunately the others perished to shark attacks, exposure, and dehydration. This attack was the largest loss of life at one time across the ...

Originally posted at My IndyWaterfront Blog There are definitely signs of a real estate recovery happening in the Fishers, Carmel and Geist area.  The Fishers Real Estate market was up 40% over a year ago in July and the Carmel Real Estate market was up 14%. So let’s look at the Geist Real Estate market and specifically the number of homes sold in Geist that are on Reservoir. In the period January 1 - July 31st in 2010; there were 14 homes that sold (this excludes condos) that were on the Reservoir.  In 2011 for the same period there were again 14 homes that sold.  How is that a recovery you ask… The number of homes over $1MM that sold in 2010 was one…a single one.  In 2011 for the same period, there were five over $1MM.  That alone could be considered a recovery in Geist.  But add to ...

Indianapolis Franklin Township Schools Now Charging for Bus ServiceToday was the first day for Franklin Township Schools here in Indianapolis.  They are the first school district in Indianapolis to charge a fee for children to ride the bus.  The fee is $475.00 for the first child and $400.00 for each additional child.  The first day was not without out it’s issues.  Some schools had over HALF of their previous bus riders elect not to sign up for bus service this year meaning either more children were walking or hitching a ride to school. It’s understandable that there are services that must be cut but it seems each year more funding is cut for schools here in Indy which is unfortunate. Some schools report that the influx of cars into the school grounds actually decreased the amount of stu...

Less than three years after opening in 2008, the new Indianapolis International Airport was named by J.D. Power and Associates as a 2011 Customer Service Champion. It also earned recognition from Airports Council International as the Best Regional Airport in North America for Airport Service Quality. If you’ve never traveled to or through IND, you may be thinking to yourself, Indianapolis? Really? The answer to that bit of skepticism is, Indianapolis! Really! Whether you're a frequent flier lucky enough to be considering an Indianapolis relocation, or just the occasional passenger, you'll appreciate the spacious, modern terminal, ridiculously short and efficient security lines, and quiet, calm atmosphere. Design elements throughout the terminal are sure to capture your attention, too! ...
