Have you ever seen a Maypole dance? Haiku Maui has one. We were lucky to be invited to a neighbor's Mayday celebration over the weekend, where they had their 10th annual Maypole dance on a beautiful sunny day in Haiku Maui. They had a huge pole of bamboo placed into a hole in the yard, with many colorful ribbons attached at the top. Each participant holds a ribbon as they dance around the pole in 2 directions, weaving in and out of each other. An array of hand drummers beat out the time during the process which took well over half an hour. As the ribbons weave together they get shorter and shorter and the dancers get closer together around the central pole, to the point where it's no longer possible to keep going. Haiku Maui Hawaii - Ho'olaule'a Flower Festival 2015 Photos It was a beautiful sunny day on Saturday for the annual event that brings out the whole Haiku community. It keeps getting bigger each year and it was nice to see many more restaurants participating with lots of food trucks. The variety of flowers and plants is amazing. A lot of things are put together by the kids at Haiku Elementary School which is just next door. I came for the food and to take pictures, and of course, talk story with old friends.  Filipino food - Pancit. Flower arrangements for sale for only $10. Pony rides for the kids, and a fun zone with bouncy castles too. Lots of beautiful tropical flowers everywhere you look. Local crafts for sale. Leis for sale. Haiku Maui annual Hoolaulea Flower Festival this weekend Once again it's time for the much awaited annual event at the Haiku Community Center that highlights all the wonderful flowers and plants that grow in Haiku Maui... The Haiku Ho'olaule'a & Flower Festival.  Orchids and tropicals, leis and bouquets, seedlings and landscape plants are all on display and offered for sale. More than just a flower show, this community event will also feature food booths, live music and dance, a silent auction, book sale, bake sale, crafts and more!  It's a benefit for the kids at Haiku Elementary School, which is right next door to this event on the Hana Highway. Happy Easter from Haiku Maui - painted goose eggs Back when we used to have a few geese I would collect the eggs and blow them out for painting. These are some of the results.  We no longer have geese, since having Jack Russell Terriers doesn't make it very easy to have free range poultry. A stinky mouse showed up at my showing today and the kitchen pantry smelled really ripe. The caretakers alerted me of it last night and by this morning there was no denying it!  There was a lot of smell, but no dead mouse or rat to be found. This is NOT what you want to happen when you're showing an expensive country property. We burned incense which helped a bit. I consulted with the buyer's agent and we decided to forge ahead as scheduled. The buyer is on island and his mission is to find a suitable property, the sooner the better. They showed up and there was lots to see before arriving in the kitchen. Lucky for us it was a beautiful day so all the windows and doors were open and the gentle trade winds were circulating the air. It would have been much worse if it was rainy and damp. ... 03/20/2015

Tie-dye pink hibiscus changes color throughout the day We love to grow colorful tropical flowers in Haiku Maui and this pink tie-dye variety is really unusual. As you know, hibiscus flowers bloom for one day and they stay fresh on or off the plant. In the morning this one is a bright solid pink, but by the end of the day it has faded to a stripey tie-dye effect. It's pretty and I haven't seen others like this, though my husband bought it at a local nursery. It's now got a permanent home in the garden where it can grow to be a big bush. Things just grow very well here in Haiku.  We also grow lots of: bananas, papayas, starfruit, avocados, citrus, veggies, herbs, and even cotton! Great food at Nuka in Haiku Maui Hawaii We had another great dinner the other night at Nuka in downtown Haiku Maui. It's a Japanese restaurant and sushi house, but they are always trying new things. This time we tried the Dynamite dish which consists of scallops and mushrooms and a yummy cheese sauce. It's not typical Japanese fare but it sure was good. Very rich and satisfying. Of course we also had some other good dishes.  A platter of sushi made with extremely fresh local fish. They really know how to prepare it and present it. The Asian Fries were another favorite, hot and salty and covered with sprinkles of furikake... you know, the dried seaweed and sesame seed mix.  The place was packed the whole time we were there so it was very lively and a bit noisy.  I totally recommend dinin... 01/31/2015

3 1/2 inches of rain over the weekend in Haiku Maui HI Well just when I was bragging about the great January weather we've been having here in Hawaii, we got slammed with a weather system that dumped 3.5 inches of rain on us on Saturday and Sunday. Not just in Haiku, but other areas of Maui too. It can stop anytime! On the other hand, we were needing some rain since it had been getting so dry and dusty, and the garden was needing watering daily. The catchment water tanks are filled up once again, and with the forecast they'll probably get flushed out as well in the next week.  Compared to what's happening on the mainland, I can't complain. At least all this water is great for the winter garden, as you can see from the salad greens and kale here. Between showers I was able to pick enough... 01/26/2015

Living off the land in Haiku Maui - wild pig for dinner Sometimes when we visit our cattle ranch on the north shore of Maui, we find some wild pigs running loose and tearing up the pastures. They are such a nuisance really, destroying the nice level ground and digging holes as they root for food. They are a problem all over the island as they spread a lot of invasive plant species wherever they go. So we don't feel bad when we "harvest" a few for the freezer.  There is no shortage of these pigs. You wouldn't think these small Jack Russell dogs would be much good for pig hunting, but I'll tell you there's nothing better! They don't chase after the really big ones, which is just fine by me. Harvesting some wild Haiku Maui honey for Christmas We were blessed to have some honey bees move into an old shed and build their hive here on our Haiku Maui farm. They have been very busy because there was a huge amount of honey combs inside when we took a quick peek.  Luckily a friend and neighbor who has his own hives suggested he could remove the queen bee and the colony to his nearby location.  He even offered to leave us with the honey since he already has plenty. So he came over with his buddy, got all suited up and prepared for the task. Maui Kombucha in Haiku Maui, Aloha Aina Center This little shop in the back of the building is still a hot spot for Maui kombucha fans. Drive around back where there's lots of parking. The Haiku Town Center is now called the Aloha Aina Center, and it's still located at the intersection of Haiku Road and the bottom of Kokomo Road in Haiku Maui. This converted pineapple cannery is home to a variety of local small businesses, including a lot of restaurants, a yoga studio and a fitness center. Rising Sun Solar is in the front corner. Sunflowers and Starfruits - the end of summer on Maui We had a very hot and dry summer here in Haiku Maui, and it continues, despite the fact that it's now officially autumn. Another bumper crop of sunflowers came and went, with much watering! The starfruits were late this year but managed to produce a good crop anyway, with little water from the sky, and no irrigation at all.
