When my son was small he was obsessed with trains. From the time he was a year and a half old until he was about six, trains were the love of his life. He watched Thomas the Tank Engine on TV, he read books about trains, and he accumulated an enormous collection of Thomas wooden trains and track and played with them by the hour. When there wasn’t a train around to play with, he made one. He would attach a line of  toy vehicles to the back of his tricycle and drive his train up and down the sidewalk. We would draw freight trains in chalk on the driveway. When we went out to eat he would create trains out of the sugar and jelly packets on our table. Read the rest of Model Railroad Garden

The Skokie Lagoons - a Glencoe Treasure!UPDATED 2022 Sometimes I cut off at Forestway Drive to drive along the beautiful Skokie Lagoons. I'm amazed how many cars take this route even though it's slower and curvier than the larger Hibbard Road one block east.At any time of day, in any weather, the lagoons are a beautiful sight.  They are owned and managed by the Cook County Forest Preserve District and total 190 acres with 7 connected lagoons. Recreational activities in summertime include fishing, boating (like canoeing as no motors are allowed,) birding, and biking.  Kayaks and canoes can be rented all summer long and lessons are also available. The site of the lagoons in Glencoe was originally a marsh that was drained in the early part of the century.  From 1933 to 1940 the Civilian Co...
