Aloha, Well the downturn in the economy has also affected our Hospitals on the Island of Hawaii.  Mayor Kim has said "Our hospital situation is in crisis." High operation cost combined with low reimbursements for patients and insurance companies have affect our bottom line.  What we are presently seeing is a cut in positions and a near complete hiring freeze. One CEO compared the situation "to a drowning man up to his nose in water".  The county is holding a number of working meetings to get the community involved in solutions to help solve the problem.  Not a good time for the sick in Hawaii. 10/25/2008

Aloha, One of the best kept secrets of Hawaii is our University of Hawaii Campus at Hilo.  This is a beautiful campus located in lovely Hilo town. This University is a state university with a private college atmosphere.  One of the benefits of this University is the small class room size and a low faculty-to-student ratio.  You are not going to have classes where there are 400students.  When my daughter attended, most of her classes had between 10 and 20 people in them. In addition, as a public university, the University of Hawaii has a great curriculum. Did I mention that the tuition rates are one of the least expensive in America. If you are thinking of a dream college for you children than it would be wise to take a look at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. 10/12/2008

Ho'olaulea is basically a Hawaiian Block party and it has taken over downtown Hilo one more time! Every year on the last Saturday of September downtown Hilo town is hoppin! 3 Concert stages set up right across from the beautiful Hilo Bay, the music starts PUMPIN and the people start JUMPIN!  The line up this year includes; Ten Feet, Mana o Company, Rebel Souljahz, Ekolu, Sudden Rush, Hookoa, Waiolama, Island Harmony, Darlene Ahuna, Mixjah, Tropical Blend and this doesn't include the strolling minstrels and the vendors! KWXX Island Music station puts on this event every year with a few appreciated sponsors and Hilo literally shuts down the streets for the party! It is a family event so no drugs or alcohol are welcome (inside or outside of the bodies present)  though the do show up in som... 09/27/2008

Yes Hilo does enjoy the lazy hazy days of summer time!  Our days get longer.  Our day time temps slip into the mid 80s and most of us hit the beaches of Hilo.  This year there is little rain so we have had some glorious bright sunny days.  Last Wednesday was such a day.   Here is a photo of Hilo with Mauna Kea in the back ground.  It taken in the small park on the ocean side of Suisan fish market with my Nikon D-50. As the Principal Broker of Local Hawaii Real Estate I receive calls from all over the world.  If I sound a bit sleepy when you call -- you just may have forgotten that Hawaii is in a different time zone! With a flick of the legislative pen in 2005, most of the localities in the USA made more day time available for more weeks!  They did this to make better use of the daylight by moving one hour of sun light from the morning to the evening.  So for the northern 49 states it begins at 2:00am on the Second Sunday of March and ends on the First Sunday of November.  And for the Europeans it begins at 1:00am GMT on the last Saturday of March and ends at 1:00am on the last Saturday of October.  For some reason, animals like roosters, pigs, cows, geckos and this blogging Broker (who needs his sl... 08/17/2008
