Papayas are a favorite tropical fruit around the world.We are blessed with a bounty of papayas this season, despite the wet winter.  It seems the rich soil from the previous veggie garden has made a big difference.  So I put together a short 1 minute video to show what the trees look like and how to pick the fruits, since many people have no idea where papayas come from.It takes about a year to year and a half from planting to picking.  To really be on top of things you'd be starting more seeds every year or two to replace the old trees as they get too tall and awkward to pick... a fruit picker pole can only reach so far.  I try to remember this fact but of course when you have buckets of papayas it's easy to forget!So now we enjoy the fresh fruit every day with our breakfast, and have ... 02/27/2019

Grateful for a Thanksgiving dinner from farm to table The weather this week in Haiku Maui is wet and windy so it's going to be nice to be stuck indoors on Thanksgiving day and do some cooking.  With these short and wet days, the veggie gardens tend to get neglected, but still produce plenty of things to eat... carrots, kale, beans, beets, okra, eggplant, herbs.  New beds will wait until spring, and the weeds get a chance to spread out. It's a good time to enjoy the fruits of our labors.What's on the menu?  This year it's not the traditional turkey and stuffing like most people are having, but food that we have grown ourselves on our own land... a big old roast beef from one of our own steers that we raised - grass fed.  Tender young sweet potatoes from the garden, the new ones from the ... 11/21/2018

We love to garden and grow food, which is very easy to do in Haiku Maui.  It's nice to have friends who share this passion, and bring us new plants to try.  Over the years we have incorporated a lot of great herbs into our gardens.From right to left: chili peppers; oregano; turmeric; my chickens!Mike brought us Hawaiian chili peppers which are probably some of the hottest peppers you can find.  They are very small and grow all year round on the bush, so there's always an abundance of these fiery little gems ready for picking.  How much do you really need anyway?   I use them in green papaya salad mostly, and they're also great for making chili pepper water which is simply crushed up peppers in some salt and water... instant hot sauce.Lance brought us a small cutting of oregano many year... 11/13/2018

If you live in Haiku Maui, you've noticed the construction of new sidewalks this summer, and now into fall.  It's been slowing down traffic on Pauwela Road, just above the Haiku Elementary School and up to the intersection with Haiku Road.  Brand new sidewalks are going in, making it easier to walk to school if you live in town.  With all the new lots being sold at Haiku Town Center, and also at Kauhikoa Farms, more families will be building homes and living near the school and walking to school.  This upgrade has been a long time coming, since the old existing walkways were in very poor shape.Once the work is done we also hope they repave Pauwela Road, as it's also in dire need of an upgrade.  School is already in for the fall 2108 semester, so let's hope it won't be too long before th... 10/03/2018

Two hurricanes have come and gone here on Maui and we have been very lucky to have no damages at our home.  In each case they downgraded to a Tropical Storm, which is less severe than a hurricane but still comes with some extreme weather.Plywood on the windows, ready for strong winds in Haiku MauiWhen you live off the grid like us, you're kind of prepared at all times: - not connected to the public power or water so no worries about outages - good supply of food on hand since it's a long haul to town on any day - more food available such as coconuts and bananas, garden crops - good supply of water with 3 water catchment tanks always at full capacity - stacks of plywood ready to be nailed up, and easily stored away afterward - spare gas cans filled up and ready if needed for the generato... 09/14/2018

Survive a tropical storm or hurricane with an off-grid home on Maui - and come out smiling.Disclaimer - it's not about building materials, but more about lifestyle.During this past Hurricane Lane event that happened in Hawaii in August, it was a good feeling knowing we were completely prepared in so many ways.  Strong winds knocked down trees, which knocked down power lines, causing loss of electricity for thousands of homes. My cute chicken house in Haiku Maui - happy chickens!My laying chickens are now happily housed in their own little chicken coop at the end of our yard where we can keep an eye on them.You might remember these hens when they were in their "chicken tractor" which was a pretty good setup until they got full size.  It was a bit crowded for all 8 of them at the time.  One hen didn't make it, just up and died overnight and then there were 7.  Still a bit crowded so my wonderful husband built them this small but functional little house... all from reclaimed and recycled materials.  Isn't it cute!Now they are relocated and have a permanent yard instead of a fresh patch of grass every day, so it looks pretty crappy.  The love to scratch and dig in the ground and the grass can't take too much of ... 08/12/2018
