Water water everywhere on Maui - but no water meters I met some nice people the other day and showed them around parts of Haiku Maui.  They are interested in owning a property where they can be more self sufficient.  Haiku is ideal for this, as there are properties already embracing alternative energies like solar and wind.  We have nice steady tradewinds blowing most every day of the year, and the sun shines a lot too.   Having their own source of water was something that really appealed to them, especially rainwater harvesting (that's the new term for catchment water).  We talked about the issue of fresh water on Maui and how it impacts development.  It's a long story, and I'm not going to go into it all here and now.   If you're curious about the water situation on Maui, here are a ... 11/08/2010

Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect it - from the garden! Take a look at these beautiful big tomatoes!  We don't usually get so lucky with growing big tomatoes and most of the time we are happy to have sweet cherry tomatoes from our Haiku Maui garden.  The last time we tilled up this patch of ground there were some volunteer tomato plants, and we said - let's give them a chance and see what happens. Fast forward to now.  Those 4 plants produced abundant cherry tomatoes and large tomatoes - from seeds that had been ploughed up into the soil, by way of reject fruits that fell.  This may be the best crop of tomatoes we've had.  Go figure!   Cherry tomatoes are sweet and juicy and you can use them in many ways, but it's hard to slice them into a sandwich or burger. Haiku Maui HI - Twin Falls Farm Stand - the movie! Not long ago I posted some pictures of this famous Maui north shore roadside attraction... now here's the 1 minute movie!   The Twin Falls Farm Stand is a popular spot on a sunny day, with so many cars pulled over by the side of the Hana Highway it can get dangerous.  People come for the waterfalls, which can be reached from the easy hiking trails.  They stay for the wonderful concoctions they whip up at the fruit stand, such as banana smoothies, and sugar cane juice.  Grab a cold drink and head up the trail for some tropical scenery and exercise. Where is Twin Falls on Maui?  If you drive the Hana Highway (Hwy 36), it's just past the 2 mile marker, which would be a couple of miles past the intersection with Kaupakalua Road (Hwy 360).  ... 09/12/2010

They say it rains every day in Haiku, but what do they know? You know they say it rains every day in Haiku Maui and that may or may not be true.  On the 2nd Thursday of each month the Maui Realtors get together to view the new listings for the north shore.  In all the years I have been doing he Realtor caravan in Paia and Haiku there have been very few Thursdays when it is raining.  Like maybe once a year. Today is one of those days with some sprinkles in Haiku, just a refreshing mist. But most of the time I can say the Realtor caravan for the north shore of Maui is sunny.  By midday the clouds were gone and it was another beautiful day in paradise, as usual.
